JOHN HURST Bee Staff Writer Don't call FM radio's 15 KZAP an "uttderground" station ra thank you Not that is unless you want to hear some of the ensuing from a 34- 1 year-old ex-Marine captain named Edward Beimfohr KZAP's president-general manager since1973 "The very term is pejorative" says Beimfohr whose master's degree in business administration is from Pennsylvania's prestigious Wharton School "and I object mightily when I hear it" A major reason he gets so testy about the "underground" label even while admitting it may have been a useful' one for KZAP back in the late 60s is the reading of Henry Miller And there was the time in 1972 when the station carried the nation's first broadcast commercial campaign for condoms More recently in 1975 the station created a minor stir with its poll showing 38 per cent of the 30 responding Assembly members had among other things smoked marijuana and 73 per cent had engaged in oral sex acts that were then illegal "It's a mistake" says Beimfohr "to think of KZAP's audience as a counterculture audience It's an element of it but much of what was the counterculture 10 years ago is now the culture "Our own surveys show our audience also Includes a lot of young professionals a lot of state workers a lot of highly educated people a lot of college students and military They don't consider themselves counterculture in any sense" Toe Stomper Suspect Held ATLANTA (UPI) Police said today they believe George Mitchell of Nashville Tenn is the notorious downtown toe stomper Mitchell 28 was arrested Thursday when he allegedly tried to stomp on a woman's foot In thb past several days several woman have reported having their feet bruised by a man who ground the heel of one of his platform shoes into the their feet then fled One woman underground or illegal" Beimfohr maintains "although it espoused what in the 60s were then-popular counterculture viewpoints "They were not the prevailing viewpoints but distinctly those of a counter-subculture so it was easy to tag them 'underground' "The term is an appellation cast on FM rock radio by segments of the industry that it was reacting against When I hear the term used now I immediately think the person using it is 10 years out of touch with the communications industry "The fact is FM rock radio is burgeoning in this country I believe what we are sitting on top of is the personality middle-of-the-road radio for the 1980s You can seern it in Sacramento: Three years ago there was only MP Now there are four FM and two AM rock stations in town" Beimfolu prefers the term "progressive radio" for KZAP "because its approach to music is very open playing many styles and eras of music" But he says the term being used in the industry now is "ikon" for "albutnoriented rock" "The original FM KZAP: 6:30 pm 3 Reports News 5 Cronkite CBS News News Credit Course: Chant to Chance News 10 Nightly News Mery Griffin Show (1 Hr 30 Min) rock stations were more-or-less 'underground'" he says "But with the process of becoming legitimatized we now find FM rock stations with 'top-40' approaches and 'progressive' approaches and everything in between "The whole spectrum is represented right here in Sacramento in fact In the larger markets there are getting to be more and more ways of presenting FM rock That's why I say what we're looking at is the major radio style for the 1980s" It wasn't always thus Nor for that matter was KZAP which Beimfohr took over in April 1973 when New Day Broadcasting Co of Sacramento bought it from the California Talking Machine and Wireless Co a part of the estate of the late Lawrence Gahagan KZAP's founder When KZAP took the air on Nov 8 1968 it billed itself as "freeform" radio "high above Sacramento" That last while hinting at another kind of high pertained to KZAP's location in the tower atop the old downtown Elks Club building at Ilth and Streets (The station now faces Plaza Park from the third floor of 924 9th St) "The station was on the rocks when we took over" Beimfohr says adding that among other things "its insistence on control of commercials and commercial content along with its anti-Establishment stance was killing it" Still Beimfohr Co have retained a number of the station's distinctive features including 'a staff of 20 full-timers and 8 part-timers offering classical jazz and other excursions from the basic rock format regular news shows with at least an eye for some of the system's seams and such regular features as Saturday morning children's story readings and discussions of organic foods They are features made even more distinctive because they buck a trend in FM radio toward automated computerized programming But there have been some real adventures over the years Like the time a few seasons back when a local gunman holed up in a house surrounded by the police refused to surrender until KZAP assured him over the air that he could emerge unharmed if he emerged unarmed Or the time in 1970 when then-Sheriff John Mister ly aroused by KZAP's 'interview-studded coverage of marijuana-smoking "busts" in Ancil Hoffman Park accused the station of promoting another weekend confrontation
