1 I RONALD GREEN RALEIGH The At-I a tic Coast Conference conducted a fourmonth investigation into alleged violations by North Carolina State University in the recruitment of basketball star David Thompson This was confirmed Tuesday by ACC Commissioner Bob James Ile said a report Of the investigation had been turned over to the National Collegiate Athletic Association headquarters in Kansas City James said the NCAA received a complaint alleging violations in the recruitment of Thompson who came to NC State from Cr Est High School near Shelby The NCAA made a preliminary Investigation James said Charlotte News sports Editor The Next Charlie Scott? As discomforting as it might be it is a tribute to the basketball genius of David Thompson that the NCAA and the ACC have investigated the 17-year-old freshman's presence on the NC State campus Schools generally don't blow the whistle on each other for fear of reprisal unless the player involved is special Thompson is special Some who have watched with mouth agape as he has averaged 40 points a game for the Wollpack frosh have labeled the strong 6-4 Shelby lad -a black Jerry West" Others compare him favorably with Charlie Scott who Thompson says "has been kinda like my hero since he came to North Carolina" Its early for such assessments Thompson is only 17 years old But the tools for glory are there in abundance 0 IP WHEN TIE LIFTS OFF and arches a 25-footer or dances the baseline for a layup or soars above the rim to claim a wayward shot it could be set to music and sung He can hit from anywhere inside the city limits climb the backboard without benefit of a ladder and he's learning to dribble "Flight of the Bumblebee" on the piano with a basketball "He's the most complete player I've ever seen" says Wolfpack freshman coach Art Musselman A Kangaroo Thompson has no greater fan than his coach "I just don't think anybody can stop David" Musselman enthuses "I know they can't "He could probably be the best player in the country I only go as far as the Mississippi in scouting but I've seen UCLA on i' TV and I assume they're the class of the West I haven't seen 4111Ps -1111' 11 anybody better than David" lit 4 Now? 1 ffrehaet ii 0 doesn't want his man to have the tZi4-4k I ball that man's not going to get it If he has a weakness it's well let's see uh well he doesn't dribble well with his left THOMPSON foot" THOMPSON is probably the best leaper ever to hit the ACC He regularly jumps 38 to 40 inches from a standing start in measured drills North Carolina's All-ACC star Dennis 'Wuycik can do 31 inches UCLA All-American Sidney Wicks jumped 36 Musselman said he's never heard of anyone going higher than 40 "I jump pretty high" agrees Thompson who speaks softly- and with a touch of shyness 'I credit that to plaYing against taller boys and good players" Such as 7-4 Artis Gilmore the Jacksonville University AllAmerican who is currently starring with the Kentucky Colonels and George Adams Gardner Webb's Small College All-American point machine "It's pretty tough to get a shot off against Artis" said Thompson With Gilmore He played against Gilmore when the giant was at Gardner-Webb and that's where he's tangled with Adams He was only 14 years old when he went against Gilmore "I've always played against older boys and bigger boys" he said "I could hold my own against most of them by the time I was 14 years old but it got a little rough inside at Gardner-Webb when Artis was there" Thompson has always hung around G-W or the Shelby Community Center since he took up basketball at the age of 10 He would practice alone in the mornings at the center break for lunch then play with the big boys until night when school didn't interfere "I liked to play with the older players because I figured that was the best way to improve" he said "I learned a few tricks from them" Now he could teach them a few 1VOLFPACK VARSITY Coach Norm Sloan has told writers in the past "If I told you Thompson was the best freshman in the country you probably wouldn't believe me so I'll just say he's the best 17-year-old in the country" Sloan sees him regularly The freshmen work against the N'arsity in practice and Thompson is the most talented player on the floor and the quietest "I've never heard him speak on a basketball court either in a game or in practice unless it's to say 'Yes sir' said Musselman "Off the court though he's very very alive ''But he doesn't need to say anything Every day's a new adventure watching him" Commissioner Confirms Probe At State "We agreed that at the conclusion of their preliminary investigation the ACC would make a full investigation" he explained in a telephone interview from Greensboro "We explored every area We interviewed Thompson citizens of his community and coaches" JAMES declined to disclose the contents of the report saying: "It would be Inappropriate since the NCAA Committee on Infractions has not reviewed the report" Thompson led the State freshman team to a 125-75 victory over Fort Jackson Monday night scoring 39 points and getting 17 rebounds He has averaged 327 points in six games this season By ASSOCIATED PRESS A week which started out as a great one for the Cowboys is rapidly turning into a bad one for the Indians The American Indian Center of Cleveland Ohio filed a $9 million damage suit Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians baseball team for using a comic Indian head as the club's symbol and said its next target may be the Atlanta Braves' Chief Noc-a-Homa Five of her professional teams The Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins of the National Football League the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League and the Buffalo Braves and Golden State Wierriors of the National Basketball Association more than 30 colleges have some sort of Indian nickname The Chiefs' symbol is an arrowhead the team does have a mascot Warpaint a 17-year-old spotted gelding which is ridden around the track of Kansas City's Municipal Stadium each time the Chiefs
