convinced him to become more active in Jewish life and he became involved in the Zionist movement After the war he helped organize the Irgun the Zionist movement in Hungary and helped Israel during its drive to become a nation in the late 1940s After arriving in the United States in 1948 Cantor Birnbaum studied at Columbia University in New York City He holds degrees from the Seminary College of Sacred Music and the Cantor's Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York Christians often equate the cantor's job with the "minister of music" position Although he does direct the call him for 10 years the native of Czechoslovakia has filled the highly visible role of cantor on the staff of Temple Israel 1014 Dilworth Road Although the Webster's dictionary defines a cantor as "a singer of liturgical solos in a synagogue" the job is more complex than that Cantor Birnbaum said "Actually I am a rabbi except that I don't preach (Cantors) go to seminary and we take almost all the same classes as rabbis Only when the rabbis go to classes on preaching we go to classes on music and classes on leading worship" he said "It's like doctors One is an eye doctor and the other is a heart specialist They are both doctors Well I chose the specialty of leading worship" Many years ago he said he was speaking to an audience of non-Jews about the importance of music in the Jewish tradition During the speech Cantor Birnbaum recalled he referred to himself as a minister a reverend a rabbi and as a cantor At the end of the speech during a question-and-answer period a woman in the audience asked an obvious question "She wanted to know just what a cantor is 'What's the difference About the inventor and his invention Johannes Gutenberg (1397-1468) a German printer was the first European to print with movable type cast in molds Type was hand set and printed on handmade paper He probab4 invented the press in 1436 or 1437 The masterpiece of the press was the Mazarin Bible (1455) often called the Gutenberg Bible Gutenberg had to borrow money to finance the Bible venture When he couldn't repay the funds he lost both his press and type Although the separate elements (type Ink press and paper) were not entirely his own invention Gutenberg printed work of excellent quality in quantity It is this contribution that has been so significant in the evolution of the printing
