pleasure to listen to She spends most of the night swatting lines out of the ball park after they've been pitched toward her by broadshouldered red-haired Robert Horton who Is supposed to be representing the more senile side of the generation gap The fact that Horton isn't Miss Dukes decorates the stage in maxi-miniskirts that cross her thighs at a heady altitude displaying now and then ample visions of what the British apparently call "knickers" But all this has a charming sort of amoral innocence about it symbolizing at a glance as it were the divergent points of view of the new generation and their guilt-ridden forbears On a par with these two in acting skill is the kooky COURT HEARING WTCU Owner Fights Debts To Stay On An Robert Horton Plays The Roue really paunchy and money's worth Michael MeAloney does a series of comedy walkons as the ball porter destined for perpetual defeat in his running word battle with Pauline Dukes Dennis Dougherty has done a masterly eyepleasirg set for the show one of the best of his highly competent season Living room screened kitchen and the not-neglected master bedroom all are laid out to public view of the 60-foot stage There's poignance as well as humor in this sketch about how it feels to be young and how it feels to realize you aren't young ary longer And if ''There's A Girl" doesn't really build any bridges across the accursed generation gap at least it does incline ore to accept the chasm philosophically The acting is of high quality Timing is all one could ask even though the show hasn't long been on the road You're treated to a glimpse of brightness and lightness along with that all too familiar life-experience of bittersweetness in this frothy interplay of two amusingly ill-matched human beings Theater To Learn Its Fate The future of the Charlotte Summer Theater may come out of the clouds in about two weeks Al Manch president of Theater Associates Inc the corporation that underwrites the summer theater said he will talk to Mayor John Belk at that time about 'a proposed lineup of some 100 local businessmen who would accept limited liability of perhaps $1000 in CST finances Also by that time Manch said he will begin to have an idea of just how this summer's productions came out in terms of profit or loss There have been indications of a deficit "We are not giving up" Manch said "The summer theater has been here 10 years I would hate to see it die "We're going to keep on fighting and see what interest there is in the commercial community "We have had some offers from people who want to participate and of course we are keeping a record of those" 45 CIT DISTILLING COOWENSDORO tf :1" By DOT JACKSON Obwver Staff Writer The legal tempest howling around WCTUTV Channel 36 has made no ripples on the screen The shows go on Lights blink on complicated panels super-sophisticated cameras hum two cost 85 thousand each and that one a hundred and monitors stationed everywhere beam back good bad and ugly unaffected "We can do anything hi television right here" The claim was pensively made For WCTH president Dr Harold Twisdale the future of his organization is up in the air The rust-sideburned cowboy-booted dent ist-television magnate says he is not ready to give ATTU up even though the court may decide on Sept 15 to place its facilities in receivership for debts against it WCTU has problems Some of them were foreseen when it was born in July 1967 Conceived as a local-interest station it lacked a primary network franchise As a secondary affiliate of the Columbia Broadcasting System WCTU had second choice of CBS netwosk shows CBS's primary outlet WBT-TV had first choice of the plums Too operating funds had to coma from sales to local advertisers These were not bad Twisdale said and are even now getting better But even in the beginning Twisdale said "People would say 'How in the world do you expect to do this without any of the big wheels in Twisdale thought he could He was and is a controlling stockholder in WATU-TV in Augusta and that station has done very well he said He was aiming here for variety with a strong local appeal "The first year we had at least 4000 local people on WCTU We had all kinds kiddie shows to the grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan Anything of interest "We've had bullfights and clowns and topless dancers (clothed of course) and we had a lady who wrestled bears We bad Citizen's' Salute that honored differen tpeople and 'Citizens' Editorial "And we never varied from our schedule no matter who was shot or being buried" Who dreamed up all the wild Ideas "I did a lot of it" Toisdale sighed In between times he mended teeth and dreamed up two more stations now going up In Memphis and Richmond Then debt began to snow the screen Arpex Corporation telecasting equipment suppliers filed suit in July and received a judgment for more than a million dollars That suit was capped by one by National Telefilm Associates a film rental agency for $50167 Te lefilmts local lawyer Hugh Casey requested the receivership hearing now pending On that matter Twisdale said "It atnazes me that Casey Is more Interested It ceems in putting us Into receivership than in getting a settlement for his client I don't know what he thinks that will get for them may be a can of floor wax or some stationery Everything ste have is mortgaged" The total value of the WCTII properties is a little under r-100006n Twisdalo figured The twoblory white block gurkesellan Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey $140 $990 By DIANE STOUGH
