pilot whale snarled in a gill net about three miles outside Los Angeles Harbor On March 15 Butler and lifeguard Lt Wally Hapke responded to a call to untangle another 30-foot gray whale trapped an identical net but the whale freed itself by chafing through the net lines with the barnacles on its back Back ashore Butler expressed in terest in going to Sea World in San Diego to learn more about first-degree murder in the Jan 26 1974 killingof Lisa Beery 15 The jury rejected the defense contention that Hughes was acting under diminished capacity and thus was incapable of first-degree murder Three experts had testified for the defense that Hughes was psychotic and in a at the time he abducted the Oakland student near her home Assistant Public Defender James McWilliams had argued that the killing was act of a He said that because of psychosis he could not form the ntent to kill and at worst was guilty of manslaughter Prosecutor Richard Iglehart argued however that if the jury could not
