fire that destroyed more than a halfmillion dollars worth of its equipment WAJA-TV (Ch 23) was back on a full if somewhat limping broadcast schedule Monday The station which left the air Saturday morning as flames from a burning trash pile blazed into the studio was able to return to the air at its normally scheduled time at 4 Sunday afternoon To restore Its important six-hour stock market quotation service Monday morning the station leased a mobile unit and one black and white camera from WCKT (Ch 7) The camera was set up in a corner of an as yet unfinished 3000 square foot addition to the studio building The Scantlin Electronic read-out device which projected stock quotations across the screen was de-stoyed in the fire so Alan Rock and Bill Nesbitt helmsmen of the Market program read the quotations orally to the market fans The New York and American market figures were fed to the station by teletype from computer center in New York Local brokerage houses fed additional information by telephone In the meanwhile the Scantlin company which had one of its read-out machines on its way for display at the forthcoming convention in Chicago of the National Broadcasters Association rerouted and flew it to Miami At this writing Channel engineers were busy installing the machine and hoped to have it ready for use this morning Judd Holstein vice president and general manager credited his engineering staff with preventing a complete disaster Saturday morning it been for their quick thinking there would be nothing Engineers Joe Vallenti Gene Lovinger and Gerry Home thought they smelled smoke seeping from the main studio Wisely they open the studio door but went outside via another door to investigate They found flames from a blazing trash pile near the double doors to the studio being whipped by a high wind up the doors The inside air conditioning was sucking the flames through the door cracks into the studio where it had ignited the sound proofing insulation chief engineer Mert Knold immediately pulled the master switches which cut off all the said Holstein stopped the air conditioners and any electrical shorting that might have added to the progress And that saved the The loss which included all its cameras four black-and-white ones and a color one is covered by insurance Holstein said but it was a sorry sooty Ntw South Miami Too!
