The Sacramento Bee Friday December 25 1981 E3 Wrench In Works Young Nastase Not Intimidating Dan Vierria ruling says any open-wheel group racing cars with more than 2-liter engines cannot race the same weekend and at the same site And since Indy-cars have more than 2-liter engines that clouds the projected extravaganza in Las Vegas FISA said it wanted to promote its minor league F2 F3 and Formula Atlantic all of which use under 2-liter engines FISA CONSIDERS CART an outlaw circuit without ties to an international sanctioning body CART severed relations with the Sports Car Club of America more than a year ago and has since very successfully operated within its own guidelines late change has put Caesars Palace in an uncomfort- Bee photo Kevin Motor Sports By RE Graswich Bee Staff Writer Kevin 14 better not throw his tennis racket or shout dirty words at linesmen because Mr and Mrs tolerate nonsense grab Kevin by the collar and yank him off the court Mihnea Nastase 14 shares no such worries With a famous uncle Ilie as role model Nastase can scream and shout and complain so long as the scores end up in his favor So the other day when of Sacramento met Nastase of Romania in the Orange Bowl Junior Tennis Tournament at Miami the results were not surprising: began well Nastase began calling shots out sought relief from a linesman Nastase began complaining lost patience and began making errors Nastase won 6-3 5-7 6-4 wasn't quite as bad as his said Bob who accompanied his son to Florida fact he was quite good until he made a call that my son saw was clearly in and he called it out In junior tennis the person makes the call and the call stands even if the ball bounces in the middle of the court son went to get a linesman which is the correct thing to do From that point on he controlled all disputes Later on my son called one out that the linesman agreed with and (Nastase) got very upset It was kind of reminiscent of his uncle but it nearly as bad as his uncle can Kevin have a famous uncle He have a fulltime coach plays soccer as often as he plays tennis His trip to Florida was arranged through the courtesy of his employer: the elder is an airline pilot and dependents fly free Kevin had never before participated in international competition He offered no excuses in defeat "I fell Kevin said argue or complain during the match talked many times about that sort of thing and he knows we allow him to do Bob said Mihnea Nastase was not unique in Miami by virtue of his famous name The Orange Bowl tournament was flowing with family: John little brother was there as were Chris Evert sister and Harold sister The elder thought the Miami tournament would be good experience for his son because the international milieu is the only place where Kevin can play youths his own age American tournaments issue arbitrary October birthdates for players and Kevin born in August must play 16 year-olds was kind of curious because we had never seen any of the international Bob said gave us the opportunity to see what the other countries are doing and frankly the United States is at a big disadvantage For example in Sweden the tennis federation there starts looking at kids at the age of 7 "The ones who show promise begin receiving support at that time The ones who continue to show improvement get more support They reach a point I guess when about 12 with some kids where they may take them out of the home with parental approval and bring them to Stockholm and put them in special schools with Davis Cup-type coaches" Kevin was not frightened by his name Bob said Kevin won five straight games in the second set overcoming strong backhand and volleying hard to read said Bob think he felt he could beat him He intimidated at all" Could Kevin have defeated Nastase? said Kevin Was he intimidated by international competition? Bob said think he came away thinking he can play anyone in the problems with them (CART FISA) Together we have problems We have a problem with CART we have a problem with Formula One Our problem is with Caesars Palace encountered difficulties from the beginning It is not clear who recommended a separate course for the Indy cars but the Las Vegas casino-hotel decided it would be best to separate the two organizations to eliminate any embarrassments that might be caused by qualifying times on the same circuit SO THE FORMULA ONE cars were to return to the original 226- mile course where they provided entertainment last October to 40000 spectators The Indy cars would race on a modi- fied circuit vaguely resembling an oval That way a time could not be compared to a Gurney Eagle Formula One does not want to share billing with CART an organization that has made a big move into road racing The FI circuit lost its resident American Mario Andretti when he decided earlier this month to race Indy cars fulltime Andretti liked increased road racing schedule and the decreased travel miles between races Eddie Cheevers is the only remaining American on the FI circuit and he has not lived in this country since age 5 It seems ironic there are three FI races in the United States next year and only a trace of American representation on the circuit Europeans rule over FI racing while manipulate Indy-car racing THE CART organization based in Michigan had this statement: "We have an agreement with Caesars Palace for a race on Oct 16-17 weekend We have had no formal notification one way or the other and until we do our plans remain the same We entered this with the intent of providing the biggest weekend of racing in the history of the sport If the races fall through it will be very unfortunate for the world of auto racing works in strange ways sometimes" said Weinberger work it Or as Dan Gurney puts it: lot of people want LAST FRIDAY Jean-Marie Balestre president of the International Auto Sports Federation (FISA) announced a date change for next Caesars Palace Grand Prix in Las Vegas At a press conference in Paris Balestre announced there had been revisions made in the original 1982 Formula One schedule The Las Vegas race initially Oct 17 was changed to Sept 25 According to FISA the sanctioning body for Formula One the date change was made to prevent extending the season an extra three weeks but it was also made to ensure NBC television would not encounter a conflict with World Series coverage The October date in Las Vegas was to have been the third day of a mammoth motor sports weekend Championship Auto Racing Teams Inc (CART) had managed to schedule an Indy-car race Oct 16 at Caesars Palace And Oct 15 two days before the Grand Prix there was to be a Can-Am series race THAT THREE-DAY period was to have lured every top driver in the world and a sizeable portion of the world viewing audience With Nelson Piquet Alain Prost A1 Unser AJ Foyt Mario Andretti Rick Mears and Johnny Rutherford among the more than 100 drivers converging on one site it would have been an event to challenge the Indy 500 certainly not in tradition but in scope Now it appears the Las Vegas program is attempting to rival the 1981 Indianapolis 500 in confusion and controversy CART will have a race Sept 26 at Michigan International Speedway a direct schedule conflict with the adjusted Caesars Palace Grand Prix date Last Friday executive committee passed a ruling in Paris that torpedoes any further attempts to schedule FI and Indy-car double-headers The able position The hotel-casino wants the CART race but only if it can be scheduled on the same weekend as the Grand Prix The date change has also placed the San Francisco Region of the SCCA in a difficult position The region asked Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma to juggle its calendar to accommodate Sept 24-26 dates for its Pacific Coast Runoffs Now Clint deWitt regional executive says he is but not that a good portion of his race helpers will abandon ship to work at the more glamorous Grand Prix He said 60 to 70 SF region members worked as communicators and flaggers at last initial Caesars Palace Grand Prix THE EGOS INVOLVED here are immense Both organizations submitted 1982 schedules that included shared billing in October CART was jubilant about the projected event announcing it prematurely according to Caesars Palace FISA was less enthusiastic had to change the date because five weeks between Grand Prixs would just take the season too far into the said Bill Weinberger Caesars Palace vice president of casino marketing creates problems as you can imagine so going to have to investigate the situation and determine what to we have no UCD Athletes Perform Well In Classrooms cial-action athletes was 54 percent and it was 35 percent for special-action non-athletes The football and basketball teams had the highest percentage of special-action student athletes MacKenzie noted that because 4 to 6 percent of entering undergraduates are typically special action seems clear that some intercollegiate sports attract a significant proportion of special-action She added that among special-action football players graduation rates were extremely high and they were comparable to those of regularly admitted UCD students DAVIS Athletes at UC Davis outperform other undergraduates in the classroom according to a 10-year study between 1970-79 UCD students who participated in male intercollegiate team sports are likely to be better motivated in their academic life if they form a strong association with the institution said Bonnie MacKenzie staff member in the Office of Student Affairs Research and Evaluation As author of the report MacKenzie said way of reinforcing that association is through participation in organized activities such as sports programs We studied more than 1000 athletes using graduation rates and grade point averages as the measures of For both regular and admission (those who are accepted despite not meeting all university academic requirements) graduation rates of athletes admitted from high school were substantially higher than for all other undergraduates The data were collected for both varsity and junior varsity players in football basketball baseball soccer golf water polo and cross country The graduation rate of regularly admitted student athletes was 72 percent while the rate for regularly admitted non-athletes was 62 percent The graduation rate for spe f' TREMENDOUS SAVE 20 TO 53 Pkg Orig Now GREAT SAVING
