Victor Kodelja scored the game's only goal when he took a centering pass from Henry and booted the ball into the left corner of the Cosmos net at the 75:45 mark. But it was seven minutes earlier when Peter Mannos. a two-time All-American from NIU who had never played before more than 3,000 fans before, made a falling grab of rifle shot off a direct free kick from about 20 yards away. The crowd of an estimated 14,800 fans in cool Alamo was undecided on its sympathies as the Cosmos lined up for the kick after all, most of them came to see Pele but when Mannos stopped the shot he won over the audience.

It was exactly the same situation that produced the only goal in New 1-0 victory over Dallas Sunday and was set up when Bob McNab tripped forward Tony Field just outside the penalty area. The Cosmos lined up with Field, midfielder Dave Clements and Pele ail in position to boot the ball at the phalanx of Thunder players lined up between them and the goal. 10 yards away from the ball. Field made a pass at the ball but kicked over it without touching it. Clements followed swiftly with the same maneuver.

Then Pele stepped up and socked a low liner barely off the ground. It passed through the wall of Thunder players but Mannos saw it in time and dove to his left to make the most important save in his young life. Actually, it may have been merely the most dramatic save, for with 60 minutes gone Field took a pass from Jorge Siega that found him wide open 15 yards from the goal and blasted the ball at the net at a sharp angle from the left side. It was a cannon shot hat gave Mannos his most anxious moment. Amazed never saw a ball hit like said the rookie.

He slammed into the left corner of the net as goalie Bob Rigby, drawn to the side by pass, vainly tried to get across in front of the shot.

'TIL 9 There seems to be a few people who too happy with the expansion draft.

At least one man says un-American, unconstitutional. Liston to the rude dude who called yesterday to protest the drafting of three Dallas Cowboy players. Robinson. I'm telling you that Rozeile is gonna rum football if let him get away with this bleep. makes him think he has the power to allow those new teams to pick anybody they want from the established teams? That guy gets away with anything and nobody says a word about it, gonna end up tearing down everything the real good teams have built.

Like the Cowboys. like that they lose three future stars. it gonna take for people to wake up and throw that idiot out of the league? killing The man went into great detail about the talents of Roland Woolsey, Cal Peterson and Ron Howard, the three Cowboys who were taken in expansion draft. Obviously, this guy is hot and bothered because a big Cowboy fan. Or an uncle to one of those three former Cowboy players who now belong to expansion clubs.

Frankly, the guy make one single point which I agree with, but in case others are wondering about the fairness of this expansion draft. try to clarify matters today. First of all, we are not letting Pete Rozeile get away ith anything. Mr. Rozeile, as Commissioner of the NFL, is hired and paid by the owners of the league.

He is given his powers of office by NFL teams. Barry Robinson Inst seme talented players, bat nobody lost a star, much less a superstar. The Cowboys, for instance, had to give up three talented youngsters in Woolsey, Howard and Peterson. But about the same as the Lawrence Welk Orchestra losing its No. 7 flute blower.

No. 5 cymbals banger and No. 8 clarinet tooter. They are good, but they be missed much, espi'cially if they are replaced by even more talented young players picked up in next college draft. The main point is that the Cowboys certainly be ruined by the loss of Howard, Woolsey and Peterson.

Finally, for the bit about somebody waking up and throwing Rozeile out of the league, we have to go right back to the owners. They hired Pete and, no matter what you think of him, they seem to be pleased with what done for the NFL. Before he took office, it was a sport. Now a world. fee Dallas not hurt Rozeile does not have the power to steal studs from a strong team and strengthen the weaker clubs.

not a Robin II(M)d. To hear this fan tell it. Pete wakes up every morning, decides that a team has too much talent and calmly rearranges rosters. ilkgal, unfair and silly. And it is.

why it work that way. You the ground rules for this expansion draft were determined by the men who own the teams. They decided how it should work, and then told Rozeile to tell the world. Therefore, if a sound and solid team is ruined because of this draft, blame Rozeile. Blame the owner of that team for going along with the draft.

Bat I find it mighty foolish to believe that any team was mined because of the expansion draft. Sure, some teams By now probably still waiting for one good reason why fair for these expansion clubs to be allowed to choose players from other rosters. Well, give you 16 million good reasons all dollars. Tampa and Seattle paid an estimated each for NFL franchises. Until draft all they had received for their gigantic investment was a nine-cent postcard saying.

to the much of a refund, so part of the big fee was the right to choose 39 players in the expansion draft. That may sound like a real good deal for the new clubs but if you divide the $16 million by 39, you realize that these two teams paid heavily for what they received. To be exact, they paid more than $410,000 for each over-the-hill or young and unproven player they picked. There will be more benefits coming up when the new teams get some extra picks in the collegiate draft. But remember, they only own the rights to these players.

They mpst soon come up with a few more million to actually pay these fellows. $16 million, it appear they are stealing the NFL blind. From here, it even seem they are getting their worth.
