series got a taste of real warfare on a recent tour of Vietnam He and Christopher George (he stars in Rat Patrol as Sgt Sam Troy) went on a for nearly a month Handshake tours are for those actors who sing dance or tell jokes It can be quiet a grueling routine They were up at 6 am every day and visited an average of five different companies by 7 pm or later They shook hands and talked with about 1000 troops a day You May Not Know It but You Are Seeing Fewer TV Series Army reserves at Ft Dix five years ago and lots of them are extending their tours" Casey reports He did not talk politics with these incidents beyond their proper proportion At one point in their itinerary he and George were captives in a bus they were aboard while it was surrounded by 2000 Vietnamese antiwar demonstrators are gypping them more and more Instead of the standard 39-episode cycle with 13 repeats the networks have gradually been working this down to 26 episodes with 20 to 22 re- HUMPHREY peats and the remaining four to six weeks of the year are taken up with specials preempting the time slot Not more than four or five network series now run a cycle of more than 26 episodes One exception is Bonanza which this season has 34 It also is one of the few series with a single sponsor (Chevrolet) and that probably accounts for Bonanza running ahead of the norm on orders The cutback of episodes has been done by the networks over the last five years a little at a time so viewers made too aware of it The reason for reducing the number of episodes by a third is obvious an economic one As production costs advanced on filming series the networks took the only way out and bought fewer episodes to balance their program budgets Most of series viewers have undoubtedly adjusted to the new cycle of
