Jack (Saver Directors Long Memory Pays Off for Young Actor By RON BURTON United Press Staff Correspondent OF TODD AND TOLSTOY MEW YORK (UP) Two things are certain Count Leo Tolstoys famous marathon novel, War and Peace, is finally going to get onto movie screens; and the most popular army in film circles today is Titos Yugoslavian machine. I may not make any casting announcements for months yet. Ill only say that theres scarcely a-top actor anywhere who hasnt expressed interest in being in it, even if only in a small part. I want to have the world premiere of this picture in London in September, 1956. Well start shooting on location in Yugoslavia Sept 15 and weII be working there probably until next January or February. The studio stuff will be done in London.

Todd was asked why the emphasis on Yugoslavia. Well, you certainly cant do it in Russia, he said. And by the way, the Moscow radio announced last week that Russia is going to make its own version of the Counts novel. Anyway, you need terrain similar to that in Russia. We found it in Yugoslavia.

You need those fine Slavic faces in the battle scenes, and Yugoslavia has them. You cant fake them with ordinary movie extras when you use the Todd-AO process because it gives you such an intimate view of the actors that you have to have the real thing. Yugoslavia also is about the only place available that has an army that still uses a lot of horses.
