J. C. Brown's letter to Ti'B Woki.h denying that he referred to the Equal Eights question in his address at the Imperial Opera House the other evening. Well, sir, I happened to be there and that as the impression I went away with, and I claim to lie a fairly intelligent man. Why should Mr.

Brown refer to "the movement in favor of popular rights and popular legislation all over the world?" There is none such, unless it is that hich has been going on for years and years. Those who know Mr. Brown, and are familiar with his views, would not be at all surprised to learn that in an ungarded moment he gave vent to his true feelings and expressed himself in favor of the so called Equal Eights movement in Ontario. grouted the boon of two members. Could anything he fairer than that if we had not l'ccn granti representation at all in the next Assembly what an outcry would have gone up from one end of the city to the other! The Administration would have been denounced as entirely regardless of our right, awl would probably have had an indignation meeting and, after the New Westminster style, a lew etligies burned to tickle the small hoys. But when we are given two members, as a move only in the direction of something better in the near future, demagoguism is allowed full swing and the Government censured on its general policy, however beneficial it may be to the whole country. Fortunately, the mountebanks who are parading their nostrums before the electorate are fast being found out, and we have every reason to b'jUive that when the ballots are counted, it will be found that only those candidates are elected who have shown a disposition to look at the matter from the standpoint of intelligent men who have at heart the best interests of one of the best governed provinces in the liominif n. Statistics recently published in the newspapers of Washington city show that in the District of Columbia the ratio of divorces to marriages is one of the former to every twenty tf the latter. Chicago beat Washington in the World's Fair contest, but on this point of heretofore assumed supremacy the lake city will have to step back and let the capital go to the front.

However, Chicago is a good second. A iu a London pajier proposes a scheme for blowing up the ico about the north pole with dynamite. Among the practical results to follow will be the destruction of arctic cold, the moderation of the weather in the north temperate zone, the opening of the Northwest passage aud the stoppage of tho North Atlantic storms. The pole, in fact, won't be of much account after the explosion. It is not made quite clear how the thing is to be got iu shape to go off.

TilKHE is a pretty romance attached to Miss Dokutiiv Tkxnan't, who is going to marry Mr. Stanley. Miss Tknnant is the original of the beautiful girl in Sir lulls" Mii.i ais' well known picture called Yes or No, which shows a young woman meditating on the fateful answer to a love letter, which she holds in her hand behind her back. You may call it whichever you like, either yes or no," said Mll.l.AiMtoher, when he had completed the picture. Why not leave it an open question for the present?" was her artful answer.

They say that Sir John will now present the painting to her with the simple inscription, Yes. It will be news to the public to hear that three days before Stanlev departed on his perilous mission to find Kmin Pasha he proposed to Miss Ten xant and was duly accepted by her. Baroness Bi'mjett t'orrrs and some half a dozen near friends were informed of the engagement, but all were sworn to the strictest secrecy until such time as the lovers should deem it fit to make their engagement public. How well these few privileged friends have kept their trust may be judged from the fact that nearly four years have passed and not one word has escaped their lips. The Culvniitt, speaking editorially yesterday morning, says "Times change, and men change with them." We were forcibly reminded of the truth of this old saying when reading the Duke of Argyll's article, The Story of a Conspirator, in the May number of tho Xiitelfrnth Crnturi).

Here is a passage trom the article, which will lie interesting to our readers "And now suddenly there arose one of those iiecidt'tits which, as Mr. Hrieht once said, 'tire always happening to briiiKOUt httcut causes into Hctive operation. In the far region of Nnotka Sound (Vancouver Island), which hud been surveyed by Uook, two Spanish uiell ol' war committed, in May, 1710, an insolent and treacherous outrage on two llritlsh vessels en piltfed ill the furimde. The vessels were seized and plunder, whilst the crews were put iu irons. Mr.

Fitt was still bent on peace, ibit he was the sou of Chatham, and no llritbh minister could submit to such an ontrnire. There was an immediate demand for reparation, and iiu immediate uuliii.ut ji puwejiui licet." Even the Irish Parliament voted the sum of toward the war preparations in consequence of the aggression in Nootka Sound. But we, in these days, have changed all that. British Ministers see the British Hag insulted and British subjects robbed of their property on the high seas without doing more than to utter a few words of weak protest. The blood of the Pitts does not run in their veins.

Ol'K contemporary's arraignment of the imbecile policy of the Saij.siu ky Government and its utter disregard of the rights of colonies is strong, but not more so than the occasiou demands. The outrage inflicted, through its supineness, on the sealing industry in this Province is on a par with the general policy of an Administration which will lie justly relegated to private life as soon as the people are afforded an opportunity to speak at the polls. Thos. Dunn Is it the intention of tho Government, when the census is taken, to redistribute the seat! then, or to wait for four years Hon. Mr. Rolison Thcro Is no Iriti iitlon to wait for four your. As to the first part of the question, it will depend Hpon the result of the ceusus takinp.

If that does not justify any further redistribution, there will be none. I assume), lis a mutter of'ulmost certainty. Unit It will Justify It; but one cannot tell. Attorney General Ah soon it the census Is taken, we shall be In il position to hrlinr ilown legislation. We do not want to wait four years, assuming the result renders a redistribution necessary.

THE TRUE I'O SI TIGS'. The course pursued by Truth in the present campaign is in striking contrast with that which the Columbian has mapped out for itself. The one ib dignified, reasonable and logical, while tho other acts like a fussy, old hen cackling very harshly over the tribulations of her little household. We venture the opinion that hen the elections are over it will be found just how much influence the Columbian has in New Westminster City ami District. If it does not come out at the small end of the horn we shall be very much surprised.

Speaking of tee good, common sense which characterizes Truh we have great pleasure in reproducing the following from its editorial columns of this morning, with every line of which we agree In the present local election campaign in this district the Truth has all along been endeavoring to show that while the objects of the Mainland Society, so far as they relate to an etlbrt to obtain fair representation, are to be cordially approved, the methods pursued by that society have been calculated really to defeat that object. The society has gathered within its membership all such people as havo leanings against the Government, no matter on what ground their objections may be based. So great a factor is this element in the ranks of the society that it has from the very first vitiated the sentiment of the society and so diverted its movements from that course whic was originally marked out for it, that the Government cannot look upon it other than as a body hostile to the administration on general principles. The Government has been thus forced to regard the society as part and parcel of the Opposition. That was the danger that we pointed out at the time of the inauguration of the society.

Now, there is no fault to be found with people who conscientiously object to the administration and its policy. Any man has a perfect right to do that, and to criticise the actions of the Government to any extent that he may think necessary. Hut it is another thing altogether to attempt to attack a Government from a false position. The Mainland Society was ostensibly organized to secure fair representation, that was the cause of its lieing brought into existence, and with such an object in view it was to be approved by Ministerialist and Oppositionist alike. The Premier himself might have joined that society, the only objection being the stupidly sectionai name given to it.

The l'remier, if he is to be given the slightest credit at all for honesty of purpose and truthfulness of statement, has been an extremely active worker iu favor of fair representation. The society, indeed, bases its opposition to the Government on the ground that he is the only member of the Cabinet willing or anxious to do justice in this matter. They say Mr. Ilobson speaks only for himself when he declares for representation bypopu latiwii. And still the Mainland Society says that he should not be elected a member of the House.

What is the l'remier, the Government or the people to think of the anomalous oosruwn hip i utviv the only conclusion that can be arrived at tint, t.h S.i. irty, no matter what it may Claim 10 me contrary, is wniinircit'ti uv wie inlluence of those members of it who are opposed on geueral principles tothoGovern ment. Oar stcemcd contemporary talks what every unprejudiced man must know to be truth. No true principle has guided those 1 ity. wrin.ii iiwto tticnm vrant in bile party traces and followed in the wake of what they regard as popular feeling.

They may succeed for the time, but in the end they will be found out and covered with ignominy. It renuires a brave man. firm in the belief that he is in the right, to stand face to face with tho wrong and denounce it. Time, however, brings its reward as it will in this case, and it will be clearly shown that those journals which stood up for the maintenance ol the prevail ing conditions in Tiritisri Colurnhfa were far sighted enough to foresee that liny other course would only end in disaster for the Province. A fairer proposition was never made by any Premier than that which the Hon.

Jons" Robsov enunciated in this city. He brought for ward, however rehicantly, ft measure which was the best that could have been devised under existing circumstances.
