THE EVENING NEWS OcfWjl, P. Fimm, it awl New Mtrchauls' Kschange, la our only acent In San Francisco, Vor Kaatern Ma. represented byS. M. Pettinuiil Jt of New York awl Boston.

I'stON SPKAKING fiAST Hotl. A. A. Sargent and Hon. Newton Booth addressed a crowded, lively and enthusiastic t'uion meeting nt Opera House last evening.

Mr. Booth is tin easy, fluent and pleasing speaker, especially endowed with the happy faculty of. attracting, entertainiog aud holding an audience as long as he is speaking. He drew a strongly coutrastive parallel between the action of the Republican and Democratic parties during the war of the rebelliou, and iu like manner reflected severely upon the difference in the relative positions of the present Presidential candidates at that time. He was very much applauded throughout, his address being one hour in duration.

Mr. Sargent followed in a very excellent, argumentative, instructive and thoroughly Union national speech of two hours in length. The Grant Club was in attendance, and appeared on the stage in several of their best campaign songs, closing with the "Star Spangled Banner," in which the entire audience joined iu the chorus. The meeting adjourned with three cheers for and Colfax, three more for Sargent and Booth, and three more for America generally. One rarely sees a more enthusiastically loyal assemblage than that at the Opera House last evening.

There will be the grandest time at Silver City this eveuiug. Every Union man should be there without fail. First telegraph informs us that a feature of the grand tnreiiUirht nrocession of next Tuesday night at Sun Frauciso will be a company of young mou who at the coming election will be entitled to cast their and that first vote will be for Graut and Colfax. It will be the glory of their after life, a glory that will descend to their posterity, that their first vote will not be thrown away upon Seymour aud Blair, but contributed to the election of the great triumphant chieftain and the country's most talented statesman, and at a period in our national history when those and none others were the very men demanded by the exigencies of the time to take command, and occupy the chief seats of the nation. Young men of Gold Hill, young men of Nevada, bear this one graud idea well in mind, and it you, too, are entitled to cast yeur fist vote at this election, by all means let it bo for Grant and Colfax.

I'nion Demonstration at Silver City To-nhiht Once C. Zabriskie and Hon. Newton Bftoth, both speakers of the highest order of merit, will address a grand Union Republican mass meeting at Silver City to-night. The faithful of that locality will bo out in force, and will be joined by their Union brethren of Gold Hill, and strong delegations from Virginia, Dayton, Washoe, Carson and the adjacent country, every good true level-headed man who dwells in this land of sagebrush uuil silver bricks being invited to come. The famous Grant Glee Club of Yirgiuia will lend additioual inspiration to the occasion with some of their choicest campaign songs.

Martial music, bonfires, and cannon will be made use of, and the glorious old flag of liberty and America will wave over a truly loyal assemblage. Freedom triumphs, and the nation progresses. "Grant's what's the matter." Tub Great Rartiivhake Shook Plainly i. this side or tue reception of the terrible and exciting news of the great Call, fornia earthquake this morning, created general consternation at Virginia nnd Hill, and the wildest, most exaggerated and contradictory reports spread like wildfire in all directions. The telegraph dices were crowded with individuals eager to hear the latest intelligence from the scenes of the earthquake, where so many had relatives, friends and property.

The shock was plainly felt by many at Virginia, and was also noticed at Gold Hill. gentleman from Carson informs us that the shock was generally ten mai piace, it shaking the window!) and and making crockery, rattle in the cupboards. Juvksilk Aualuam Best, of lower Gold Hill, informs us tlint within the Inst day or two lie hits detected several smnll boys who, watching their opportunity, bave been nipping amalgam about the Rhode Island and Sunderland mills. They got it in some of the outside spoilt apparatus, in very small but one boy bad collected live or six dollars worth. These little rogues evidently knew they were doing wrong, yet, of course, did not know the enormity of the offense.

It is rather of a bad way of schooling boys so young, and if their parents do not look after them a little better, they may have occasion to grievo over their becoming State Prison convicts when they shall have arrived at mature age. (tOnBLKi) AT thieves and other petty stealers may run for a long time without detection and arrest, but the police get track of them sooner or later. Bob Lowery was up before the Virginia City Recorder this morning. He has made his appearance before that high police judicial functionary several times since he returned from his springchicken raid among the farms of the Treckee. The Judge begius to know him like a hook, and although he has let him off gently heretofore, he will put Bob directly somewhere he can always keep an eye on him.
