Anyway the Niners will open championship play a week from Monday night against the Steelers in Pittsburgh after an awesome preseason campaign That they would up 1-5 all that frightening but the manner in which they improved in the loss column is noteworthy to say the least After registering their only win over the Rams not only did Ken mercenaries lose three straight but in those 12 quarters they failed to score a single TD Only a field goal against Houston a dozen quarters back ruined an otherwise perfect three-game display of offensive ineptness Chants of "We want Clark! We want Clark came loud and clear from the handful of patrons in the stands as the finish neared The attendance was announced as 36441 a figure considered suspect by some pressbox sages The "We want Clark!" referred of course to Monte Clark the popular coach who kept his money but lost his job when new ownership moved in last February Well Red not worrying about that The new Bronco coach is happy with a 5-1 exhibition mark which neither he nor his charges plan to throw out of a window The Broncos got their first TD late See Page C4 Col 1 Bears Batter Vols 27 to 1 7 KNOXVILLE Tenn (AP) Fullback Paul Jones ran for 128 yards and quarterback Charlie Young scored two touchdowns to lead California to a 27-17 victory over fumble-plagued Tennessee Saturday night Taking advantage of four Tennessee fumbles leading to two touchdowns and a field goal California kept the Volunteers in their own territory most of the game The loss was a dim opening in the rebuilding of football program under Johnny Majors who guided the University of Pittsburgh to the national championship last season Jones scored no points for California but was responsible for keeping the Bears deep in the territory most of the game Jim Breech booted field goals of 42 and 37 yards for Califor iia but his five misses were responsible for keeping Tennessee out if scoring position most of the game Young scored two of touchdowns on one-yard runs and connected on a 58-yard pass to flanker Floyd Eddings scores came on an 80-yard run by quarterback Jimmy Streater a four-yard drive by tailback Kelsey Finch and a 23-yard field goal by Jim Gaylor Buffs Hold Off Stanford Surge BOULDER Colo (AP) Fullback James Mayberry scored twice and Colorado held off a fourth-quarter Stanford rally to post a 27-21 victory Saturday in the college football opener for both teams Linebacker Brian end-zone interception and midddleguard Laval fumble recovery stopped Stanford drives Two fourth-period touchdown passes by highly regarded quarterback Guy Benjamin kept the Cardinals in contention until the closing minutes of the contest On the second play of the final quarter Benjamin tossed an 11-yard scoring pass to split end Bill Ketlar that cut the Colorado lead to 20-14 After a Colorado fumble Stanford marched from its own 29-yard line to the Colorado 10 but hurried pass into the end zone was tipped by linebacker Tom Perry into the hands of Cabral Colorado ranked 12th then drove the length of the field for second score of the afternoon His 17-yard jaunt put Colorado ahead 27-14 with 4:20 left in the game However Stanford struck back quickly Benjamin tossed a short pass to halfback Darrin Nelson and the speedy freshman dashed along the sideline for a 56-yard scoring play that pulled the Cardinals within 27-21 with 3 39 remaining The Buffaloes able to make a first down on their next possession and punted With less than two minutes to play on a fourth-and-two situation Nelson was hit at the line and fumbled and Short recovered at the Stanford 36 Colorado then ran out the clock For Statistics See Page C4 Saturday's Games New York 7 Chicago 2 Los Angeles 7 Cincinnati 4 Montreal 4 Pittsburgh 2 The subject is quarterbacks talking Join the conversation By DAVE BRADY The Washington Post WASHINGTON Almost overlooked in the media blitz over Tony Dorsett is the fact the Dallas Cowboys won the National Conference Eastern Division last year without him Coach Tom Landry keeps saying i i i the "more thing the Cowboys are carrying over is a defense that was more efficient than it has been in several years Retiring Lee Roy Jordan must be replaced at middle linebacker but there are so many good linebackers that Randy White has been moved to defensive tackle The Cowboys and Redskins (44 each) The prospects are for more of the same in the American Eastern Division because the Patriots and Colts have the easiest and next to-easiest schedules respectively on the basis of how their 1977 opponents played last year Off some spurts he had as a rookie rush off on him and that if we did we were going to win the game He might say go keep them out It was all very laconic Just straightforward business go do it Here we Earl Morrall had quarterbacked for so many teams that he got his plays mixed up He would come into the huddle and say Okay see relax under control out left flank right split No out right flank left? uh Tom Matte who knew the offense inside out would say left flank right 36 on and break the huddle say it different were the other I ask "Dan Pastorini with the Oilers was completely Curry says frantic we gotta score! Now git hereiJeez He was very young when I was playing with him Just about every play somebody's just knocked his head off be prostrate there and reach down and help drag him off be cussing: guys block my Aunt Suzy He really went through hell He set a couple of NFL records for having been sacked the most times It was driving him crazy Starr was businesslike like Unitas though he showed a lot more emotion than John The common thread of the great ones of course was that you had complete confidence in them that the guy knew which plays to call and that if you executed them properly it would work "If you had to sit there and wonder: Now even if we do this and we do it just right it still might not be the See Page C7 Col 1 American Conference trailed only Minnesota and Los Angeles in sacks (45) That makes offense the chief concern particularly since the Cowboys scored fewer points 296 than in any other season since 1964 Roger Stau-bach did not miss a game after his throwing hand was broken In the sev-SeePageC8 Col 4 the way to the playoffs for the second straight season under coach Ted Marchibroda The 417 points topped by 41 the output of New England another high-gear traveler and were 66 more than the Los Angeles Rams leaders of the National Conference See Page C8 Col 1 WILLIAM KYNE Smolich (CURRY) come in and there was something about being in a huddle with him with a minute and forty-five seconds left and you needed a touchdown and you were back on your own twenty-yard line look over at the famous crooked nose with the scar down it He sort of blinked his eyes behind the bar on his helmet and know you were going to get a touchdown And we would It was all so matter of fact with him was very seldom a pep talk He might say to Jimmy Orr or Roy Jefferson ya got? Can you get him on an up? Can you beat him on an out? Is he playing you inside? Okay try it this stick his head in the huddle and call the play boom He assumed that we were going to keep the pass ONLY NATURAL that people want to know where their money went particularly when the amount totals $10270729 which is what State Fair goers bet in 14 days at Cal Expo No two ways about it it is indeed biggest game of the year and a pretty fair bundle averaging $733624 per day a State Fair record bettering by 258 per cent last $715191 SOME BETTORS perhaps you may believe that nobody got a nickel back That cashier windows simply did not exist not true The report by William Kyne mutuel department manager to Baron Reed Cal Expo majordomo indicates that Where Did All The $10 270 729 Go? WASHINGTON Unfortunately for the Washington Redskins whose close-to-the-vest style of play has its critics up the road the Baltimore Colts have firepower to bum in entertaining their fans Bert Jones and Lydell Mitchell produced a lot of offense last year on The track and horsemen divide it hippily Thus each collected $5665859 or 55 per cent without a whimper from those who pushed the money through the windows SO where the money went You should be complimented for playing a role slight as it may seem because every little bit helps It should be mentioned also that Kyne's report to Reed contains considerable other information' involving the proclivities AS USUAL THE mezzanine handled the most action 4740 per cent or $4868207 Then came the main line ground level with 4084 per cent while the Turf Club took care of the rest 1176 The answer's easy thanks to efficiency FIRST OF ALL Cal commission as the track was 1025 per cent equalling $105274972 while the State of California picked up $66759740 or 650 per cent Actually since Cal Expo and the state are one and the same like filling two pockets on the same pair of trousers Now only 1675 per cent How about the remaining 110? THE breakage those odd cents not paid to winning pari-mutuel bettors because they exceed payoff figures calculated at multiples of 5 or 10 Obviously breakage belongs to the bettors their dough Nobody Alas they never see it of the $10270279 $843706470 was returned to the public SIMPLE MATH shows that to be 8215 per cent The figures are accurate Kyne makes no mistakes when it comes to dollar signs and percentages The white-haired nephew of Bill Kyne founder of Bay Meadows broke into the mutuel business in 1926 at Juarez Mexico When California was introduced to pari-mutuel wagering Will found his way to old Tanforan in and gradually rose to a high supervisorial rank including his present State Fair status since SO YOU CAN trust report down to the last decimal But what happened to the other 1785 per cent after the public got back 8215? The handle by pools affords an interesting study THE WIN POOL dominated to the tune of 4063 per cent or $4173181 well ahead of the exacta races which accounted for 2570 per cent mighty high considering there were only four exacta events one for $2 and three for $5 As for the rest the place pool handled 1723 per cent show 962 and daily double 682 NOT ONLY WAS the betting up so were the crowds Kyne pointed out that 125692 attended the races this year compared to 124236 in '76 The average hit 8978 with the per capital betting listed at $8171 up from last $8059 AN OLD saying See Page C4 6)11 Marco Smolich Sports Editor i By 7.
