--Speculations as to His Successor WasunioToN May name was added to the growing list of United States Senatora who have died suddenly within the past fewyears by the death this moruing Of Seuator John Bar-hour of Virginia Who passed away quietly at hia residence in this city The warning of approaching death came only ten minutes beforehand and its real character was probably never known to the victim About 6 o'clock this morning Miss Dangeriield Senator Barbour's sister-in-law was awakeued by knock- log on her bedroom door and found the Senator there He said he had au oppressive feeling in his chest and thought he was about to have an attack of the croup At his request Miss Dangerfield sent a servant for a doctor and then followed the Senator into his room across the hallway Capt Shepard of Warrenton Va an intimate personal and political friend of Senator Barbour and Mr Thompson the secretary and nephew of the Senator were also at the house They were awakened and went to the Senator's bedside but found him unconscious Within fifteen minutes after Miss Dangerfield had been awakened Senator Barbour was dead When the doctor arrived he pronounced heart failure the cause of the death The death of Senator Barbour wus entirely unexpected Although 72 years of age he was still hearty in appearance and other than a slight stool) in the shoulders and an appearance of fading eye-sight he gave no intimation of advanced years The only recent premonitory symptom of illness came to Senator Barbour last week Ile had been to the races at Benniugs and after reaching home complained of feeling slightly hoarse The hoarseness soon passed away leaving Senator Barbour in the belief that he had merely had tke symptoms of a cold In 1886 however when Senator Barbour was in Europe he had a slight attack of what is believed to have beeti paralysis All yesterday Senator Barbour had been bright and cheerful hi the morning he attended a meeting of the Senate committeee on the District of Columbia and seemed in very good spirits One of his fellow-committeemen says this morning that Senator Barbour looked particularly Well There was a bright color in his face and he seemed cheery and active Last night Senator Barbour showed no signs of a serious condition He went to his residence direct from the capitol a short distance away and in the evening entertained the wife of Justice Field of the Supreme Court who came to pay a social call and at the conclusion of her visit escorted her to her carrlage Ile then wrote three letters and chatted with Captain Shepard about the Democratic convention at Richmond next week and expressed his intentiou or being present About 11 o'clock he retired apparently in his usual good health Senator Barbour had no children his assiduously sought to make the outside world believe that all the Alliancemen are extremists There will be a number of contests of delegates from the committee on credentials it now appears The Democrats are showing a bold front as they ought to do It is a time to test a man's mettle The Republicans at their convention in the first district adopted resolutions expressive of their sympathy with the Alliance in the political light Though these resolutions were unanimously adopted the Iterblicans now seek to make it appear that they were afterwards withdrawn It is alleged tat there was a conference at Wilmington between Third party strikers and Republican leaders last Thursday evening What does this mean? Is this a "combine?" Your correspondent was told of the speech made in Swift Creek township the other (lay by Otho Wilson and of his anarchist address The Democrats had another primary there appointed straightout
