his mind not to endorse President Nixon But Snider claimed Wallace had not ruled out a third party campaign of his own Snider said Wallace has no plans for a third party campaign but Wallace apparently wants to keep his options open to maintain a bargaining position within the party Snider said the governor has no plans to actively stump for candidates but will be happy for them to come under his protective shield for whatever that is worth "All these candidates have to do is take the lead and say they agree with what Gov Wallace is saying and that could help them considerably" said Snider Wallace he said believes McGovern will drag the Democratic ticket to defeat including governors congressmen senators and even local candidates Already in Georgia for example the major Democratic candidates for the US Senate have aligned their polities with and have said publicly they will not support Mc Govern Some of Wallace's close associates say the governor hopes to build his own base within the party around these candidates who turn to him for help "I think this is what he meant the other day when he talked about having a hand in restructuring the party wouldn't openly pledge support of McGovern if local candidates feared it would hurt their chances In addition to McGovern remaining nominees included George Wallace Henry Jackson Shirley Chisholm Terry Sanford and Eugene McCarthy Edward Kennedy 's name persisted at the top of the list of vice presidential possibilities And Kennedy vacationing on Cape Cod said again that he wasn't interested McGovern ate breakfast Wednesday with six Democratic governors as part of his peace-seeking missio The governors told him either Kennedy or Mills would be "great addition to the ticket" His campaign director said McGovern planned to call Chicago Mayor Richard Daley "within a day or two" in an effort to patch up their differences following Daley's ouster from the convention Gov Patrick Lucey of Wisconsin called McGovern 's breakfast meeting "generally optimistic" Participating governors were more hopeful of McGovern's chances than at a governors' conference in Texas a few weeks ago Governors attending with Lucey included Dale Bumpers of Arkansas Jimmy Carter of Georgia Marvin Mandel of Maryland John West of South Carolina and David Hall of Oklahoma Despite McGovern's apparent progress with the governors
