scored the final of Forster is Aggie Cotton No 61 Elll guard ETU touchdown with a 37-yard screen pass from Kurt Aloisio No 63 broke the play open with quarterback Steve Turk The play came late in the block on Aggie defender Jeff Allen No 77 third quarter on a third-and-eight situation In pursuit By JIM JENKINS Executive Sports Editor DAVIS Eastern Illinois' climb to football success came in three stages four if you include the Cinderella Panthers sacking of UC Davis One key ingredient and most obvious in what was a disastrous program only one year ago (I-10) was hiring Darrell Mudra as head coach Another was appointing 3S-year-old Mike Mu 'laity a man without a distinguished sports background as athletic director The third was an insulting 4044 loss to Youngstown State this year Mudra credited as the second winningest coach in Division came to Eastern after a two-year hiatus from the game after he was fired at Florida State The first thing he did when he arrived on campus was to write a letter to Multally and in it he said the young AD shouldn't expect too much in Mudra's first year A 500 season would be respectable 11lultally was told Asked about the letter as he went around the happy Panther locker room congratulating his players for winning the first football playoff in school history Mudra smiled "Oh that Well I'll tell you I thought we had some good players It wasn't so much what I expected to do as it was what I wanted from the school Hell I didn't even have a typewriter when I took over No secretary either We nokitI some facilities" Which is where Multally stylish in a blue suit under an electric hairdo Saturday came in Mullallv former history teacher who passea through Oklahoma but is known more for academic achievement turned a small group of boosters into something he calls the "Century Club" 20x)0 or so Ell: backers who put in a minimum $100 each year in return for use of school facilities in a community of 11000 ''Before Mullally came" said a newsman accompanying the team "they were working with SS000 in donations for athletics "You can see what it is now They used to offer a dozen or so scholarships Now they're giving 35 (Davis can offer none under its conference regulations) but could offer more It's amazing how fast the whole thing turned around in one year" The turnaround was a painful process for Mullally who scrapped three successful EIU sports to help fund football tennis gymnastics and golf The Panthers fourth overall in Division 11 sports over the years also are successful in cross-country basketball and soccer attaining national status most years but as Mu Bally explained "Every time another program wanted to do something there was nothing left for football 1 made some people unhappy I took a lot of heat for dumping those sports I'm still taking heat But after today well Yes you can say the monkey is off my back" The way the Panther players see it the monkey has shifted to the shoulders of Youngstown State second playoff opponent next Saturday "We owe them one" said linebacker Ray Jeske a thorn in Davis side his days achievements including an interception to set up one touchdown and a block to spring Mark Campana for 7-yard TD return in the third period "Youngstown is the team we've wanted to play again all along" added Jeske echoing comments from several teammates "They had us down eight points with a minute or so left (32-4) and had the ball But they kept in their entire first string and used all their timeouts to get another score Somebody said they wanted to get 40 points" "1 don't think my players are going to forget that" said Mudra who has a doctorate in psychology and is nicknamed "Dr Victory' by his club "They really didn't say much to Youngstown after that game but 1 know they're going to remember it" On the subject of Davis Jeske had only praise for Moroski "Just a super athlete We let down a little but he really showed me something when they were down 25 points He has a helluva arm He's every thing we heard He hit the short passes and he beat us deep" Defensive coordinator John leerlinck a San Diego Charger defensive end from 1973 until five knee operations forced him to coaching in 1976 said the Panthers used a three-man rush on Moroski in the first half which ended 14-10 in favor "but we ended up rushing everybody in the second half" Teerlinck said MU had its pride tarnished when the Aggies scored the final touchdown as time ran out in a 21-point Aggie fourth quarter "Peo UCD Player Angry Over Fan Criticism Of Moroski AA DARRELL MUDRA pie will look at the score of this game and say wow But it wasn't close" At the start of the fourth period each Panther player raised four fin gers "It's a symbol for us" explained Teerlinck who along with the offensive coordinator manned earphones on the sidelines and took directions from Mudra seated on a platform above the bleachers with three other assistant coaches "Four fingers means the fourth quarter is our best We've never been beaten in the fourth quarter we've never played plorly then When Davis scored all those touchdowns I cautioned the defense to keep its composure That flanker of theirs (Calvin Ellison) was the fastest man we've faced We really had nobody fast enough to cover him But we've come a long way We have 38 sacks this year and I think we got six or seven more today" Of Mudra's letter Teerlinck said "Oh I think it was a motivation thing I didn't believe for one minute we didn't have a good team In fact when the season started I told the team that if there was any player who didn't think we could win the national championship to get his tail out" About coaching from the stands in an Aggie crowd Mudra said "I usually stay up there the whole game For one the view is a helluva lot better and I believe in letting the offensive and defensive assistants coach their units The fans? Oh they were nice They didn't say too much Campana's TD return was a story in itself He was given mediocre to low marks by the coaching staff for punt returning averaging onlyotwo yards a return this year But the best part of this Cinderella story noted Teerlinck who saw EIU crowds rise from 2000 to 8000 a game is next year All but two defensive starters will be back and the entire offense returns Aat446-411A-4411---01 -Z 7-7 "''cl' i 44 40 Z) 7777a111 IT4O'nt 4 vot 'tt 1-FrIrT777rTI 1I: 4 1 1 'Vit 41914' Alt 'i 4 4 k' 'i'A Wab IA Q'" T- te7- 1 4 01 e1 1 4t: ::7: 4 1 4 4: 'let rii z-: Ni 1i Ji IL ii 611 el i 4 14' il 0 iii 4-' 11 tly-J' 4' 4i tl -)-vi--i: 4s- -74- i- 4 :1 1 r'' pr 4: 1 4:01 :::1141 0 4' ---t 1' ri I 1 il I fr IVII it I 4-14 1 ts I 11 1- 1 II it 1: 4 p) I iti 1 I I Ill 1 i itt At- ik0 4111 4 4 i do LA woo 8:::: "MN t940P4'e ''t''''' 4424 4 1 4-7 VP-1 4 4 4g i -4 4' ie74: of s-- 44 IL i 00-" -4 4 2' 4 ii-:) t' ":7 '1 4 -4 -itI'PZV l'! in Saturday's NCAA Division II playoff game between Eastern Illinois and the University of California Davis But don't let the UCD defense hear you berate "Mo" Shouts of "C'mon Mo" from UCD players and fans were aimed at Mike Moroski the Aggies' quarterback and only player ever selected from Davis to participate in the East- West Shrine game He did not have one of his better days passing in the first half Although Moroski was 8 for 16 he threw one costly interception and several of his completions were wobbly With the offense fumbling twice in the first half and Moroski performing below par the Aggie defense grew a little short-tempered "What's going on out there?" shouted defensive back Jeff Allen from the sidelines "We're stinking up the field" Some of the disgruntled Aggie fans jumped on the wagon of disbelief and started to ride Moroski But the ride was a short one After a few Moroski derogatories from the crowd Aggie linebacker Eric Tye simply turned to the crowd and stated "He's the best damn quarterback on the West Coast so shut up" The fans shut up And in the second halt Moroski played like the best quarterback on the West Coast But the Aggies' second-half comeback fell short and they lost 35- 31 "We put a lot of pressure on ourselves in the first half" said Moroski after the game "They were a good team but when you fumble as much as we did and make mistakes like we did it just adds more pressure "The interception I threw in the second quarter was the turning point of the game I saw the defender but it was a poorly thrown pass No my knee didn't hurt today at least no more than usual" Moroski's interception came after the Aggies had blocked a Panther punt Moroski's comment about his knee came after he was asked if that was the reason for his bad first half "I will say that this is the worst shape I have been in" said Moroski "With the knee injury it is hard to keep in shape You can't exercise like you are used to and consequently you can't do the things you are used to doing on the field Several other Aggie players couldn't do some of the things they were used to either Split end Jeff Zimmerman and flanker Calvin Ellison were nearly shut down in the first half "They (Eastern Illinois) must have scouted us pretty good" said Ellison "Some of our plays we run across the middle that are always open were completly covered We had them beat on the post sat out part of the second half as Eastern went to more of a running game "It was a disappointing loss" concluded Sochor "We really wanted this one and we thought we could play with Eastern Illinois But they are a good team Our turnovers and their ability to capitalize on them and make the big plays was the difference" In the other Division II semifinal Delaware a 42-27 winner over Jack fts Utt
