Whether it surpasses other shopping areas in SoBay within the next few years or within 30 years depends on what interested citizens do about it but the day is sure to come when big stores will be located there. This is due to the fact that parking space is available; and that the state highway will depend on Redondo Beach blvd. as a feeder for their freeway from the airport to the harbor. It will cross Redondo Beach blvd-. at Hawthorne av.

The feeder line will probably not be Manhattan Beach but Marine or Rose-crans. The highway system has an income from gas taxes of $11,000, Plan 750 Sq. Ft. Bartlett, manager, So. Edison Co.

The crews are working in various sections of North Redondo. Sam Greenberg Leading Redondo Beach Merchant by Reflex-Messenger Biographer If a popularity poll was taken in Redondo Beach today, Sam Greenberg, headman of Carrolls Jewelers, would rank high, if not number one man, among the retail merchants. Born in Bacau, Roumania, Greenberg came to the U.S.

at the age of sixteen, acquired U.S. citizenship in 1929 and today is a far better American than many native born citizens in the 4 and 5 generation class. v- Greenberg completed his education in the L.A. schools and after many years in the retail business in various. lines, came to Redondo 3'A years ago and entered the retail jewelry field.

The store in the Dr. Al Protsch building is one of the oldest retail businesses in Redondo. -Greenberg is married to the former Regina Schwartz, a native daughter, born in L.A. Two children, Carofe and her brother Joel have increased the Greenberg family to 4. Carole is 14 and Joel is 9.

Greenberg has always been interested in civic betterment. In 1945, after blackouts, brownouts, shortages and other things had complicated normality during the dark war years, Greenberg, newly tablished in the SoBay decided that Redondo should decorate its shopping dist. during the Christmas holidays, conferred with his fellow merchants and as a result was handed the job of securing the funds needed to deck the town in yuletide trimmings. Greenberg took on the assignment, took a whale of a beating in time and effort but succeeded in putting his idea over. The Redondo shopping dist.

now glitters annually at Chirstmas. The street display is 3 yearly tribute to Sam Greenberg. He is probably acquainted with more shoppers in Redondo Beach than any other merchant who lived here such a short time. Greenberg is active in the Elks, the Redondo Chamber of Commerce and Business Mens Division, and the Redondo Lions Club, serving op the board of directors and holding the office of 2nd vice-pres. I of the C.

of C. Perhaps unwittingly, Sam brought a new note of lively fellowship to the Friday lunch meetings of Redondo Beach l-ions Club. Being a ooy at heart, he would give some other member a terrible verbal ibbing, or play a prank on him. If someone turned the tables on him the next minute, to give him a thorough drubbing, Sam took it good laturedly in the spirit of give and take. This is how hilar, ty was brought to fljese civic club meetings.

He was among the group which organized the Jewish congre gaion in the SoBa.y. Temple Menorah, local center of Judaism, owes much to the work of Samuel Greenberg, in getting it started. Sam works hard both at his business and his civic organizations. Trial of a Garwood rubbish load packer was staged Thursday morning for Mayor Charles H. Wortham and other SoBay city officials.

It was discovered that the special truck picked up twice the amount of rubbish as the present method. Also, the truck packs the rubbish, so that twice the amount is carried in each load to the dump. Special elevators save heavy lifting on the part of the men. Cost of the truck would be $7,200 as compared to $4,000 for the conventional style truck; but it should pay for itself the first year, said Wortham. Accompanying Mayor Wortham, in making a regular run of rub bish collection were Mayor Wm.

F. Suppe, and Clifford G. Petrie, city manager of Manhattan Beach, with Clarence Koon, street and Redondo Beach city engineer Louis Goss and street supt. Jess Fifield. Ask State Funds For Redondo Blvd.
