Gentxel at the opening of the trial of the three men charged with kidnaping Billy Ranieri. The judge promptly ordered the crowded court room cleared and addressed himself to police officers: "Kidnaping, extortion and the slaying of state's witnesses could not I'll spend it all to keep Petitti in jail the rest of his life.

My life wont be worth a nickel if Petitti gets out. The extent of alarm felt in official circles over the Scully slaying was evidenced today by the elaborate precautions taken to safeguard the lives of all persons involved in the trial The Ranieri case is down in the police records as the climax to years of Mafian extortion which has kept many Chicagoans of Sicilian birth in constant fear of their lives. C. Suddenly the door flew open and four men entered. Three carried pistols, the fourth was armed with a baseball bat. Who owns that car in front? they demanded to know. Scully and his companions denied knowledge of the car, whereupon the man with the bat, cursing, began beating them.

Scully, defying the guns, ran for the front door. Triggers were pressed as he reached it, and he fell dead. Even with a dead man on the floor and the sound of their revolvers echoing down the street, the men did not run. They set upon the others, using the bat and the butts of their pistols as clubs. Pantalone managed to reach the street, screaming: Help! Murder!" The gunmen came running out, got into their car and drove away.

Last Friday Scully counselled with temporary, as had been hoped. It was said that it represented part of the ebb and flow which was to be expected. I Large Tree to Be Covered With Souvenirs for All Next Saturday (Continued From Page One) wish, but I should like very much to have them come to see me and to discuss with me how simple It is to get one of my dolls. Many little girls are very anxious to get one of my dolls for Christmas and I feel quite sure that if you tell your mothers and fathers that they may help you they will be more than glad to talk to me. Christmas Tree You see my dolls are so wonderful that they are much more attractive than just the ordinary doll.

And for the little girls who come with their mothers and fathers there will be a Christmas tree to play about with my dolls while waiting for the narents while I talk to them. And there will be souvenirs, too. My dolls sing and pray and recite and really are so chummy that any little girls who once see them do want them for their very own. I thought we might have a party Saturday, but I am so busy getting ready for Christmas, that I thought It would be nice to have a reception this Saturday especially in honor of your mothers and fathers. So be sure to tell them about it.

All the Property Save Thirty Acres Available for Other Uses Permission to dispose of property the Pasadena sewer farm has oeen granted to the city by the state board of health.

The action was taken at a meeting of the board on December 1. This releases all the frontage facing Pomona boulevard and the only restriction remaining Is upon an area of approximately 30 acres immediately adjacent to the activated sludge plant. Land Released For many years the state compelled the city to retain all the farm property in case of an emergency arising by which the sewage plant would not be able 'to care for the refuse. The raw sewage was then to be spread over the land and buried. The city asked for the release of the 188 acres below the boulevard and this was granted.

The purpose was to sell the property and secure sufficient funds to build a civic auditorium. Later the city made application to the state board of health to release sufficient acreage north of the boulevard which is choice property for business purposes and this action has been taken. Aid in Financing It is believed that the city will be ibin to secure close to $750,000 for the property which the state has released to the city from participation in the sewer farm. The idea was to apply the money from the sale of this land to the fund which would jompiete the third of the civic group of buildings.
