which loses only four of 22 starters to graduation ran up 372 yards rushing against an uncertain often inept Jayhawk defense that had scored a regular-season 23-3 victory over mighty Oklahoma Tony Dorsett and Elliott Walker each scored two Pitt touchdowns under the brilliant sunshine that bathed this border city and served as the chief weapons on offensive arsenal Dorsett rushed for 142 yards and Walker contributed 123 including a 60-yard touchdown burst in the first quarter Haygood voted the outstanding player in the game had 101 yards rushing delayed his pitchouts from the wishbone until the last possible moment and often sent Walker and Dorsett on their way with one or two Jayhawk defenders dragging him too late to the ground In his few passing attempts he steadfastly stood his ground in a search for receivers and then time after time scrambled out of trouble with big gains Pittsburgh which lost two of its last three regular season games when Haygood was out of action ran up a 19-0 advantage at the half and coasted in from there EL PASO Tex (AP) Until two days ago Pittsburgh coach Johnny Majors sure whether start Robert Haygood or Matt Cavanaugh at quarterback in the Sun Bowl football game against Kansas was kind of like flipping a Majors said of the two young men who are roommates Haygood had started first seven games and was injured Cavanaugh then took over Now he had both of them healthy Haygood lost his starting Majors said talked to both of them before the game and I asked if one of them got a hot hand if the other would mind if I let him go all they way They said for me to do what I thought was He went with Haygood a junior And Haygood responded with an inspired performance that triggered a 33-19 rout and won him honors as the outstanding player He scrambled for more than 100 yards on the ground completed 8 of 11 passes including one for a touchdown and deftly directed a wishbone attack that left the favored Kansas defenders if not bewitched then certainly bothered and bewildered practiced Haygood said consistently worked hard all year I had confidence in myself You Between The Shining In The Sun Bowl Gambling Devils Defeat Nebraska A
