J V--2- FRANK AND ERNEST by Bob Thaves QUESTION: What is the history of algebra? # # * ANSWER: Algebra, like geometry, originated in the Ancient World. It is a branch of mathematics in which numbers are represented by letters and it is used to express the relation of unknown to known quantities. In modern times, algebra is used in most forms of math, e.g. geometry, trigonometry and calculus. It is important in the sciences of physics and astronomy and engineers and statisticians rely on algebra for their calculations. Algebra, in a rudimentary, form, was known as early as 1800 B.C. Reference to algebra was found in Egyptian writings at this early date. The Babylonians, Persians and Chinese were familiar with algebra in early times. The word algebra was introduced by Alkarismi, an Arab teacher of mathematics in the ^OO's A.D. It is a combination of Arabic words meaning restoration and reduction, or solving an equation. Omar Khayyam wrote a book on algebra, recording some important developments used today. There was little progress in algebra during the Middle Ages, but since the 1500s, there has been great development on the practical aspects. 4-20 (Ann Sullivan of Sacramento, California, wins a prize for this question.
