field goal by Jon Langford three minutes earlier Stanford had come from behind to tie the score 17-17 on pass from Mike Cordova to Eric Test midway through the final period sAfter Langford's field goal had given Stanford the lead Penn State quarterback Tom Shuman completed passes of 18 10 and 21 yards to carry the Nittany Lions to a first down at the Stanford 27 Petchell ran off another first down at the 13 then Shuman threw for Dick Barvinchak in the end zone where Stanford defensive back Rich Waters was called for interference to give State a first down at the one Petchell then scored the winning touchdown The Penn State comeback spoiled a sensational performance by Cordova who completed 23 of 51 passes for 301 yards and two scores Stanford trailing 17-10 after three quarters came back to tie on a 14- play 80-yard drive in which Cordoya completed six passes He wrapped it up with his 10-yard strike to Test After a Penn State punt Cordova 1'1' (1-) t-'tW 4:1 1 7-fl-- it i ji-t- Penn State unveiling a new double-barreled offense of Donchez inside and flanker Jim Easie on wide reverses built a 14-0 lead in the second period Donehez scored the first touchdown from the six and tailback Walt Addie tallied from the one Stanford cut it to 14-10 at the half on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Cordova to Ron Inge and a 39-yard field goal by Langford Stanford coach Jack Christiansen said he wasn't surprised when Penn State came out in a Wing-T "He (Joe Paterno) had used it in the past and we thought he might go back to it" Christiansen said "He certainly hid it from the press" Christiansen said his defense had some problems with Penn State's new formations as the Lions built the early 14-0 lead Christiansen said he felt Penn State played it smart in kicking off at the start of the game and taking advantage of a strong wind "We got in a bad position and then they ran back that punt and scored first It was an uphill fight all the way" Christiansen was pleased by the performance of Cordova "He (Cordova) looks like something to build with for the next three years" Christiansen said Stanford came back in the second half "We didn't make any adjustments" said Christiansen "We finally started to move in the second quarter Defensively we wanted to find ways to put more pressure on the quarterback Tom Shuman We wanted to stop the off-tackle and end run plays We stopped them and then Penn State went to the fullback" Christiansen whose Cardinals were hurt by penalties especially in the fourth period was asked his opinions of the officiating: "I thought it stunk" he said "We changed our offense a bit" said Penn State coach Joe Paterno Paterno's eighth-ranked Nitany Lions blossomed out with a wing-T and a double wing that featured a series of flanker reverses There were few flashes of Paterno's customary power-I offense "We don't have that" said Paterno who has had to replace tailback John Cappelletti his 1973 Heisman trophy winner "We've had to diversify our offense" 00r 1 r'ir '11 'Je''' 4i kil 4 ri -0'' i)ti: 'z 4 ioe ri' 1)4 17ri I ftlic i li 0 044f lt 4' I -)i li If A' tS04: i4 lir" 1 4 ft iqt 7arg Av tr'f '-2 441 '4 47 kr 1 IN -1-4 ''3:
