Coaches Downplay Downpour Meetings Start Today I Secret Site To Discuss Bay Area Baseball Future 4 The San Francisco Giants who prospered when they had this area to themselves before the came in 1968 and would benefit from being sole occupants again Bob Lurie is half owner but full operating head of the team 5 The City of San Francisco as landlord of the Giants in Candlestick Park which would have to approve any changes in the Giants' lease that would allow them to play some games in Oakland if that became a negotiating point 6 The commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhn who is on record against the maintenance of two teams here and carries responsibility for helping to make orderly any changes in the baseball map He is familiar with the people and circumstances involved here 7 The American League which has a moneydraining situation in Oakland and would like to see it ended by a move to Denver 8 The National League whose weak spot is San Francisco as long as there are two teams here It is likely therefore that the meeting will include at least Finley Nahas Kuhn Lurie and a representative of San Francisco The political aspect is especially tangled because San Francisco is both a city and a county and has an independent recreational authority that administers Candlestick Park Any final arrangement will have to meet the "how do we look" musings of two elected mayors two sets of elected county supervisors and a host of public administrators Another possible entanglement was a report that the Giants might be sold to a New York group that would move the team to Washington On Tuesday however Lurie discounted the report saying ne was determined to keep the team in San Francisco Nothing decisive is likely to come from today's first session There will have to be several meetings probably spread over a few weeks At the moment all couit action has been dropped When Finley announced that he had agreed to sell the team to Marvin Davis of Denver Coliseum attorneys got a federal court order prohibiting any further discussion But Finley's lease does not forbid him to move or sell if he can get prior approval from the Coliseum It was hard to see how he could negotiate such approval while forbidden to discuss it so the restraining order was withdrawn The general outlines of a possible settlement are clear enough: There are 10 years to go on the 20-year Oakland lease so basing a financial settlement on past performance should not be impossible to calculate The baseball people would like to have part of that amount taken care of by having the Giants play 20 or 30 of their 81 home games in Oakland paying rent with Finley making up the rest That would require getting permission from San Francisco authorities to take the appropriate number of games out of Candlestick Park With or without Giant games in Oakland the realistic issue for the Coliseum is to wind up with a maximum settlement to satisfy its obligations to the East Bay population Finley cannot be forced to operate a money-losing business and there is no serious local buyer for the team on the horizon The only chance of keeping the team and its benefits to the community" would come if such a purchaser appeared That in turn would probably drive the Giants elsewhere The baseball people unusually unified on this issue will try to convince both sets of city officials that their real alternatives are one-team or none that if they find a way to make it possible for one team to operate alone both may go Damage suits would be filed if that happened By LEONARD KOPPETT NY Times News Service OAKLAND Negotiations to pry Charley out of their Oakland lease so that they can be sold and moved to Denver will begin today in a meeting of many interested parties at an undisclosed location (not in Oakland) and an announced time Reducing major league baseball in the Bay area from two teams to one may not be as complex as a peace settlement in the Middle East but the discussions are being conducted with far more secrecy The reason is that many interlocking interests are involved with many local political positions to be protected A simple meeting between Finley and his Oakland Coliseum landlord originally scheduled for Thursday was called off and a larger session somewhere on the North American continent has been arranged for today or Saturday "Our main goal remains the same to keep the A's in Oakland" said Bill Cunningham general manager of the Coliseum complex we look upon these discussions as exploring the whole baseball situation in this area Obviously there are many interested parties but I go into anymore detail The interested parties however are easily identifiable 1 Finley and the 2 The Coliseum a nonprofit corporation headed by Robert Nahas as president 3 The City of Oakland and Alameda County which jointly financed construction of the complex (an outdoor stadium seating 55000 for football and an indoor arena holding 13000 for basketball) and splits all revenues generated by Coliseum Inc MELBOURNE Australia (AP) Vitas Gerulaitis of the United States and John Lloyd of Britain advanced to the finals of the $200000 Australian Open today by beating their Australian opponents in the semifinals Gerulaitis in devasting form defeated John Alexander 6-1 6-2 6-4 in just 80 minutes while the 23-year-old Lloyd thrashed a nervous Bob Gilti-nan 6-4 6-2 6-0 before a capacity crowd of 12000 at center court After his blitz of Alexander the blond New Yorker said he was worried in the third set when Alexander had a break point against him in the eighth game played so well in the first two sets that I did not think I could keep the pace up for the rest of the match" he said Two simple errors by the tall Australian let Gerulaitis off the hook in the third set and the American quickly broke back in the ninth ga me before serving out the match Gerulaitis who will probably never have an easier run through to the final of a Grand Slam tournament returned powerful serve with spectacular accuracy and was very quick around the court Alexander said after the match: "I have no excuses to offer Vitas played magnificent tennis from the very first game Every good shot I hit did not look so good when it came roaring back at me" Gerulaitis was so quick around the court that he was able to cut off Alexander's delicate chip shots and lobs before they landed and smash them away for winners Lloyd said still think my serve is a bit erratic and against Vitas that is fatal I think I can get it going well enough to trouble him tomorrow "I was very happy with my game today but felt that Bob is a much better player than he showed I think he was satisfied that he had gotten so far and did not have that keen edge necessary to win" said the 23-year-old Lloyd The 28-year-old Giltinan said he was very disappointed with his game but that he feit like "a out on the court In the singles quarterfinals Australian Evonne Goolagong continued her great winning form with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Judy Dalton of Australia while Kerry Reid of Australia defeated Kathy Harter of theUS6-1 7-5 True Integration Funseth Eyes 65-66 Today To Win Title UCD Hosts Gage Pair PASADENA (UPI) As rain fell in Southern California for the fifth straight day Rose Bowl coaches Bo Schembechler of Michigan and Don James of Washington Thursday downplayed the possibility of inclement weather in Pasadena classic Neither coach would venture an opinion when asked if a rainy Rose Bowl game would favor one team or another hard to say" said Schembechler really don't know Whoever holds onto the football will have the best chance of winning sure of that But I just predict really have any strong feelings one way or the other" remarked James The coaches appeared together at a news conference at the Tournament House in Pasadena and answered questions from reporters for about 45 minutes A Rose Bowl official informed Schembechler and James that in the past 100 years it had rained eight times on Jan 1 and 30 times on Jan 2 The weatherman said there was a chance of showers Monday from a new storm moving down the coast from the Pacific Northwest The liquid sunshine continued to fall on usually sunny Southern California and that is worrying Rose Bowl officials The last time it rained in the Rose Bowl was during the 1955 game when Ohio State beat Southern California 20-7 James and the Huskies come from the Pacific Northwest But the Washington coach expressed displeasure about the inconvenience of having to practice on a rain-soaked Orange Coast College field at Costa Mesa James said "we could get out of the rice paddies for awhile and get onto a little drier field to practice on But we both have the same problems I guess and both play on the same field" Added the Michigan coach not accustomed to wet weather on natural turf We are accustomed to wet weather on artificial turf and a difference There any question about it can recall the 1972 Rose Bowl game (won by Stanford over the Wolverines 13-12) where we had similar weather conditions We were very much concerned about the footing As it turned out it didn't rain the day of the game think we overplayed the fact that it was wet weather at that time and I don't want to do that this time feel that unless the rain keeps coming down and coming down and coming down the field be in that bad of shape But maybe wrong" Squaw Valley To Host Leg Of Ski Circuit ST LOUIS (AP) The first professional ski racing circuit this winter will offer prize money totaling more than $40000 it was announced Thursday The three-meet competition will begin March 18-19 at Waterville NH then move to Squaw Valley Calif April 1-2 and Vail Colo April 8-9 Jill Wing producer of the circuit said the race format will consist of two days of competition in both giant slalom and slalom with each race consisting of confrontations between two competitors By BOB DUNNING Bee Correspondent DAVIS In what is now an experiment but may soon become a trend both the University of California Davis and basketball teams will compete on the floor of Rec Hall tonight But not against each other and not at the same time The women who have played all their games so far in Hickey Gym where the men used to play will make their first Rec Hall appearance at 5:50 pm against Cal And if Rec Hall is as kindly to them as it has been to the men an Aggie victory appears in order The men will take the floor at their usual 8:05 pm going against Chaminade a small Catholic school from Honolulu The Aggies are 7-3 with seven straight wins on their home floor following an opening game loss to UOP Two other Aggie losses came on the road Weber State and 19th ranked Nebraska Chaminade which is not a new flavor of Hawaiian Punch brings a 6-2 record into the game including a 95-92 win Tuesday night at Far Western Conference representative Hayward State Aggie coach Bob Hamilton who gave his troops a week off for Christmas and call them back for practice sessions before Tuesday saw the game at Hayward and rates Chaminade on a par with other FWC schools use a whole lot of people so I know how well hold up ovpr a whole season said "But I think they could compete Hamilton was especially impressed with Will Pounds a 6-7 260-pound center who averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds a game last year for Chaminade Noted the Aggie coach: big and strong and fast and he takes up the whole key just standing The coach added that Pounds is being pursued by scouts from both professional football and basketbalL For the first time in recent history the Aggies have five players including three former Sacramento prep stars averaging in double figures Audwin Thomas and Ron Migliori lead the team with 173 and 143 point a game averages respectively followed by Steve Verigin of Del Campo (111) Mike Lien of Jesuit (110) and Cornell Beatty of Burbank and Cosumnes Charlie Finley Why will it be so easy? For the simple fact Denver is a half-team Certainly one of the best halfteams but Incomplete nonetheless In all fairness to the Broncos the way they play defense very well may be unparalleled in the league right now On defense Denver is certainly a man-to-man matchup of the current Raiders If all the Raiders were healthy on defense Oakland might win by a nose Then again IF it rain Monday the Rams probably would have beaten Minnesota Denver did not get here without something on offense but what it has on offense can not be compared to what Baltimore has or Pittsburgh or Cincinnati or even the New York Jets for that matter The Jets may not have much but they have three wide receivers who can run down any fly-hall Denver will need the breaks and more It will need those seven pass interceptions It will need Oakland making mistakes it usually make in big games For those who want to take a microscope to the game it can be easily boiled down to this: If Stabler gets the same pass protection against Denver that he did last week against Baltimore the game will be one-sided It matter what Craig Morton does It matter if Ray Guy kicks with helium Giving Stabler time is the same as giving Rembrandt a full palette Stabler will do a masterful job on the Orange Crush if he has seven seconds to throw as he did a few times last week against the Colts I have not spent much time analyzing Dallas-Minnesota only because I hope by omission that you will forget it and turn on Mary Tyler Moore instead The same can not be said of Oak-land-Denver In typical AFC style it will be exciting It will be imaginative It also will be a sad ending to an otherwise glorious season by the Denver Broncos who are only an offense away from winning the Super Bowl WasbinglonTtRiceS?
