Saturday November 8 1975 Page A13 THE SACRAMENTO BEE Politicos Talk A Strange Breed Of 'Bull' stage Irishman The Irish politician is portrayed as full of blarney beguiling a bestower ot favors and-the master of malapropisms and oratory that mutilates if not murders the English Such a politician is not above calling for a probe of the state university it is a known fact that on campus boys and girls matriculate And he accuses his political opponent of practicing nepotism with his own sister-in-law" A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA columnist recently reminisced about the San Francisco supervisor of Irish descent who had a reputation for malapropisms and as a self appointed watch dog of public funds On one occasion after listening to more than an hour of debate by the Board of Supervisors on a proposal to allocate J92000 for the purchase of 10 Italian gondolas to grace a lake in a city park die supervisor suggested: we just buy two and let nature take its The same supervisor once declared that the city was without funds to its indignant and on another occasion said the public was up with exuberant DWIGHT EISENHOWER Murphy was adamantly opposed doubt the construction of a public urinal would add greatly to the many fine amenities" he declared at this time of financial crisis there just is no money for such The council voted to deny the request The women approached Murphy after the meeting and asked why he was so opposed to such a worthwhile project He repeated his statement that no town funds were available but in subsequent conversation the suspicions were confirmed Murphy was unfamiliar with the word urinal and had no idea what they were talking about Tactfully the women explained adding that it was but a long overdue act of Christian charity to provide facilities for the farmers who packed the town square each fair day opposition melted and he promised the women that if they brought their request to the next City Council meeting he would back them to the hilt He was as good as his word only do I believe that the construction of a public urinal in the town square is long overdue he declared will go further and move that the City Council also allocate funds for an declared is a profession a serious complicated and in its true sense a noble But those who disagreed with him are legion The Bard of Avon defined a politician as that would circumvent Said Jonathan Swift: could make two ears of com or two blades of grass to grow upon a spot of ground where only one grew before would deserve better of mankind and do more essential service to his country than the whole race of politicians put Winston Churchill saw things a little differently: are almost as exciting as war and quite as dangerous In war you can only be killed once but in politics many Bernard Baruch advised the public to for the man who promises least be the least Humorist Rogers declared politics is and lamented that politics has got so expensive that it takes lots of money to even get SOME YEARS AGO IN IRELAND the women of a rural town approached the City Council at budget time with a request that funds be allocated to construct a public urinal in the town square But Councilman By ALFRED ALLEN Bee Staff Writer AS THE IRISH POLITICIAN remarked time has come when we must seize the bull by the tail and look the situation square in the With the presidential elections coming up next year we can expect a spate of oratory from political hopefuls who seem to promise all things to all men but in terms which never quite solidify to the point of future accountability Politicians are a strange breed a breed all their own It takes a high degree of mental alacrity for a man or woman to field questions from an audience seemingly providing answers to all but never allowing themselves to be pinned in a comer or forced to take a position on an issue from which it would be difficult to retreat The skillful politician is never stumped for an answer He will field a tough question by remarking glad you asked that question my and then if necessary to give himself time to think repeat the-question The born politician is one who can speak for three or four minutes in reply to a question without ever saying anything the audience can retain and ending up by saying there I think that answers your while all he has done is obscure the issue BACK IN THE 1930s humorist Will Rogers reassured the nation have the best politicians money can And on the matter of buying politicians Simon Cameron Republican boss of Pennsylvania back in 1860 is credited with declaring honest politician is one who when he is bought will stay Equally cynical was Louis McHenry Howe secretary to President Franklin Roosevelt who (On The Light Side) maintained cannot adopt politics as a profession and remain Mencken said: whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of Henry Adams said politics consists in ignoring and Ambrose Bierce defined politics as conduct of public affajrs for private OVER" THE YEARS THE IRISH politician on both sides of the Atlantic has developed as a stereotype almost as familiar as the Nostalgia Flick 'Peeper' A Shortsighted Parody Of '40s Private Eye Movies Unfortunately it fails to generate the frenzy of and falls short of the delicious plotting of And as nostalgia it never does capture the feel of an-early-day Los Angeles that did so well or that managed to a lesser degree As Tucker Caine is not as crisp as he can be Natalie Wood playing one of the twins is passable and comes the closest to hitting the tone needed for a film parody but Kitty Winn playing the other twin turns in a performance that occasionally lapses into stagy high school playing Others in the cast tend to play their parts a bit too broadly to fit in with the light tone needed to pull a work like this off likes to my the rest of the film to figure that out The trouble is it also takes a lot of talk in the form of narrative that never is quite clever enough and repartee that probably have much sparkle even in 1947 As a parody of the Hollywood detective movie Movies falls short The dialogue is too cute and the direction by Peter Hyams fails to give the film the light touch it needs pays homage to the detective genre by starting off with something of a brassy imitation of Bogart But its real heritage seems to rest in such recent nostalgia pieces as and By DAN Bee Staff Writer comes to you courtesy the nostalgia craze This time with Michael Caine playing a a peeper in 1947 Los hired now lugging a suitcase that has to be important and running from three thugs who never seem as menacing as they should in a hurry That and an old photograph lead Tucker to a Beverly Hills mansion where he finds an unaccommodating brother-in-law a nasty old woman and the twin daughters Or are they? I used to ask On The Go A Roundup of Weekend Events By WILLIAM CGLACKIN Bee Arts Editor A MOZART FESTIVAL could probably run forever by the time you got to No 626 in the Koechel Catalogue be ready to start over The Mozart festival currently being presented by the San Francisco Symphony Fall Orchestra in three bay area halls runs to only three programs each repeated twice And looking over the three one feels they reflect hardly at all certain aspects of his genius the almost incredible vocal richness and beauty of the major operas for instance or the soul-shaking depths of the But what richness and beauty remain even in the relatively light-hearted range of the first program conducted with wonderful warmth and musicianship by Alexander Schneider in Zellerbach Hall at UC Berkeley the other night! The distance from the exquisite perfection of Kleine Little to the German 571 proved far and there were some remarkable unexpected vistas along the way THE STRIKING thing about was its human warmth its presence It can seem like an elegant 18th century miniature particularly in the disembodied sounds of a recording And of course it is But Schneider and his 27 string players made it more The graceful lively first movement went at an unhurried pace with a vital string sound as if good friends were re-examining the masterpiece with an affection to match their respect The transparent texture of the slow movement was voiced with care the finale was as light as it was merry positively light-headed Schneider helped all this happen with a firm subtle grasp of the work's dynamics For the in 251 Schneider took over the chair and conducted from there while playing the violin for which he is even more famous Opposite him was oboist Jean Louis LeRoux whose role was almost as important The orchestra was reduced to about 17 including two French horns LIKE SO MUCH of Mozart particularly in this vein the work's six movements are notable for a lively vigorous rhythmic sense and a flow of melody that seems endless It was composed as a birthday present for sister and the mood is predominantly merry particularly in the racing rondo But that same rondo has an episode in a minor key that jolts one into another mood (brilliant oboe playing here from LeRoux) and there is a gentle lyricism in the slow movement led with consummate' restraint by violin that takes the listener into still other paths of feeling Like this divertimento the for flute harp and orchestra in 299 is commonly described as French in style and form and like the divertimento is marked by lightness and elegance of expression But Mozart is almost never that simple There is a major development of themes in the first movement for instance with some minor-key passages for flute which are as interesting as they are beautiful MOZART WROTE the work in Paris in 1778 on commission from two rich talented amateurs the Due de Guines (flute) and his daughter (harp) The great Mozart authority Alfred Einstein says Mozart care to make only moderate demands on their and reminds us that Mozart was notoriously unfond of the flute Nevertheless there are some truly perfect moments of writing for the instruments together particularly in the slow movement like the passage in which the flute sustains long tones over rippling arpeggios in the harp and the ten-derest kind of string music The solo roles were played with notable skill and authority by flutist Paul Renzi and harpist Anne Adams both veteran first-chair members of the orchestra In 1787 Mozart was hired as court composer by Emperor Joseph II whose demands on his genius were limited mostly to dance music The German are short (about 90 seconds each) and hearty one wonders if the noble dancers at these masked balls slapped their heels and knees to these rhythms Even here though the composer cannot restrain his inventiveness there are interesting little touches of originality unexpected turns of thought And the sixth dance is wonderfully jokey with a threatening storm of rhythm (led by a tambourine!) in the trio and a funny ending which bounces from one instrument to the other until it lands at last on the plucked strings of the bass Schneider led all of this with a fine hand for tempos The festival will continue with the pianist Christoph Eschcnbach playing and conducting a program which includes two concertos Nov 13 at Zellerbach and Nov 14 at the Palace of ine Arts in San Francisco He will play a solo recital in Flint Center in Cupertino Nov 16 The final program which will include the "Symphony No and "The (in a concert version) will be
