St. Mary's crashed back into big-time football spotlight as they upset California In crushing defeat of 20-13 before uprise crowd of 70,00. Senators Success Depends on Tiger Schedule; National League Unchanged The Marysville Giants, winners last night by a 5 to 4 acoro over the Muir Athletic club of Sacramento, cke their seas in next Sunday with a double-header. The local nine is scheduled to travel to Folsom prison in the afternoon to play the inmates, and then return to Bryant field for a meeting with the Sacramento Rookies the same night. There will be no post-season games, according to John McGowan, business manager of the Giants McGowan stated he had received word from the Sacrainonto Solon stating thej- would play no postseason games.

The Giants last night evened the four game series with the Muir club, although for a minute it looked like the invading nine would come from behind to win in the last inning, like they did 1 ere before. lake Early I a-ad They had the tying run on I third base, but Pitcher Bob Hemphill forced Frank Bowa, Muir second baseman, to pop out to Emit Barber to end the thrfat. Marysville took a one run lead in the first toning, added one more in Ihe third and three more in the seventh. Hemphill kept Mutr under control until the last Inning, save ter a brief one run sot to in the fifth. In the final round, the Sacramento team scored three runs before Bowa flied out to Baroer.

Elmer Newman scored in the first inning when Tony York, big league shortstop, poled a long double to the flag pole in center feild. He was thrown out tiying to 'stretch it into a thrje base hit. York Scores Run The Giants scored again in the third when York walked, stols second and rame home on a single to left field by Dick Hoskins. The lig Innings for the locals saw Newman collect another htt, urk being walked again and Tub Perry, playing right field, alngl-Ing to center seortng Newman from MMond, Rags Domlnguer singled sending York home and Perry to third. Tuh scored a few minutes later on a wild pitch by Sonny Havry, Hemphill gave up only four scattered hits until the last Inning when they added three more.

He struck out fight man. He was in complete rontral throughout the first eight Innings. The Giants ended their hitting slump, collecting 10 hit off Dn-vey. Barber, however rouldnt shake his off, going without a hit for thr fifth straight week-end. The box score: The amp Beale Bears today be-gaa preparing for a trip to Corvallis, Ore, this week end, where the local football team will help Oregon State opea its first football season in three years.

There will undoubtedly be plenty of work for the local eleven this week, after last Saturday night's scoreless tie with the Stcckton Commandos at Knight field. Had the Bears been able to keep any sustained drive going they would have defeated the Commandos, but each time something went wrong and a fumble resulted. Camp Beale first lost a chance to score late in the first period when they advanced the ball to the Stockton seven. A fumble put them back on the 11 and two more plays failed to take them anywhere. A reverse from Jimmy Walthall to Herman Detervilie put Ihem in scoring position as Detervilie scampered over his own left tackle for 20 yards and a first down on the eight-yard line.

Brady Is Injured Midway in the second period Camp Beale recovered a Commando fumble on the Stockton 21. A pass from Walthall fell incomplete, another pass from Walthall to Detervilie gained one yard, and then Tony Faulkenstein elected to try a field goal. It fell short and big George Harrison, Commando tailback, ran it back 42 yards to tne 42-yard line. The rest of the play was in midfield with the two giant clubs unable to go any place. Chris Brady, whe was iajurod early In the game, ran the ball over the goal line but the plav was railed hark because the offi-rials ruled he had picked up an inrompteted pass rather than a grounded lateral and a free hull.

The entire second half was played up and down between the 20-yard stripes with neither team able to gain any advantage. The locals might have faired better if they had possessed someone able to handle Walthall's passes and had the line been able to handle Bob Kricger, Commando fullback. The former Philadelphia pro alar was a giant on defense, stopping almost every play. 5000 Fans On Hand Camp Beale may have lost the services of Brady for several weeks and possibly the season. He hurt his trick knee and waa all through for the evening.

Walthall, Detervilie and Faulkenstein handled the offense for Beale, and Bill Neuner, James D. Hill, James Montgomery and Adrian Thomas played good bad in the line on defense. An apparent victory became a bitter, 4 to 3 defeat In 12 innings yesterday when Emil (Dutch) Leonard blew a 3 to 0 lead after holding the Athletica scoreless for seven innings. The Nationals countered with a 4 to 3 victory on Rookie Marino Pieretti8 aix-hit pitching. Tigers Shut Out Had Washington won twice, the team would have been only two percentage points behind Detroit. Now they are a full game down. At Detroit, the Tigera got only two hits in a 5 to 0 whitewashing by Nelson Potter.

The Brotkqis knocked out starter Paul (Dizzy) Trout with four runa in the first three innings. The Yankees spoiled Dave Ferriss day" at Boston, beating the rookie, 2 to 1, in five inninga in hia bid for victory 22 before fans who had given him an automobile. The Red Sox won an opener, 6 to 5, in 14 inninga. Bob Feller pitched his fifth victory since returning to the Indians, an 8 to 2, four-hit decision over the White Sox at Cleveland. The National league flag chaae remained unchanged as both Chicago and St.

Louis won. The Cubs protected their game and a half advantage by trimming the Pitta-burgh Pirate 7-3 In the opener of a scheduled twin-bill. The second game was washed out by a thundershower. The Cards continued to hound the Cubs by battering four Cincinnati hurlers for 12 hits including a home run by Whity Kurowski, to whip the Reds 9-6. BY WALT LITTLE Sport Editor THOSE WHO PREDICTED there would be a boom In sport definitely used the wrong word when they put would In the statement.

The word should be changed to read because after this past week-end we are certain there is a boom in sports. It is 1-ready here. Saturday afternoon at Berkeley's Memorial stadium instead of an expected 50.000, more than 70,000 persons poured into the huge oval to witness the St. Mary's College and University of California grid contest. Although many of them came to see if it was true what has been said about Herman Wedemeyer and Spike Cordeiro and how successful Buck Shaw is gooig to be at California, there were thousands who came to aee a sports content They definitely wanted to see a football game, and it didn't make much difference who they saw play.

They saw a football game and they saw that Wedemeyer and Cordeiro are all that has been written about them, and maybe then some. Both were magnificent and thev just outfought and outclassed the Golden Bears. They gave St. Marys its first victory over Buck" Shaw since he became a head coach. California, although it lost Saturday, will be a good team before too many more Saturday's go by.

Shaw has installed a new offensive system and as soon as the boys learn to operate it correctly they will do all right. SATIKDIY MIGHT at Knight Field, more tlma SIMM) local fans turned out to see Camp Beale' grid machine battle the Stockton Commandos. The local contest was not the spectacular affair as that seen in the other cities because two large teams, featuring crashing tactics, don't vem to get too far against each other. Beale might have done much bitter had they possessed someone able to handle the passes of Jim Walthall, former West Virginia star, and had been able to keep a drive going long enough without fumbling. Winning without a playoff game or series with Tigers was an extremely distant possibility. The Senators, who muffed a golden chance yesterday by splitting their last two games of the season with the tail-end Athletics at Philadelphia while Detroit was being shutout by St. Louis, can't win unless the Tigers lose all of their four remaining games.

They will tie the Tigers if Detroit loses three and are out of the picture if the Ben-gals win two or more. "They've taken the pennant away from ua on a technicality, and I'm protesting to Will Har-ridge, league president, Griffith told a reporter.

He referred to an umpire's decision that Buddy Lewis, Washington outfielder, dropped a fly bad in the eighth inning whir. Philadelphia made three runs and tied the acore. On that play, Mayo Smith of the Athletics sent a fly to right which Lewla apparently caught for the first out. But Lewis dropped the wet ball as he started to return It to the Infield. Umpire Eddie Rommel ruled Smith safe, Manager Osaie Bluege objected ao strenuously that Bluege was banished from the game.

The Athletics took advantage of that break to score three unearned runs and send the contest into extra innlrgs for their 4-3 victory. Prep Football Gets Started Conch Glen Potter and Art Swensea of Marysville and Yuba City high schools respectively have been awaiting today's arrival and the arrival of football aspirants. This afternoon the majority of those who hope to play on the school teams will report for practice. Potter won't know just how his team will stack up until after the turnout this afternoon.

Swensen has been practicing for a week, but many of the players havent reported, waiting until the opening of school. Both schools opea their schedules la three weeks, so Potter and Swensen are expected to get started immediately toward building representative squads. Yuba City has several veterans coming back and under their new coach is expected to have a good team. The Honker eleven Is scheduled to use the formation If the players provs they can handle the tricky and effective formation. Coast Playoff To Open Tomorrow BY ASSOCIATED PRESS The Pacific Coast league slid past the finish wire Sunday in an anH-rlimartical finale that saw Portland, Seattle, Sacramento and San Francisco wind up in that order for the governors' cup playoff series which opens tomorrow.

Playoff semi-finals will get underway at Portland tomorrow night with the champion Beavers entertaining the Seattle Rainier. Single games will be played there Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with the aerlea being resumed in Seattle Saturday unless one of the clubs wins all three to Portland, In that event there will be no games until Sunday afternoon. San Francisco will open the other semi-final bracket Wednes-day night with three tilts at Sacramento and continue without a break at the Seals stadium until one of the teams has won the necessary four. Yesterdays results had a bearing on only one position third but the Seals blew their chance to overtake Sacramento by bowing twice to the Los Angeles Angels 5-4 and 7-4. A victory In either engagement would have moved the O'Doulmen ahead of the Scions who lost a pair to Portland 4-3 and 3-2.

In the other season windupa Seattle split with the San Diego Padre 1-4 and 2-0, while the Oakland Acorna were dividing with the Hollywood Stars 8-9 in 12 innings and 4-2.
