Do you have enough general information on how your car operates so you can save money? If you answer no to both questions, what you need do is enroll in the class called. "My Car Is Making a Funny Noise." This is a basic auto care course for women to be held at Myers Park High School and sponsored by Central Piedmont Community College. John Moose is the instructor.

And if you have a husband or date who could use some handy tips, he can sign up for a similar course for men taught by George Brain. Both classes begin Monday night, but don't fret you can still enroll at Myers Park that night or Wednesday night. For five weeks from 7 until 9 p.m. on Mondays. and Wednesdays, in the basement of the school's auditorium, hoods will be lifted.

Hang on, now the cost is $4 for the entire course. How to buy a new or used car will be discussed. Mr. Moose had someone in the class the last session whose sister had bought a new car and it would leak everytime it rained. "Know how to detect this before you buy? Run it down to a car wash.

If there is any sign of a leak, the pressure of that water will show it up," says Mr. Moose. He says he's trying to cal garages and filling one unless he's checked them time they victimize one of to know about it," he says. build up a rapport with lostations, but won't recommend out. "I tell them the first my students, I'll be the first Here are excerpts from notes I received from a few women who completed the course: -Thanks for letting us know about 'women under the hood." I have just completed the course and would like to urge every woman who can to take vantage of the next session.

-As one of the many, many women who knew absolutely "Zero" about the inside of my car before this course I highly recommend this class to all women, young or old. -I signed up and got more than I bargained for. It was well worth the time and the $4. This was not a mechanics course but a good basic auto care course that I could understand and apparently everyone else did too. There were no dropouts and attendance was excellent.

Bernard and Murray Spain smile. John Belk, Bob Scott Mayor, Gov. Pat Taylor are smiling. A lot of other people are smiling. Every once in a while a fad comes along a few shirts are bought, advertisements use the idea and work it to death, people talk about the "new thing" but it really doesn't last long and it usually involves only one type of people.

Smiling is different. Last September Murray and Bernard Spain, the owners of Traffic Stoppers a "smile product" manufacturing firm in Philadelphia, were talking about the peace symbol. It appealed to a limited market and they wanted something different, something that could be embraced by everyone. They remembered a simple smile that had been used for years with advertising, but never really caught on with the public. So Bernard started doodling with smiles.

On his second try he produced the infectious smile that is becoming the biggest fad in the country. 9 have a happy day And Murray came up with the "Have a happy day" slogan that is used in conjunction with the smile. It was copyrighted in February. Now, three million smile buttons later, they are still pleased with the results. So is Charles Graham, the advertising manager for Collins Co.

His boss, Howard Seawell, the manager of Coly lins at Tryon Mall said why not use the smile thing in advertising. And that is when Charles started smiling. He went the mayor and asked him to proclaim July "Smile Month" and Mayor Belk did. Charles ordered 10,000 smile buttons to give Photos by Don Hunter away in the stores next week and got this weird sort of brain storm. Why not ask the governor to proclaim it smile month too matter, why not the president? he did.

Then he ran into problems. Twice a month, the Lieutenant Governor holds a proclamation day, but there were no proclamation days scheduled this month because he is expected to be busy with the legislature. Charles called a friend and asked if he would please call the governor and ask for a special ceremony. It was done and an appointment the official signing was made. Then Charles received an already signed proclamation in the mail.

Back to the old friend with "Help, what now?" The friend called the governer's offices again and the press office arranged for a "duplicate-original" to be sent so Lt. Gov. Pat Taylor would have something to sign at the proclamation meeting. So Charles is smiling again. But the president couldn't sign the proclamation.

Charles Graham called him and sent a telegram to him, but it seems that the Judiciary Committee land both houses of Congress have to approve the proclamation before the president even gets to know about it. Charles thought about calling a Nixon daughter daughters usually can talk their fainto things but the daughters are as hard to find. Well two out of three isn't bad. Collins is going to give away smile buttons to anyone who comes into their stores next week and the biggest smiles will get the biggest bag of popcorn in the world. Smile buttons aren't the only happy face products.

Posters, T-shirts, glasses, note books, stationery, patches, stick-ons, greeting cards, switch plates, bumper stickers, pajamas, key chains, folders and telephone pads are only the beginning of a booming fad. Charles painted smiles on his store windows. Next he plans to make a giant mobile with the smile patches to hang At left. Laura Seawell, wearing pajamas from Parasol, holds one of the many smile products that are invading Charlotte. The smile posters, notebooks and patches can be found in Design World.

Dear Abby Over Her Head In Debt By ABIGAIL VAN BUREN DEAR ABBY: My problem is that I am always in debt and can't seem to get out. I don't know what to call myself except stupid, maybe. My husband makes a good living, but the only things that get paid on time are the rent and the utilities beABBY ause he pays them. I write checks for everything else and also do a lot of charging. Right now I am overdrawn at the bank, have several unpaid bills staring me in the race and I am scared to death to tell my husband.

I am not extravagant with myself. It's usually something for the children or the house. This is nothing new, I have always been behind in my bills, but this time I can't see my nervous breakdown. Is there a solution? I will try anything. OVER MY HEAD DEAR OVER: First I will love is forgiving her when the devil makes her do it.

If he doesn't immediately remove you from the treasury department, resign. You can learn how to budget if you really want to, but until you do, let Hubby handle the family fortune. Close Friends? DEAR ABBY: My husband (I'll call him John) has had a close friendship with a man I'll call Mike. They went through school together. The only difference between them was that John grew up on the wrong side of the tracks.

When John and I were married two years ago, Mike was our best man that's how close they were. Well, Mike is getting married, and we are not even invited to the wedding. Mike told John that it wasn't his doing as the bride's family puts on the wedding and they are limiting the number of guests. The bride's parents are well-to-do, so that's hard to believe, isn't it? Also, John already had started making plans for a stag in Mike's honor. I can't understand it.

We are respectable people and know how to dress and conduct ourselves. I don't care about myself, but I know how hurt John is. Do we have to send them a wedding present anyway? What can I say to make John feel better? JOHN'S WIFE DEAR WIFE: The less said, the better. Even though bride's family puts on the wedding, the bridegroom is allowed a certain number of invitations, limited as they might be. And no one has to send a gift unless he wants to.

New Kind Of Rice DEAR ABBY: They have something new now. Instead of throwing rice at newlyweds as they leave the church, they throw tiny tissue paper hearts. These hearts come in a variety of colors and are about the size of a quarter. (I am enclosing one.) They cling to the trees, and they litter the church property until somebody cleans them up. Rice was SO much cleaner, could be enjoyed by the birds and what was left dissolved easily.

But those little tissue paper hearts create such a terrible mess just like confetti; Maybe if you will print Social Briefs Lamb-Stroud The engagement of Miss Deborah Sue Lamb, daughter of Mrs. 0. R. Sisk of 1148 Little Rock Rd. and the late Robert P.
