The Sacramento Bee Sunday June 19 1983 D7 Brides At Six! Volunteers Are The Power Behind The Scones Michelle Bello Mrs Joseph Milby Mrs Jeff Wardlow If YOU ENJOY Carl Sagan Jacques Cousteau and Dick Cavett on Channel 6 you may now relish them in an entirely new setting the At Six! Take a bite out of the Carl Sagan Bagel Cousteau Seafood Brioche or Dick Cavett Quiche And be sure to ask your waitress about another prime-time offering the Masterpiece Theater Special At Six! a new cafe in the Sierra 2 complex is the result of a monumental volunteer effort to support public TV station KVIE Channel 6 the only (cafe) in the nation used as a funding source for public television" proclaims a proud Denny Wiemers the coordinator and auction manager Four overseeing boards and countless volunteers struggled for almost three years to open At Six! the short form: When organizers first opened Sierra 2 a Sacramento community arts center they set aside space for a cafe Judy Schroeter then project manager for Sierra 2 asked Wiemers at KVIE to run it The involvement was logical: a non-profit landlord teamed with non-commercial TV Wiemers and the Friends of Six faithful support group) said they were interested in the project Wiemers submitted a proposal to Channel overseeing board Central California Educational Television (CCET) The board agreed to underwrite the project and a separate panel with representatives from Friends of Six CCET and business community was formed to supervise the work One of the major forces behind At Six! is Wiemers After work hours she has been volunteering her time at the cafe And it has been a labor of love have always wanted a she says with a smile this was a unique way to do How else she reasons could she open a restaurant with such minimal rent volunteer help and donated supplies? Six years ago Wiemers was concert manager at Iowa State Previously she had organized major fund-raisers When she moved to Sacramento with her husband Cal they immersed themselves in volunteer work for KVIE and opened two caramel corn franchises Eventually they sold the food business and opened a jewelry store Cal remained in retail and Denny left to work full time for KVIE Like ANY NEW business At Six! has not been without set-backs amazed it die along the she admits For one thing juggling jobs around the schedules of the varied donors delayed the opening had the money (to buy services) we could have been open in six months" explains Wiemers But merely a fact not a complaint At Six! considers itself lucky that more than 100 donors have contributed to the project For openers: Treaster and Green (interior design) Barrish Aldrich Schroeter (structural engineering) Paul Page Design (graphics) David Ribble (glass design) Seiss Wagner (architectural planning) Cook Realty (cash donation for paintsheet metal) Orchard Mrs James Manuian Mrs' Andrew Blackett Mrs Frank Shaw Mrs Albert Niggles Supply company (stairwell) General Home Repair (installation of doorswainscoting) and RJB Company and Chevron USA (cash donations for air conditioning) This list is particularly impressive considering that bud- -gets for many non-profit organizations are extremely lean now and businesses are be-siegd with requests for help Additionally a sandwich would never have been served without the efforts of certain individuals For two years Duane Masbruch spearheaded the dedicated At Six! board which includes Bill Farris Bill Millard Margaret Towne Jeanne Dugoni Cathy MacMillan and Ken Terry Kent Newton board member of the Sierra-Curtis Neighborhood Association and Una Flores Sierra 2 project manager helped organize volunteers to provide some much-needed manual work And Frank Cook a founder of Sierra 2 and an At Six! board member coordinated the labor crew which consisted of neighborhood volunteers and Friends of Six The two groups put in months of hard labor Cook explains that it was to the advantage to help the cafe open because it would serve the tenants attract more patrons keep visitors on the grounds longer and bring in additional revenue from rent for the SCNA Although labor for the renovation was donated the At Six! staff is paid Wiemers ex-' plains that volunteer help especially during the day is becoming increasingly difficult to find So the board hired a general manager Lou Weber and a German-trained pastry chef Petra Goesch to oversee the operation Paid -professionals also help ensure that the cafe meets its annual net profit projection of $20- (after the first year) But there is another goal besides turning a profit says Weber want it to be a people -place My concept for the cafe is based on cof- feehouses on the East Coast where I grew up like it to be a place where people can meet -each other and enjoy stimulating Among others he expects to attract near- by Curtis Park residents Sierra School patrons and educational TV devotees The coffeehouse sports a contemporary look with white chairs and a wine and green color scheme The fare is described as with an emphasis on good coffee fresh ingredients and baked goods Local art will be showcased and in time Weber hopes to add -guitar music poetry readings and other cultur- -al tidbits At Six! is located at 2791 24th St It eventual-ly will be open for breakfast: It currently is open for lunch and dinner For hours and days call 452-6666 it note: Michelle Bello is taking a
