'1'1 Bargain Corner 'i 2Littes 3 -Days $3 it:) at a practice session that he missed completely several practice kickoffs Even the assistant coaches were rolling on the ground Nobody has yet figured out why Louie wasnl fined for that little caper They also tell about the time and this one is just rumor not and middle linebacker Dennis Gaubatz of the Colts got into a beef on the Colt airplane "Step outside" Michaels is said to have challenged Gaubatz Gaubatz thought about it for awhile rubbed his chin considered the fact the airliner was flying at 31000 feet at the time and finally replied: "After you" But anyway it is good to see the old leftfooter back in action A man who has split as many uprights as Louie has shouldn't have to sulk in a coalmining bar This way is so much better Black-and-Blue Central Division now has four teams with 2-1 records Everybody on the Baltimore Colts who used to know him is rooting like mad for ol' Louie Though he was a troublemaker and often a problem he won a lot of football games for them and John Unitas could lead him around behind him like one of those overgrown St Bernard pups who hasn't grown into his feet yet OH THERE are a million stories about Louie He crashed his ear into a light post in Baltimore one night and almost ripped out his entire tongue At the 1968 Super Bowl he challenged Joe Namath to a fight twice in one night and Joe laughed it off and sent Michaels a dozen red roses after the game in sympathy after he got through beating the Colts' brains out That was also the same time Michaels showed up so tipsy LOU MICHAELS Angry Kicks I i 1 1 i I a 1 i' I 1 1 1 I 1' 6 0 1 i By LARRY HARRIS Special The News BALTIMORE Usually stories about professional football end up in great triymph or tragedy There is hardly ever any in-between This is One of the good ones The story is abdut Lou Michaels and there someday soon should be somebody to put down his story in book form pref erably of the fiction type Nobody would ever believe hall of it anyhow Lou Michaels is now the placekicker for the Green Bay PaCkers lie has also been the placekicker for the Baltimore Colts and the Pittsburgh Steclers and a defensive end for the Los Angeles Rams with whom he broke in as a rookie Last year Michaels one of the few leftfooted straight-on kickers in history was all set to begin his seventh season with the Colts But there was this long-haired kid named Jim O'Brian hanging around' camp and be could kick just about as far as Lou and catch passes too The result of it all was that Don McCafferty in his first year as head coach for Baltimore finally had to tell Lou it was all over for him at least in Crabcake Corners You have to appreciate McCafferty' insight into the situation because Oble of course became the Super Bowl hero last year and has now not missed a field goal in nine straight tries You ALSO have to appreciate the sensitivity of Lou Michaels however To begin with he is built very similarly to those photos of those pictures you've seen in textbooks and museums with the title of "Neanderthal Man" underneath He has coal black hair a completely square jaw and hands that would dwarf a meat platter Unfortunately the jaw of said Lou Michaels has about the same resiliency as that of the one owned by Floyd Patterson When he was in Pittsburgh a mean little guy named Red Mack who never went more than 185 pounds in his life actually kayoed the 250-pound Michaels not once but twice in one night Anyhow Lou sulked and bitched and became very upset because after all only two players in history have scored more points in the NFL than he has Instead of calling around and trying to see if anybody needed a leftfooted place-kicker with a glass jaw Lou went back to his bar in Swoyersville Pa and spent the winter guzzling beer and generally moaning over his situation Nobody exactly knows what prompted Lou to come out of his actual self-imposed retirement this year and give it another try Maybe because 'way deep down in the child-man is a great pride that refused to accept going out the way he did Anyhow Lou finally swung a tryout with the Packers after it was rumored several other teams also wanted his services The new Packer coach Dan Devine watched Lefty Lou lift his powerful leg a few weeks looked around at the competition and told Michaels the job was his Since then Lou has done everything anybody could expect of him and he's being a gentleman off the field as well which is some kind of strong indication that things are going well He won last Sunday's game for the Pack over the Cincy Bengals and the result is that the National Conference's 11 011 UiCz I 11 1 III I-F-------tr---t ra plus 27e to 35e Fed Ex Tax per tire (depending on size) and
