The Herald Sports Friday, April 28,1978 Possible Jasper-Memorial clash draws statewide attention By JERRY BIRGE Herald Sports Editor If the prevails, the number 2 and number 3 rated high school baseball teams will be playing in the of the Saturday night at Recreation Field in Jasper. The number 2-rated Evansville Memorial Tigers and the number 3-rated Jasper Wildcats, both undefeated, are in the classy four- team field that makes up the annual Jasper Baseball Tourney Saturday. With two of the top three teams in the state in the field, the tourney has been attracting statewide attention this week. Also attracting attention is the weekend weather forecast which calls for rain, starting Saturday evening. The tournament is slated to begin at 10:30 Saturday morning with the host Wildcats playing Clarksville Providence in the opener.

Memorial takes on Terre Haute North at 1 p.m. The first round loses clash at 3:30 in the consolation game. The winners meet at 7 in the championship. Jasper comes into the tourney with a 12-0 record overall, a 7-0 slate in the SIAC. The Wildcats beat Boonville, 11-3, Thursday night for their 12th win.

Memorial is 9-0 for the year and 7-0 in the conference. Before the tournament, however, the Tigers play city foe Bosse tonight at Bosse Field. Providence, first foe Saturday, is only 4-5 for the year, but the Pioneers showed they could play Wednesday when they beat Prep baseball Danny Fuhs powers Cats Senior outfielder Danny Fuhs blasted two home runs one of them a grand slam, a single and drove in 7 runs Thursday evening to power the the No. 3 rated Jasper Wildcats to an 11-3 SIAC high school baseball win over Boonville at Recreation Field. It was the 12th straight win for the unbeaten Wildcats, their seventh straight conference win without a loss.

Fuhs started his offensive attack in the fourth inning with a 2-run homer as the Wildcats grabbed a 71 lead at that point. Fuhs put the game on ice in the fifth inning with his grand slam. The two home runs give Fuhs a total of 3 for the year. In addition Fuhs had a single, his three hits leading an 11-hit attack for Jasper. Jerry Alles chipped in with 2 singles, Mark Kunkel, Ted Seger and John Schuetter all doubled.

Schuetter teamed up with Jeff Schneider to hold Boonville to 7 hits. Schuetter pitched the first four innings, Schneider the last three. The Wildcats will carry their 12-0 credentials into their own tournament Saturday when they play Clarksville Providence at 10:30 a.m. in the opener. No.

2 rated Evansville Memorial takes on Terre Haute North at 1 p.m. Barrett throws 1 -hitter Pike Central righthander Tim Barrett pitched a 1-hit shutout Thursday as the Chargers blanked Southridge, 5-0, in high school baseball action at Pike Central. Barrett, in charge from start to finish, struck out 6 and walked 4. He allowed only an infield single to the Keith Becher in the second inning. Mike Eck hit a solo homer to lead a 6-hit attack for the Chargers.

Clint Allen had a triple and single while John Bellamy had a 2-run double. The victory gives Pike Central a 4-2 record overall, a 1-1 mark in the Pocket Athletic Conference. The Chargers will play again today at Washington Catholic. Southridge, 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the PAC, will play again Tuesday at South Spencer. Rangers defeat Titans Greg RBI double broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning and sparked the Forest Park Rangers to a 6-4 prep baseball win over Gibson Southern Thursday at Ferdinand.

With the score tied at 4-4 going into the bottom of the sixth, Steve Uebelhor led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Rocky Emmert. Larry Nord walked and Greg Uebelhor followed with his RBI double. Nord then scored an insurance run on a throwing error by the Gibson Southern catcher. Nord and Stu Wendholt combined to pitch a 5-hitter for the Rangers, Nord working the first four innings. The Rangers touched two Titan pitches for 6 hits, including 2 singles by Scott Uebelhor and the double by Greg Uebelhor.

Brad Hollis and George Robinson each had 2 singles for Gibson. The victory gives Forest Park a 4-5 record for the year. They will play again Saturday morning at 10 a.m. when they face Pike Central in the opening game of the Forest Park Tourney at Ferdinand. Bloomfield tops Jeeps Bloomfield pounded out 8 hits and took advantage of 5 Dubois errors Thursday as the Cardinals dealt the Jeeps their first loss of the season, 12-1, at Dubois.

The game was called after 6 innings because of the 10-run rule. Bloomfield built up a 4-1 lead over the first three innings and then wrapped things up with 4-run uprisings in the fourth and sixth innings. Doug MjfcHer pitched a 1-hitter for Bloomfield, allowing only a leadoff triple by Greg Meyer in the bottom of the first inning. Meyer later scored on a wild pitch to cost Miller the shutout. Miller struck out 7 and walked only one.

Cardinal catcher Mike Helms blasted a 3-run homer in the second inning and also had a single to lead the hitting. Bob Warnick had 2 doubles. The win was the second in as many starts for Bloomfield. Dubois is now 3-1. The Jeeps will play again Saturday in their own tournament, facing Washington Catholic at lp.m.

Jasper tourney has always been a very good, competitive Providence coach Bob Fields said today, doubt Jasper and Memorial would be the natural for the final game based on their records and ratings, but I think Terre Haute North and us will come up there with ideas of getting into the final game ourselves. not as strong as been in the last couple of years due to our youth and inexperience, but we did get that big win Wednesday over Fields indicated that he will start either Kevin Burke or Mike Huff, both lefthanders, against Jasper in the tourney opener. Jasper coach Ray Howard stated today that he will counter with either righthander Steve Brosmer or southpaw Jeff Schneider. Howard admits he would like to see a Jasper-Memorial showdown Saturday night, but he warns, have to play the games one at a time.

Providence has always been strong in Southeastern Indiana. They play a good schedule against teams like Jeffersonville, New Albany and schools from Louisville. Jasper golfers beat two foes from Evansville Bob Schneider and Bill Nonte each carded 4-over-par 76s Thursday to share medalist honors and lead the Jasper Wildcats to victory in a high school golf triangular at the Jasper Municipal Golf Course.

All four Wildcats broke 80 as Jasper totaled 310 strokes to 324 or Evansville Mater Dei and 364 for Evansville Harrison. Schneider and Nonte got plenty of support from Mike Lannon and Ron Schitter, who each had a 79. The double win gives Jasper a 143 record for the year. They will play again Monday when they host Princeton at the Jasper Muni course. Jasper-Memorial showdown, but right now he is concerned with his city league game with Bosse tonight and his first round test with Terre Haute North Saturday.

North is 7-2 for the year, 2-0 in the SIAC. Forest Park will see action again Saturday in the North Harrison Relays at Ramsey. Patriots defeat Chargers The Heritage Hills Patriots swept 10 of the 15 events Thursday to defeat the Pike Central Chargers, 79-48, in high school track action at Lincoln City. Eight different Pats notched individual wins.

Blue ribbon winners for the Pats were Mark Kress (high hurdles), Carey Carlisle (mile), Jim Neuman (100), Danny Mercker (440), Duane Detzer (880), Rod Hoffman (220), Bill Delashmutt (low hurdles) and David Underhill (discus). Hoffman and Mercker combined with Terry Brahm and Greg Greulich to win the mile relay. Hoffman, Neuman, Mike Kline and Mike Spurlock won the 880 relay. Pike Phil Sharp won the 2-mile run, Tracy Wells won the shot put, Jeff Rhoderick prevailed in the long jump, Jeff Young in the high jump and Mike Garland in the pole vault. Heritage Hills will run again Monday at home against South Spencer and Cannelton.

Pike Central will host the Pike Central Relays Saturday. Girls' track Jasper wins triangular Karen Bauer won three blue ribbons and one red ribbon Thursday as the Jasper Wildcats outran the Castle Knights and Tell City Markswomen in a track and field triangular meet at Paradise. Jasper finished with 68 points to 43 for host Castle and 23 for Tell City. Bauer won the 440, 220 and high jump and finished second in the 100 to Mary Joe Kopatich. Jasper won 8 of the 13 events.

Other individual first place finishers for the Wildcats were Dana Knies (hurdles), Carol Seng (mile), Rita Schwenk (880) and Mem Berg (softball throw). Knies, Berg, Donna Weidenbenner and Mary Roelle won the 880 relay for the Catsl. time of 11.8 over the hurdles set a new school record, a record held since 1974 by Brenda Schmitt. toss of 212-feet, 6- inches in the softball throw broke her own school record of 212-4, set last year. triumph Thursday marked the first time in six years that the Wildcats had beaten Castle in either a dual or triangular meet.

The Jasper girls will run again Saturday in the Bosse Invitational at Evansville. Nate Scherry blanks Charger jayvees, 4-0 Righthander Nate Scherry pitched a 3-hit shutout Thursday as Southridge downed Pike Central, 40, in a junior varsity baseball game at Pike Central. The Little Raiders did all of their scoring in the first inning on two singles, three walks and a balk. loss evens the Pike Central record at 1-1. The Charger reserves will play again Tuesday at home against Gibson Southern.
