Wyoming Turns Back And 20 To 7 In Gator Bowl 5- 2-B THE MIAMI HERALD Tuesday January 2 1951 All-American Talboom Sparks Cowboy Victory By BARNEY WATERS Herald Sports Writer JACKSONVILLE Wyoming's Cowboys brandishing the gang-tackling tactics that gave them the college defensive championship made split-T soup out of Washington and Lee's vaunted offense here Monday to brand a 20-7 victory into the records of the sixth annual Gator Bowl classic Labeled as "untested" by Washington and Lee followers tn the heated verbal warfare which preceded the game the men from the West showed the 26654 fans exactly why their slanderers were wrong They gave Quarterback Gil Eocetti no time to cavort in the usual spiit-T fashion They covered pass receivers like blankets They murdered any back who broke into the secondary for a short gain They just wouldn't be trespassed That in short 1b why Washington and Lee's attack could breaks like that without suffering the consequences n't be propelled Not with an All-American by the name of Eddie Talboom directing the single wing protrusions of his outweighed Cowboys Talboom called signals to perfection passed for a touchdown set up a second scored a average His generalship was magnificent At times his gambling methods may have attracted the attention of Wyoming Senator Lester Hunt who was fresh from a Ke-fauver committee hearing in Tampa One gamble paid off It was on the first play of the second quarter when he rifled an eight-yard pass to blocking back Dick Campbell for Wyoming's first touchdown Incidentally this pass was presented to the Cowboys through the courtesy of Talbot Trammell defensive halfback from Ponce de Leon High In Miami who wasn't where he should've been The 155-pound gem who was rejected by Tennessee coach Gen Bob Neyiand because he was married kicked the extra point In fact one of the claims against the Cowboys' chances was that Coach Bowden Wyatt a former Vol All-American got Neyland's "rejects" That may be so but pardner them's good leavings Just before that touchdown the Cowpokes had ridden herd to the W-L five on passes of 14 and 33 yards to End Dewey McConnell and 15 to End Jerry Parker But the Generals stopped that drive on the three when Talboom lost on a last down gamble pass After two quarterback sneaks by Bocetti had failed Halfback Ray Leister whose poor punting Continued from Page I peared that one touchdown might be enough Then Ortmann went to work from his own 20 He caught End Fred Pickard for 15 yards again for nine Michigan began to roll Dufek alternated to hammer the California line Ortmann connected for 15 to Dufek and Michigan sailed across the midfield stripe Into Bear territory Ortmann and Lowell Perry went for 12 on a pass and the Bears were in a frenzy Allis caught one A pass interference penalty on safety man Dave Waters completed a 12-yard pass to McConnell on the General two and the All-American scored the last touchdown of his career' at Wyoming With a two-yard submarine bust through right guard Washington and Lee which hadn't shown a bit of offensive ability since Fullback Charlie Holt's fumble had marred a game-opening drive began to move after the ensuing Cowboy kickoff Starting from their 31 the Generals perked up by a 32-yard pitchout gain to Halfback Randy Broyles moved to their foes' 18 Gains of nine and four yards sandwiched arountj a seven-yard loss put the Generals on the Wyoming 21 with one down to make four yards Leister passed on that down to Trammell whose eager hands came within inches of grabbing a touchdown That took the starch out of the Generals although they managed to push across a last quarter touchdown when Bocetti climaxed a 49-yard advance by sneaking across three yards Harry Brewer kicked the point and the game ended shortly afterwards Wyoming's third touchdown came in the middle of the third quarter and was the result of a poor 20-yard punt by Leister which went out of bounds on the W-L 25 He was punting from the five because a wild pitchout from Bocetti to Broyles had lost 16 yards on the preceding play Talboom lost two on the ground passed to McConnell for nine and Fullback John Melton squirted through the middle for the remaining 18 yards Tal-boom's kick was true to give him a 42 of 48 conversion record for the year 5 I Talboom didn't play much during the last two periods and Harry Geldien a husky colt from West Allis Wis took -over his duties Th 185-pound sophomore may not have been able to fill Talboom's shoes this year But this kid's feet are going to grow Those pedals carried him for 56 yards net in 1 1 carries and that includes two losses of seven- and nine yards which were the result of spotty blocking WYOMING 0 13 7 BM WASHINGTON AND LEE 0 0 0 Wyoming: scoi'tna: made a mere one foot But on fourth down the sophomore from Chicago went over and the Michigan went wild And wilder when Allis converted With time running out the scoreboard clock was out of order in the final minutes California got nowhere in four downs deep near its own goal and surrendered the ball to Michigan on the 13 yard line Dufek went on to add the deciding touchdown These were the big moments but the game was close and evenly matched California's supporters went Into ecstasy on the second play of the game from scrimmage when Sehabaram making i last appearance for the gold and blue reeled off a 73 yard run across the enemy goal But the play was nullified by a back-field In motion penalty California went on to drive down to the Wolverine 23 but Marinos electing to run instead of
