question and ponder criminal culpability In the case of a 93-year-old woman who was cut bruised and scraped late Sunday night while a patient at Countryside Convalescent Home but "cannot find at this time any indication of a criminal nature" police Sgt Mike Roy said In fact Roy said it appears Elizabeth Lewis may have inflicted some of the injuries on herself as she thrashed about resisting an orderly who was attempting to feed her a liquid dietary supplement Roy said investigators have learned that Mrs Lewis also struggled against ambulance attendants called to transport her to Mercy General Hospital One of the key factors in the case is that Mrs Lewis a patient for three years at the home at 6821 24th St has skin that tears very easily according to the testimony of a nurse Mrs Lewis described as a tiny woman who cannot travel from bed to wheelchair without assistance is in stable condition at the hospital her grandson Randy Staats has said A facial cut was stitched Her arm and neck were cut and bruises were on her chest Staats said Countryside administrator Charles Campbell refused to comment Wednesday According to police reports and comments from authorities Mrs Lewis WM in bed about 11 pm Sunday when Countryside orderly Christopher Gallegos 24 entered the room to feed her the nutrient that looks like a milkshake and typically is given to those who have not eaten well Police reports disclose that Gallegos told the nurse on duty that when he tried to feed Mrs Lewis she pushed the can away As he tried to grab it his wristwatch struck her in the mouth The wound bled heavily and Gallegos tried to daub it clean but could not ho told police and nurse Mary Jenkins Ms Jenkins said she could not stop the bleeding either She said that when she entered the room she saw the cut on the mouth and that Mrs Lewis' skin was split on the neck and left arm "The skin was not gaping open but only split with some slight oozing of blood" Nurse Jenkins told police "Mrs Lewis' skin is very tender and splits very easily There have been several past instances when she was being handled that Mrs Lewis' skin split" she recalled for police However she said "It was never this bad" The nurse said she feels ambulance attendants may have washed Mrs Lewis' skin "too vigourously causing Delia Continued From Page BI thorities in the investigation of the Robert Lewis and attorney of record" she said "I've been on the hook for two years and I want out I can't organize the next two years of my life waiting for some sort of an answer on appeal" O'Mara said he would file a notice the skin to break open completely" according to police reports She added she does not feel Gallegos Improperly conducted himself "Gallegos was always gentle with the pa tients" police quote Ms Jenkins Countyside was fined $5000 Tues' day by the state Health Services Department for threatening the health and safety of Mrs Lewis Department spokesman Pete Weisser said Wednesday the fine 'does not imply criminal misconduct San Juan Continued From Page Bi member John Browhing said he supported Doerr's letter Watkins and Ms Carson agreed with Franks Watkins said several people have told him the board has to make its own decision on a new superintendent and Ms Carson noted that not hiring a consultant would save the district money Large school districts —San Juan is the seventh largest in the state — generally use advisers to select a superintendent according to Herb Salinger executive secretary of the California School Boards Association He estimated that a consultant would cost a district like San Juan about $1000 to $1500 with up to an additional $8500 for the entire recruitment and screening process including meeting with various community groups Salinger earlier this year had recommended that the board hire a consultant Drive For Classrooms REDDING — Two developers opposed to building permit fees on temporary classrooms are spearheading a drive to get the rooms donated in a district they say has inadequate facilities Kurt Reich! and Frank Coughlin say they have commitments of enough donations of money labor and materials to build the structures just two weeks after Coughlin conceived the idea The men say they have no financial interest in the small Buckeye School District in north Redding Coughlin got the idea two weeks ago when the school district asked the Redding City Council to make a legal finding that the district was overcrowded Superintendent Bob Hufford says the district's two schools have a capacity of 504 students but said more than 600 are enrolled of intention to appeal this week but he said there is no way of knowing how long the appeal will take "In the ordinary case it woaldn't take very long because it's a relatively narrow issue" O'Mara said "But in this case you're talking about a substantial number of pages al transcript and substantial briefs by both parties" Since it is The People appealing the pretrial ruling O'Mara said the defendants have a right to be released on their own recognizance and at least one of the four accused (Abe Hernandez) will be freed shortly after Tuesday's court date which was to have been the start of the trial Two of the other defendants Sosa and Delia will remain in custody Roofer Sentenced For Murder Benjamin Bailey of Sacramento waS sentenced Wednesday to a 15- year to life
