4-C THE MAW HERALD Sunday Jan 2 J96G Spotlighting Sports iSTj ftJ jjg a Herald Sportt Editor Hospitality and Salesmanship Provide Keys to Success MOMENTS BEFORE the kickoff in the 32nd Orange Bowl football game Saturday night Tippy Dye Nebraska athletic director voiced admiration for the sponsoring OBC could get any teams you wanted here for this said Dye is colleges not committed by their conferences to the Rose and Cottom The OBC has reached this enviable position in bowl sponsorship by using hospitality and personal salesmanship as the key to succees Over a period of years the OBC has entertained the visiting teams royally and the players have passed the word Miami is the place for fun Three weeks before their season ended Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant Alabama's Rav Perkins Heads for First TD on 21-Yard Pass From Steve Sloan in 1st Period BALDWIN ORANGE B0WM966 Sloan Guides Alabama To Win Over Huskers third quarter Churchich hit Ben Gregory with a 48-yard scoring pass Ray broke up Wayne Werber's two-point pass attempt and Alabama led 24-13 Alabama struck bark with Kelley's 23-yard run to launrh a retaliatory drive Row man got the last yard at left guard and Sloan passed to Perkins for two points and a 32-13 margin with 4:29 left in the period Nebraska reached Alabama's one-yard line as the third quarter ended Churchich scored on the first play of the fourth quarter Wach-holtz's kick reduced lead to 32-20 With 8T3 left in the game three-yard plunge and Ray's kick boosted the margin to 39-20 A 14-yard pass from Churchich to Jeter and a two-pomt conversion pass to Giegory reduced the deficit to 38-28 with 250 remaining Most of the fans were on their way home by then Churchlch who had been warming up on the sidelines came In and hit Tony Jeter at the 20 with a pass which he converted Into the touchdown Wachholtz made it 7-7 with his kick Despite a 13-yard penalty Sloan's passing swept the Tide to its second touchdown eating up yards with 13 plays The big one was a diving catch of a pass for 39 yards by Perkins at 12 Bowman exploded through the line for eight and Leslie Keliey hit right guard for the touchdown kick made it Alabama a 14-7 edge with 7:11 remaining in the second quarter Sloan kept the ball in the air except for one short buck by Canterbury as the Tide moved 93 yards in nine plays for its third touchdown It came when Sloan passed 11 yards to Perkins for the touchdown and Ray made it 21-7 with 134 left in the half The aggressive Tidesmen tried an onside kick which Vernon New hill recovered at Nebraska's 46 Sloan hit Perkins with a 35-yard pass and four plays later Ray kicked an 18-yard field goal with 38 seconds remaining in the half Canterbury recovered another onside kick at 46 Wachholtz intercepted Sloan's pass ending a streak of 113 in a row without an interception With 10:33 left in the Continued From Page 1C son Tide 69 yards In eight plays Including three passes to put six points on the score board with 9:36 remaining In the first quarter The drive was fused by Sloan's pass to Jerry Duncan on an eligible tackle play for 17 yards The touchdown came on a pass to Perkins on the north side of the field He almost fell but recovered after his hand touched the ground at the nine-yard line Ray kicked the extra point and Alabama led 7-0 Bama tried an onside kickoff but it backfired by not going the required 10 yards and was recovered by Frank Canterbury at his 36 Ray had kicked from Nebrask's 43 because of a personal foul on the extra point try Kirkland busted through right tackle for 27 yards to set off a drive which ended in a futile 20-yard field goal trial by Larry Wachholtz Bama drove 71 yards to a first down at the six but defense tightened On fourth down from the three Ray was wide to the left with a 19-yard field goal attempt Nebraska tied the score with 1213 left in the half Wachholtz signalled for a fair catch of a punt at 48 and the Tide's Dennis Homan grabbed him after the catch This gave the Cornhuskers the ball at 33 and Alabama Nebraska 17 I 7-3 2i had his Alabama players vote a preference of a bowl game just in case they should have a choice The boys balloted unanimously for the Orange Bowl The same was true at Nebraska when Coach Bob Devaney passed the pencil and paper with the exception of one dissenter This player thought the Cornhuskers should tackle Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl The OBC reached a new high this year by hosting a party for the Cornhuskers when they went to warmer Phoenix Ariz for preliminary practice The hosts were Jackson Baldwin and Jim Llewellyn fellows think of Walter Byers NCAA executive secretary told OBC President Robert Hector Here in Miami Bill Ward Jr anticipated needs and kept the Tidesmen happy Despite tide glitter and glory of this game it teas a depressing evening for Orange Bowl Committee members They went about their work with heavy hearts having heard that their fellow member Dr A Kasper had been found dead in his home apparently of a heart jattack He had been watching football on television Tickets May Continue Scarce THE ORANGE BOWL game was sold out in November prior to announcement that Nebraska and Alabama were matched The class of the Cornhuskers third rated and the Crimson Tide fourth ranked increased the demand This 32nd game had acapacity crowd of 74000 but the official seating capacity of paid admissions is 9000 Under NCAA rules the OBC had to split 23000 tickets between Nebraska and Alabama had orders for 20000 tickets and Nebraska could have sold said Hector would hate to see the public sale allocation reduced but it is up to the new administration to decide whether it will make more tickets available to the teams Also I would like to see the NCAA permit a sudden death playoff in the event of a tie in a bowl Actually if purchasers of tickets from the participating colleges come here from out of state it is a good deal for Miami Presuming that the two teams brought 20000 fans here they spent a minimum of $3 million in the area in five days Take Another Look at Blackout THE PLIGHT of the Sugar Bowl there were thousands of vacant seats for the Missouri-Florida game Saturday emphasizes that the OBC was justified in imposing a television blackout of its game within a 150-mile radius of Miami I respect the claim that you cannot give away something you are trying to sell However I think the boys would do well to take another look at the TV blackout along these lines Why not establish a policy that the blackout will be lifted each year when there is a complete sellout of tickets by Dec This would be simple to control and if it worked to give locals a view of the live telecast it would make a lot of people happy Seiler Rates Bis Salute SOME of my friends even newspaper colleagues chide me for annually hailing Ernie Seiler OBC executive vice president for the job he does with his King Orange Jamboree parade the New night pre-game and halftime extravaganza The people like these shows and I wound Ernie although he has his faults Seiler whom I tagged the at times can be more stubborn than a balking Mississippi mile obviously partial to the television people because the National Broadcasting Company coughs up $300000 for the TV rights But face it When the old retires the OBC probably will have to hire two or three people to do the dreaming planning and work that Ernie does Help the Community THE OBC irritates people at times (me too) but the members mainly are dedicated fellows who give unselfishly of their time thousands of man hours to help the community and I would hate to think of Miami without its Orange Bowl Festival week the visitors that it lures and the national publicity that it produces Bob Hector has been a good president He will have an excellent successor in one of the three vice presidents be elevated to the presidency in February John Ring Bill Lantaff or Billy Gaither iVo Kick on Budget Mishap THE OBC will continue the careful planning and scouting which enabled it to grab off two of the top teams for its game Last September the OBC listed 24 colleges which figured to produce bowl teams and wrote letters to the coaches expressing interest in their teams and wishing them well This was the personal touch in salesmanship Then the football division headed by Baldwin started scouting teams in mid-October 1 went over our travel budget of Baldwin admitted I think be too much complaining when we make our report to the committee as a I should think not! It was monev well spent and now I should think not: it was monev well spent and now Perkins 21 pass from Sloan (Rav kick) Jeter pass from Churchich (Wachholtz kick) Kelley 4 run (Ray kick) Perkins 11 pass from Sloan (Ray kick) FG Ray 1 Gregory 4 pass from Churchich (pass failed) Bowman 1 run (Parkins pass from Sloan) Churchich 1 run (Wachholtz kick) Bowman 3 run (Ray kick) Jeter 14 Pats from Churchich (Gregory pass from Churchich) Attendance: 74200 r-n r- iiifty i ii ii ii inn nmurirn fn" It Wimwn Tackle on Fair Catch Costs Baina 15-Yards Tide's Homan crushes usher's Wachholts 1 i Arm Tunis frv Him other bowl sponsors are copying the system I retl JJlIv UlS Anil 1 Hills lO.
