announcer kept repeating that one phrase: "Don McCauley scores for North Carolina" And he left as a winner the man most responsible for the Tar Heels' 59-34 victory over Duke Saturday The man who made the big plays in the Big Game For No 10 things could not have been worse He was the quarterback the one who had put Duke within reach of the Atlantic Coast Conferenc championship the one win had to produce Yet Leo Hart spent most of the afternoon watching his passes fall incomplete scampering avay from North Carolina's incessant pass rush and often times falling prey to it He fumbled twice was intercepted one completed As he shuffled through the end zone toward Kenan Fieldhouse afterwards Leo Hart did not look up once There was no reason to The day had belonged to See McCAULEY Pg 10D 1 Believe it or not Duke led at One time 10-7 early in the second quarter The Tar Heels however exploded for 17 sec ond quarter points for a 24-10 halftime lead then gorged themselves with 21 points in the third quarter At one point the Tar Heels had a 43-10 bulge The Blue Devils made it a little more believable with a 24-point fourth quarter but by that time that game no longer resembled a contest McCauley was never better He shattered all kinds of records school and Atlantic Coast Conference and even surpassed the national rushing mark that was held by a Simpson generally regarded as the finest running back in college history The 210-pound senior's 279 yards gave him 1720 for the season 11 more than Simpson rushed for in the 1968 season for Southern California Dangerous Don put five touchdowns on the scoreboard on runs of 10 3 2 8 and 3 yards another ACC record Few people in college football ever had a day like McCauley He was the keystone of an eight and three North Carolina season and the victory over the Blue Devils allowed Wake Forest to win the ACC title The Tar Heels however weren't thinking about the Deacons They were just intent on total destruction of Duke North Carolina put Duke's Leo Hart under a heavy bombardmen forcing him to throw the football quickly For the longest while they took the long pass away from him The Duke rifle 'managed to escape in the fourth quarter for two long touchdown strikes Tackle Flip Ray and end Bill Brafford led the Tar Heel wrecking crew against Hart who completed only 13 of 38 passes for 260 yards McCauley's exploits almost dimmed a fine performance by Tar Heel quarterback Paul Miller The junior lefty whip sawed the 'Duke defense with his passing and his running and on one occasion faked al most everyone in the stadium See TAR HEELS Pg 10D 5 Statistics And Of all the various pains losing the Big Game the arch rivalry by a lopsided score at the other guy's field Is among the most agonizing Houston Tops ACC Champs In 2nd Half By RICHARD SINK Observer Sports Writer HOUSTON The storybook ending would have provided a Wake Forest victory The Deacons champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference after North Carolina's win over Duke Saturday afternoon would have completed their miracle season by upsetting Houston But not Saturday night at the Astrodome The favored Cougars returned a little bit of reality to the Deacons by wearing them down in the second half for a 26-2 victory I 11w (3 0 i oil i 4: licr irP-- it ri I 111 4 4- I bi1 )i 1 ::) 'c' 1 ellt ''4 143o (1N "0 Ir: 1 1' 6' 1 AI o7 1106 1 I
