W' 90 y)r i -y arym Sun Sept 28 1963 THE MIAMI HERALD 3-D College Foo relatively low-scoring 16-14 defeat by Florida State notwithstanding Charlie Tate was not joking the other afternoon when he professed to be stunned by the gathering power of college football offenses because college 100th he said in all seriousness thinks they have to score that many You doubt it? Check the lists Auburn buries Wake Forest 57-0 in its first game Then Saturday in a game made for television Tennessee turns around and lays it on Auburn 45-19 This point picnic was staged in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville Tenn The stadium was named for the late Gen Robert Neylarld in my book the best of all Southern coaches Surely the old martinet must have Tennessee passes from its end zone Zounds! What effrontery to the general! Tennessee goes for the yardage with fourth and two late the game Another slap in the face of the football orthodoxy of which Neyland was chief conservator And it was all played on artificial turf Just as well the old coach was not around to see it It all amounted to sure-fire apoplexy for a traditionalist as blatant an insult to safety-first football as magical decision to go for broke with fourth and six against Miami the night before in the Orange Bowl But the Seminoles made it and because they made it they won I GREW UP with college football I saw my first game 35 years ago although my primary memory of it was being chilled by the sight of a massive black been whirling in his grave at the didoes aboveground I never saw a game in which almost every play was laced with such dynamite interceptions fumbles the bomb 'fmF' own bear who served as the mascot for Mercer University of Macon Ga Still I plead guilty to a certain addiction to pro hall Part of that is the continuing identification with its participants You get to know them or at least think you do when they have played so many years College football lacks this continuity Almost as soon as you form a bond no matter how vicarious with a college player he has seized his diploma and vanished into the downtown canyons of commerce seldom to be seen again except perhaps at a civic function or in some chance street-corner meeting Still the throbbing emotion of college football cannot be discounted It was at its best as seen here Friday night and through the tube from Knoxville on Saturday afternoon It veers frantically from palpitation to pom-pons from ridiculously amateurish plays to execution that would do credit to Super Bowl representatives It has soul brother There is Auburn down 21-0 in the first half then its grass-green quarterback Pat Sullivan claws back and heaves touchdown hits of 70 and 34 yards to Mike Currier There is Auburn cutting the lead to 24-19 Then as suddenly Tennessee releases a mortar of its own and uses two more interceptions to stretch it out to the 49-19 final If that entertainment a nasty guy to entertain FEATURE THIS In the second quarter John Riley surpasses by two yards the Southeastern Conference field goal record of 54 yards He pops for 56 A little later he misses an extra point That unreal triple unreal also college football If you were lucky enough to peek in both Miami-FSU and Tennessee-Auburn over the weekend you may have been looking at the Orange Bowl teams a long shot but a shot Tennessee was worried about its offense and scored 45 points Some worry I weep for them FSU quarterback Bill Cappleman got a savage rush from Miami and still completed 24 of 38 passes here said an FSU official got to be even better for Cappleman He spend that much time on the ground the rest of the For sure college football is wasting precious little time in winging into its centennial Auburn Tennessee 15 18 117 170 219 110 1 91 14 29-6 11 26 2 536 6-43 3
