Couldn't Deliver 'Best Little Old Job' in the U. 5. Navy Is Claimed by Hub High Graduate Island Outlook Given to Lions Keagy Elected' Firm Official PAGE 2 Wednesday, June IS, 1911 Accordionist Is Added Attraction FRESNO, June 18, (U.PJ It was a $50,000 sale and no commission but Fresno Postmaster James JL. Koyle couldnt deliver the goods. Koyle said a Fresno man had cleared a check for $3750 through his office for a $5000 defense savings bond.

Then he planked a $50,000 check on Kojles desk and asked for a bond in that amount. No sale here, Koyle said. Youll have to take it up with the treasury department in Washington, D. C. Tommy Gilmore, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Ed Gilmore of Route 2, Marysville, is pretty happy in his new job, which, according to a letter from him received by his perents this week, is "one of the best little old jobs in the Uncle Sams navy. Gilmore, a graduate of Marysville high school is radioman on the private plane of Admiral King, Commander in Chief of the U. S. Atlantic fleet.

Recently transferred, he was told by his superior officer that he was selected because he was one of the best men in the crack patrol boat squadron with which he had been serving. He writes that his new job will take him all over the east coast from Greenland to South America. He is stationed at Newport, Rhode Island, but expects to fly to Los Angeles in the near future to take delivery of a new Lockheed bomber, which he and other members of his unit will fly back to Rhode Island for the use of Admiral King. Gilmore writes that his new job will give him a better opportunity to study for the post of chief radio operator. Part of Gilmores job is to ac company Admiral King as bodyguard on frequent trips to Washington, D.

C. So we had target practices the other day. I used my own .45 and did so well that Admiral King is getting a special permit for me to carry a gun any place in the states. He also gave me a blank order to get another gun for pocket use and a shoulder holster for my .45 and orders to learn how to use both fast. I have no watches to stand and nobody bothers me.

For instance, I went over for some tools I needed and had just been for a hop. Well, the hop was rough and the boat ride to the dock was rough, so when I got out I was still weaving when I walked. The senior shore patrol grabbed me, said I was drunk and wanted my liberty card. Eo I told him I was on the flag plane and didnt have a card. He asked what flag.

When I said Kings, he told me to take it easy. "I had to laugh at him, and then I told him why I was walking as I was. He had to laugh himself, and then he told me it was dynamite to arrest any of the flag's gang. Sixteen on Draft List Are Sought Local Counties Face Tax Rise (Continued) cooperation in trying to arrive at some satisfactory solution. I believe that the public has a right to expect better service from its servants in Sacramento, Apparently, the entire financial burden for relief has now been dumped into the laps of the taxpayers of the counties of the state.

I use the word apparently because I firmly believe that that will not be the ultimate result. If this actually occurred, all the rural or cow counties could take it far better than the large centers like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Alameda counties, and I firmly believe that there will be raised such a storm of protest from those centers that the governor will soon call a special session of the legislature and with, (it is to be hoped,) some satisfactory solution. Yuba Cost Estimated Let us assume, for the moment however, that the legislature is not recalled and the counties will have to take over this financial load, then how will it affect Yuba county "If I am not mistaken, the case load of the SRA has, as a result of criticism and pressure dwindled rapidly in recent months; that in Yuba county there are about 125 families on SRA relief. The states average cost under SRA for relief has been approximately $37.55 per month. In that case, if these 125 families have to be taken over by Yuba county at the states past average cost of $37.55 per month, then this would amount to $4693.75 a month, which would amount to, say, $56,250 a year.

However, it is, I believe, absolutely safe to assume that 25 per cent of these families will find employment, in which case the estimated annual cost to Yuba county would amount to say $42,187.50. To raise this additional sum of money, on the basis of the present county assessment would require a rate of say 23 cents to the present county tax rate. "Of course, an extra rate of 23 cents for this relief would be an unpleasant pill to take, but it is going to be such a bitter pill for Los Angeles, San Francisco and Alameda to swallow, where the relief problem is so vast, that unquestionably in my opinion, these large communities will raise such a howl that the governor, with his ear to the ground, will very soon call another session of the Explanation of Differenfial in Prices Of Fuel Oil Clears Up Council Puzzle Independence, scheduled to go Into effect In 1946, will be a hard blow to the Philippine Islands, and the enthusiasm over the prospect has waned considerably In the light of recent world developments, according to Charles Perry, who od-dressed the Lions club In Hotel Marysville Tuesday. Perry, representing a large photographic supplies firm and resident in the Philippines the past 10 years, was a guest of Dr. Stanley Parkinson at the meeting and was drafted to speak.

Although the better posted Filipinos realize the dangers of independence to such a small nation in todays international set-up, they I still want the honor of being inde- I pendent of trying the wings they have grown during the 40 years they have been protected and trained by the United States. They want the Philippines for Filipinos. Americans to Quit Perry said many American firms are preparing to pull out when the American protectorate over the islands ends, and many of the privileges the Filipinos have enjoyed under the American flag Will of necessity be withdrawn. The speaker described Manila as a city of contrasts, the new portion, built since America took charge, being extremely modern in every particular. But the old walled city also remains, in such like its original condition.

The moat has been filled, however, and is now a golf course, encircling that section. A trip from San Francisco to Manila requites but five days, by way of the Pan-American lippets, Perry said, but it still requires ill days by ocean liner, since the ships follow the trade routes, wlm rover stops in Japanese and Chinese harbors on route. President Frank Moivan eomlis -ted the meeting discussed tile Lions convention tins week in Los Angeles, winch he will attend I r. G. Parker Tubbs and wife will be other delegates, and Wallin Smith expects to fly down, taking lime off from the fair at Auburn, where he is some of his Palomino horses.

Marysville common council, which was puzzled at last meeting by the differences in prices of fuel oil for heating purposes in the city hall, the Packard library and the Marys-vilel elementary schools, will have the puzzle solved when a report on the subject is submitted next Monday night, or at some future date. The Western Oil Turner which offered a contract to supply Ferd Drayer Takes Hudson Dealership Ferd Drayer, formerly of Oakland, has just become established as a Hudson dealer for the local community and vicinity. His agency is now located in temporary quarters at 748 Plumas street, Yuba City, but negotiations are now under way for other quarters and it is expected that an announcement of a new location will be made soon. For the past four years Drayer has been engaged in the garage and used car business in Oakland. He Is not a stranger to the valley, however, as his mother and stepfather, Mr.

and Mrs. W. J. Rankin, are residents of Chico. "I consider this the most desirable location in northern California, said Drayer Wednesday, and it is my intention to become a permanent member of your business community.

In addition to the Hudson agency I am selecting a location where a service station will be an active part of my operation. The 1941 Hudsons are now stocked by Rrayer, who invites to public to call and get acquainted with them and with him. The new models are lower, longer and more graceful in silhouette and contain various improvements, Drayer 1 oil for the city at a price of 7 cents a gallon, explains that there are three grades of oil supplied for three types of heating plants employed by the city and by others in the community, each adapted to a particular purpose for which the others cannot be used. A. Bruce, manager of the Western company, explained that the 5-eent oil used in the furnaces at the school is a heavy black oil, adaptable to large furnaces and boilers, with which rotary burners are used.

The 7'--cent oil, which is of light viscosity, is use to fire heating stoves, such as are used in many homes and other buildings. The third grade is the Diesel oil, which soils at 61- cents, and is used in some of the furnaces that heat boilers. Bruce explained that the cheap black oil cannot be used in the other types of heating plants, nor can the lighter oils be use in the heavy boiler-type plants. The plants can be operated only with the particular type of oil for which they were built, Bruce said, and those types are supplied at stand-aid prices to all concerned. Allotment Deadline Ray E.

It is important that all those wishing to plant wheat for harvest in 1942, who have not grown any wheat in the three years mentioned, get in their requests by the above date as no allotments will be issued to new wheat growers after that date.
