Phillies the club announced Monday Phillies president Bill Giles said in a statement spoke with Joe several times last week and he made up his mind regarding next season There was a clause in his contract in which we had an Oct 31 deadline for renewing his contract for 1984 requested that the Phillies exercise their option not to renew his contract and he be given his release so that if he decided to play next season he could play closer to he said Morgan who lives in Oakland Calif reportedly is negotiating with the San Diego Padres to play there in 1984 The Atlanta Braves announced that they have decided not to pursue the signing of Pete Rose also given his release from the Phillies because he wants to be a starter Rose became free to seek a spot with another team when the Phillies dropped him after their World Series loss to the Baltimore Orioles NHL Player Suspended Tom Lysiak of the Chicago Black Hawks was suspended for 20 games by referee Dave Newell the stiffest penalty ever handed out by a referee for sending a linesman to the ice in a NHL League game Sunday night against the Hartford Whalers Lysiak who said he was contemplating legal action over the decision was suspended by Newell under NHL rule 67 that deals with abuse of officials He was charged with flipping the skates out from under linesman Ron Foyt during the game Foyt had ordered Lysiak from the faceoff circle at 15:05 of the second period of 6-1 victory over the Whalers More Free Agents Rod Carew a seven-time American League batting champion and outfielder Dan Ford of the world champion Baltimore Orioles were among seven players who filed for free agency over the weekend the Major League Players Association said Forty-six players have made themselves available for the
