Mt (tfliarloil Sunday October 8 1967 Section CARDS LEAD 2-1 Briles Dam ST LOUIS -'UPD- Lou Brock's booming leadoff triple unwound the Boston Red Sox Saturday and Mike Shannon pulled the string with a two-run homer in the second inning enabling the St Louis Cardinals to beat the Red Sox 5-2 and take a 2-1 games lead in the World Series The huge crowd of 5A575 largest in St Louis sports history was barely seated when Brock lined Gary Bell's second pitch into the left centerfield alley for three bases and trotted home on Curt Flood's looping single to center pitches easing his way out of three sticky innings by getting Yaz on harmless rollers to second baseman Julian Javier The husky right-hander who yielded seven hits but permitted only two runners past first base was in control throughout the game played in glaring hazy sunshine alter a heavy mo i mist had burned away He struck out four and held the Red Sox power in check except for Reggie Smith's lead-off homer in the seventh in ning which cut the deficit to 4-2 Brock scored two runs for the Cards just as he did in St Louis' 2-1 first game victory He struck quickly this time before Bell even had time to realize this was the first batter he had ever pitched to in World Series play His line shot carried between left fielder Yastrzem-ski and centerfielder Smith and rarommed off the wall Yaz retrieved the ball on the warning track but the relay from Rico retrocelli to third An inning later Shannon followed a single by Tim McCarver with a solid blast into the left field seats With that beetle-browed St Louis pitcher Kelson Briles a 24-year old former actor had all the support hch needed although Brook's swift legs and Orlando Ccpeda's awakened bat provided insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings Briles making his first World Series appearance befuddled Boston slugger Carl Yastrzeniski with his no-windup delivery and hreaking baseman Dalton Jones was just too late Flood then dropped his single in front of the onrushing Smith before Bell pitched out of the inning by getting Roger Maris on a double play bouncer and retiring the meek Cepeda on a pop-up The second inning was even worse torture for Bell a 30-year-old journeyman right-hander McCarver hit a sharp bouncer up the middle and Shannon See 2 HOMES 2D 7 3 1' CARD GAME: Cepeda (L) Shannon Play Patly-Cake It's Really A Hand-Slap After Shannon
