liver At retirement the jurist remarked "My earnest wish is that the public shall remember me as one who tried to be firm fair and impartial yet kindly disposed with it all" He noted his good health at age 72 and said he looked forward to travel with his wife Wingate There would be more time too he added for Rotary First Methodist Church and his beloved Coral Gables By combining business with pleasure he did travel In the first few years the judge spent about 25 per cent of his time holding court in the Carolinas and was visiting Miami at the time Impressed he told the late President Roosevelt about the observation and the day became a national event by presidential c-lamation in 1937 Surviving Judge Holland besides his wife is a stepson John Walker of Coral Gables Services will be held at 4 pm Monday in Philbrick and Son Coral Gables Funeral Home The Rev David Scoatcs minister of First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables will officiate Pallbearers will be George Simpson Harry Meyers Earl Curry Sam McCormick McCreedy Herbert Sawyer William Merriam and Frank Edwards Mrs Irene Bullock King Webster whose daughter is the wifee of Rep Claude Pepper of Miami died Friday at the Homestead Manor Homestead She was 87 Mrs Webster a St Petersburg resident entered the home Sept 15 Two other children Mrs Thomas Lansing Snyder and Myllion Bascom Webster are also Miami residents Her hus-band the late Thomas Pleasant Webster was associated with the Florida Citrus Exchange in Winter Haven An Alabama native Mrs Webster and her family lived in Opp and Ashford before moving to Florida Also surviving are a third daughter Mrs Ben Fuller of Attleboro Mass another son Clyde lomax Webster of St Petersburg and Arlington Va two sisters Mrs William Naftcl of Naftel Ala and Mrs Grenvillc Smith of Silver Spring Md eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren John John Holland whose distinguished record as judge of the District of Florida from 1936 to 1955 was marked by kindness died Friday in Doctors Hospital at age 89 His was a one-man court in one of the busiest districts in the nation until 1950 when he was relieved by a roving jurist On April 1 the year before there were 1711 cases pending in the district 998 of them were in Judge Holland's court He whittled away at them eight to 12 hours a day in often seven-day weeks The judge's capacity for hard work made it appear he was not following the admonition given when he took the oath of office The late Judge Alexander Akerman advised "Always observe Rule 6: Don't ever take yourself too seriously" But once Judge Holland stepped down from the bench "a disposition as bright as the Florida sunshine on a cloudless day" took over He usually walked the last few blocks to his office stepping off the bus and greeting everyone along the way A favorite luncheon spot was a sandwich stand near the Federal Building crowded with a motley assortment Judge Holland was born and reared in the red clay hills of Tennessee After getting a bachelor of arts degree at Union University and a law degree at Vander-bilt he hung out a shingle in his birthplace Jackson In 1910 he left his clay hills and went to Jacksonville where he became a law partner of the late Sen Duncan Fletcher It was Senator Fletcher who pushed the appointment of his partner to succeed Judge Halstcd Ritter who had been impeached by the Senate Shortly after Mr Holland became judge he fathered "I Am an American Day" An official of the Immigration and Naturalization Service Dr Haverfield moved to Pompano Beach a year and a half ago where he was an emergency room physician at North Broward District Hospital He began his Miami practice in 1946 after World War II service as a lieutenant colonel in the Army He received his bachelor and medical degrees at Ohio State University and trained in neuro-surgery at the University of Chicago Dr Haverfield was a member of the American Medical Haverfield Neuro-Surgeon Mrs Caroline Muirliead Services have been held in Taxco Mexico for Mrs Caroline Ycrby Muirhead former Miamian and sister of Oscar (Dick) Gardner Mrs Muirhead 83 died Thursday in a Mexico City hospital of injuries
