1OF THE CHARLOTTE 013SERVER Sunday November 6 1983 People A Gaffney dW each Takes Root In Tarzan's Jungle 1 Edited By JODY JAFFE Surgically Prepared It took "brawny board-flat" (as described in Life magazine) Mariel Hemingway four months to win the role of Playboy playmate Dorothy Stratten in Bob Fosse's new movie "Star 80" And that was only after Margaux's kid sister (not to mention Ernest's granddaughter) promised director Fosse she would do something about her "PG body" Two surgical breast implants later the role was hers answering one of Fosse's "original objections to her (her flatchestedness)" Hemingway's transformation didn't stop with the scalpel though She also dropped 10 pounds dyed her hair blonder and even parted with the famous bushy Hemingway eyebrows And for what? Says the newly rounded Hemingway in Life magazine of the Stratten role: "It was different I just said 'Gosh yeah that's different I should do that' 477l-virtM ::::1: 1 4 40: de 4--): 4 7 xJ 14 'Ss ki illy'tfS: '1' it'-' rie' 'e4: g'17 1 I I i--0 AL A 'i: 1: 1 rt il: -iI7 'f 1'1 'tt 44 I 11)! 5 -4: 1 1:: AP Photos yfv )A i 7Ui'1141- ts tj AA SASA 4 Now Gaffney SC has more than just a giant peachoid to be famous for The new Jane in the new Tarzan movie hails from this Southern city Her name is Andie Mac Dowell 25-vear-old daughter of the late Pauline Oswald Mae-Dowell and Marion Mac Dowell who now lives in Conover NC Mac Dowell a $3000-a-day Elite model can be seen in this month's Life magazine or on television hawking Calvin Klein jeans You can't miss her she's the one with the Southern accent And speaking of speech you may only get to see this Southern belle in the upcoming "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan Lord of the Apes" Mac Dowell's accent reports Life may be too thick Just in case actress Glenn Close's voice has been recorded for a last-minute dub job Says Daddy Mac Dowell of daughter And le's accent: "It's not as bad as mine" Oh in case you think you're dreaming if you see the new Jane around town you're not Andie Mac-Dowell makes frequent visits to the Queen City to visit her sister Babs Rogers Bob Fosse Mariel Hemingway Terri Garr Call her Ms Geisha Girl Teri Garr currently starring in "Mr Mom" quoted in Esquire: "I think it's funny that I'm on the cover of Ms magazine Me Miss Subservient Geisha Girl Most of the time I am If there's a man in the room I defer to him It's so sad when people expect fame to be so glamorous and great and then it's a zero Fame's not fun" to be among the yes-ers? Women with an overwhelming 81 compared to the 62 of the men who responded likewise Said one 35-year-old female (no names please) who liked writing over sex: "When it's going well it's like a continuous mental and physical orgasm The sensation is equivalent but with the writing it lasts a lot longer" better than sex Like Godiva chocolate and Haagen-Dazs ice cream That's the word from the more than 450 readers of Psychology Today magazine who responded to a survey asking "Is there any thing better than sex?" Seventy-five percent of the respondents responded yes And guess which sex was more likely Not Tonight I It Inc To Write The verdict is in Yes folks there are things In Atari May Have erry Christmas After All EN-en The Experts Can Err WEST dealer NORTH 1111109 A43 Q7 4K 1085 WEST EAST A876542 KQ3 V6 V110982 642 8 462 4A 73 SOUTH None Q75 A10953 Q194 West North East South 34 Pass 4 4NT Pass 544 Pass 6 All Pass Opening lead A Mickey Mouse Snoopy Big Bird and Cookie Monster It was in January too that Atari officials conceded they had a problem in the design of their 5200 joysticks the fact that the controllers don't self-center which makes playing maze games such as "Pac-Man" very difficult In critical comparisons of the 5200 with Coleco Vision the former was often declared inferior largely because of that joystick and also because of the relative dearth of available software Atari guaranteed remedies But things being what they were and are at Atari with reorganization the top corporate priority it has taken almost a full year for most of Atari's coming attractions to arrive Realizing the public would no longer buy any half-baked product they threw into the marketplace (not like the good old days) Atari had to bite the bullet accept short-term cash-flow problems and simply let its designers take their time in polishing games that extra 10 it takes to make a good game great Some Atari products were actually readied for sale months ago then pulled back when the software or hardware didn't live up to expectations For example it was discovered that the voice programmed onto the "Real Sports Baseball" cartridge chip for the 5200 didn't sound enough like an umpire making a call So now the title will come out just in time for the basketball season And at least one wise soul at Atari headquarters observed that there wasn't much point in putting out a special children's game controller (with fist-sized buttons and plastic overlay screens instead of a stick) if there was only one Muppet character game ready to release with it "We felt that situation would just cause consumer dissatisfaction" says an Atari spokesperson Three fun 'n' educational VCS games codeveloped with the Children's Computer Workshop "Cookie Monster's Mash" "Big Bird's Egg Catch" and "Alpha Beam" (an alphabet shoot-out) should be showing up on shelves this month All work with the new controller Then coming next month for the small fry and usable with any VCS joystick and game are "Pigs In Space" (a Muppet parody of "Space "Snoopy and the Red Baron" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" a beautifully animated game in which Mickey Mouse tries to corral some brooms wielding water buckets Correcting the major 5200 system flaw Atari is now shipping units with self-centering joysticks and is promoting the product at $119 (after manufacturer rebates) That's down considerably from the average $199 retail price last Christmas and is $10 or $20 less than Coleco Vision's current sale price By JONATHAN TAKIFF KnoghtR Oder Newspapers Given the spate of bad publicity Atari has been getting that uncovered mountain of trashed "ET" games the horrendous financial statements lifestyle stories about teenagers turning off their videogames and lately industry gossip that the entire Atari di- vision is up for sale people are certainly en: is' titled to feel skeptical about the company's future But now at last there 0ert? orT is light to be seen at the end of the tunnel for At ari's video games division If it just lives long enough to tell the tale the company should 2-3 have a very decent Christmas season season ANS This prediction was Takiff actually made at the January and June 1983 Consumer Electronics Shows where Atari announced the acquisition of hit arcade game titles such as "Joust" "Pengo" "Pole Position" and "Mario Brothers" (aka Donkey Kong 3rd) for its undernourished 5200 supergame system and also showcased prototypes of surefire kid-vid VCS 2600 system games starring By ALFRED SHEINWOLD If you often feel like kicking yourself for not getting the most from your cards relax The same thing happens to experts In this hand from the semifinals of 1 7 2 1983 Grand Na- i tional Team c- Champion- lay 4 --0 ship four 4 7 4 pairs of ex- ''ts) perts had strong 2 A i North-South i ll rt cards ''t ti Only one Sheinwold pair got decent results Interference bidding kept the first North-South pair out of their ideal contract of six clubs but experts Bob Hamman and Bob Wolff got to six diamonds Hamman ruffed the lead tested the trumps with the king and queen ruffed another spade and led a club to the king East won and led a third spade for South to ruff Ham-man got to dummy with the ace of hearts to draw the last trump with dummy's seven South discarded a heart on the seven of trumps and then took the rest with hearts and clubs At the second table Lew Stansby and Chip Martel playing for San Francisco stopped at five diamonds The opponents didn't interfere and the reigning world champions should have been able to reach slam in one of the minor suits Stansby scored only 400 points Allan Stauber also had problems He opened the North hand with one club and East overcalled with one heart East-West then stayed out of the bidding and South pushed his partner into six clubs East opened spades and declarer ruffed in the South hand Stauber led the queen of clubs which East refused then the jack East took the ace of clubs and led a third trump Stauber took the king of diamonds and ace and king of hearts discovering West had started with What's On Today Sunday 6 November one heart and two clubs Since West had passed it seemed unlikely that he had started with seven spades Stauber reasoned West must have started with four diamonds So Stauber led the 10 of diamonds and let it ride for a finesse East won with the jack of diamonds and cashed two spades collecting 150 points against an "unheated" slam At Nick Nickell's table West opened with a conventional bid of three diamonds! This was supposed to promise a weak seven-card spade suit and a bad hand Don't bother with such nonsense at rubber bridge such bids work only in a tournament with your favorite partner North passed and East naturally bid three spades Nickell doubled for takeout with the South hand and North passed for penalties North thought he had pretty good defensive strength and hated to bid four clubs with his mangy club suit South led the king of hearts and there was then no way to beat three spades doubled East is always sure of seven spades tricks and the ace of clubs East will also ruff a diamond in his hand unless the defenders can lead three rounds of trumps to take the trumps out of the East hand After the heart lead the defense couldn't prevent East from ruffing a diamond for his ninth trick
