best films in recent years It ranks with "Patton" for which Coppola wrote the screen play Each is on the top shelf as a work of art and as a masterpiece of entertainment Each has king-size quality in acting Each is wonderfully uniform in mood and style Each has something bold to say And each manages a fascinating ambivalance entirely true to the confusing world in which we live "Patton" condemned war but spoke of its immediate exc it emen "The Godfather" lays bare a sickeningly evil sense of greedy amorality underlying the Mafia But it makes a saga of courage and shrewdness widespread within "the family" Coppola's collaboration with Mario Puzo author of the novel On the script of "The Godfather" has brought a great truck stopped during traffic congestion caused by other accidents The bus Orangeburg Saturday was elected president of the three-year-old United Citizens Party at the group's first state convention McCollum president of the Orangeburg UCP chapter was elected by acclamation Mrs Victoria Delee of Dorchester County a Low Country civil rights leader was elected vice president and John Harper II of Columbia was named state chairman by an 8-3 vote over Sidney A Moore Jr "Our party has moved to a new stage" Harper told delegates "We have moved to a state committee and the committee will make the decisions and I will implement them" ea the change would come after the committee had been in operation a year or even sooner and that the chamber would have representation on the committee In discussing the committee a few days after the chanter had approved its creation Bryant said the committee would not concern itself only with disruptions but would study every aspect of public education At the time the chamber approved the committee Bryant head of United Community Services (ITS) said that once the committee became a freestanding body it might get some financial support from UCS Hunter is past president of SC Filing Deadline Passes United Press International COLIMIBIA The filing deadline for county and local offices in South Carolina ended at noon Saturday minutes after a circuit judge reversed his own week old order extending the filing period Judge John Grimball dismissed his own temporary injunction prolonging the filing deadline by one week He decided at a hearing that he lacked jurisdiction to issue a statewide directive Grimball's decision came less than half an hour before the close of filing at noon Donald Fowler chairman of the state Democratic party said the Democrats will not reopen the filing period for any candidates who may have delayed filing after Grimball's temporary inju I tion last week "All candidates were duly notified about the possibility of closing the deadline today" Fowler said Saturday after the hearing "It would be physically impossible for us now to reopen the filing We can't look after everybody" Kenneth Holland an att or ey representing Fowler and the Democrats at the hearing said Grimball had jurisdiction only in the state's 4th and 5th judicial circuits and not in the other 14 circuits throughout the state Zile ib: -0 -'''1 mcgm" Niki a- "4: APr 10' 4- i- i I 4: t- 1 1 a ii-4 T77 -1 --a4 :10100 Charlotte Chamber of Commerce's Pub lie Education Committee has been appointed chairman of the chamber's Community Quality Education Committee The chamber agreed to form the community committee in December a suggestion of Donald Bryant current chairman of the Public Education Committee Since then the chamber has been looking for a man to head the new committee Hunter who headed the Public Education Committee in 1967 said Saturday that he accepted the job two weeks ago The chamber had planned to announce Hunter's appointment after Hunter completed naming his executive committee Because of his chores as a member of the lay council for the Billy Graham Crusade Hunter has not yet rounded out the executive committee He said Saturday that the committee would be "a cross-section of the community" rather than being composed only of chamber members Hunter did not want to discuss his thoughts on the committee's goals or operating methods until he meets with the full committee Hunter is executive vice president of Hunter Jersey Farms The committee was formed a month after the Community Relations Committee began studying the problem of school disruptins at a time when disruptions and the problems of the schools were a major topic of conversation The chamber's board of directors agreed then that the committee would have a fourfold purpose: To work to provide quality education for all children To promote the highest standards of teaching excellence To help provide the best possible physical facilities available To help promote harmony in the community On the way schools operate The chamber board of directors also expressed the hope In December that the committee would eventually give way to a free-standing body similar to the United Arts Council or the Metropolitan Financial Planning Council Both of those started out as chamber projects Bryant said then he hoped precinct organizations in Mecklenburg Yates says that in opposing Martin he is opposing the entire Republican organization in the 9th District "Of course they support Jim" One Republican said recently "Most of them urged him to run in the first place" Yates is his own campaign manager and his supporters are old personal friends with little political experience among them He has been spending "almost 24 hours a day" campaigning he said especially in Republican pockets in Lincoln and Iredell But whether he is making any headway is debatable When a prominent Lincoln County Republican was asked last week what he thought about the Congressional primary he answered "I don't even remember the name of the man who is running against Dr Martin" Yates says he is working on the assumption that local Republicans want a conservative and there are few people more conservative than he is In his announcement speech last January Yates pledged to turn America back from the "social experimentation for the last 40 years" He has taken direct issue with Martin on revenue sharing too much federal control he says On busing while Martin says that local school districts should get financial help from the federal government Yates wants no part of it Yates who at 47 bears a sort of square-jawed resemblance to Democratic presidential hopeful Edmund Muskie hopes to pull a page from the book of another Democratic presidential candidate George Wallace He wants to capitalize on the frustrations of people confounded by busing by taxes and by the feeling that government isn't listening to them Yates has a jingle painted Burma-Shave style on signs along the road that goes like this: "Don't just say What's the use Vote for Yates Lit's cook their goose" I Republicans Can Agree On Goal The Ninth District Continued From Page 1B ing but he has made several speeches before civic clubs Local government problems will be his biggest theme and it's only natural: Martin has been chairman of the Mecklen burg County Commissioners the Central Piedmont Regional Council of Governments and the NC Association of County Commissioners Martin has come out so far in favor of certain federal-state revenue sharing programs and he has said that a national sales tax might be a good idea if it is used solely to help finance local school systems He's polishing his image as an energetic young (he is 36) conservative who will carry on the tradition of retiring US A i ::1 -X litf: igg A Li kU ei: is A i 'H A- a- major factor in state elections Only members of the Richland County chapter of the UCP were on hand when the day-long convention opened although invitations were extended to more than 1000 persons across the state according to Harper Charlotte lawyer Marcus Hickman the man who man aged all of Jonas' campaigns is Martin's finance chairman For his own campaign manager Martin has lawyer Robert Bradshaw who personally built many of the Republican pletely green to politics and even his carefully trimmed beard is counted as a minus factor But Firpo has surprised some politicians by articulating several major national issues "Firpo's doing a lot better than we expected" one Charlotte politician said recently "lle's no kook" Still the man said that Fir po would do well to get 25 per cent of the votes in the primary Firpo has just begun to work in Lincoln and Iredell counties where Beatty is already well known "Beatty's been up here quite a few times" a Statesville businessman said "He's been plowing this ground pretty carefully tor the last three years" Already Beatty's campaign organizations in Lincoln and Iredell are set and according to local politicians Beatty has gotten a lot of young energetic types turned on for him An Ireciell County politician said the entire Democratic organization there has jumped On Beatty's bandwagon "They think he can win in the fall" he said "They're for Genghis Khan or anybody as long as he can beat the Republicqn" Lincoln Iredell Already Lined Up For Strong Beatty Campaign In Fall Rep Charles Jonas Jonas is not expected to throw his personal mantle around Martin until after the primary but Martin has already inherited most of the organization that masterminded Jonas' 10 straight election victories cise for the big war later on Beatty's handlers already have their eyes set on tile fall and a grueling campaign against Dr James Martin a charismatic young Davidson college professor and Mecklenburg County commissioner who is the golden boy of the Republicans and the front-runner in a primary of his own "Beatty and Martin are feeling each other out" says one of Beatty's closest political friends "Beatty's been quiet because there's no point in coming out and getting picked to pieces in the primary" Beatty will begin his big push shortly after April 1 He will formally open his Charlotte headquarters on East Boulevard and he'll start delivering a series of "position papers" that his staff has carefully been researching for him The few speeches that Beatty has delivered so far have gone unpublicized oil
