Jack (Saver Directors Long Memory Pays Off for Young Actor By RON BURTON United Press Staff Correspondent OF TODD AND TOLSTOY MEW YORK (UP) Two things are certain Count Leo Tolstoys famous marathon novel, War and Peace, is finally going to get onto movie screens; and the most popular army in film circles today is Titos Yugoslavian machine. The dynamic Michael Todd, whose defection to the WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 1955 PASADENA (CALIF.) INDEPENDENT relative dropped in for a bite to eat and saw the youth. Andrews was persuaded by his father to join him in the fruit produce business, and the young man stayed with it until World War II when he enlisted in the Army. However, the theater was still on his mind, and after his discharge he gave up oranges and bananas for acting. He entered the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and later won a part in a Broadway play, Hidden Horizon, in which he utilized hLs Syrian descent to speak what was billed as Arabic.

The play lasted only briefly. Wesfs Seven Wonders Shown in Color Film Francis R. Line, film lecturer of 77 Patrician Way, will narrate the color movie, Seven Wonders of the West, at tonights dinner meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers in Los Angeles' Rodger Young Auditorium. Lines home includes the Eagle Rock for which that section of Los Angeles is named. Director John Ford has a long memory, and Tige Andrews is thankful for it because thats why he is making his screen debut in Warners Mister Roberts.

It seems that more than six years ago Andrews appeared in the Broadway production of Mister Roberts. Ford saw a performance and then went back-stage. Id like very much to direct Mister Roberts some day as a motion picture, and if I do, Id like you to be in it, he told Andrews. Ford is and Andrews is. Andrews background starts in Brooklyn, where he, one of 10 children, was christened Tiger.

He recently shortened it to Tige for his film work, which probably was launched technically in early training in a little-theater group. This happened when he ran away from home at the time the family was living in Middlesex, N.J. and joined a theater group in Brooklyn. The teenager supported himself, more or less, by working in an Automat. But one day things ended at least temporarily when a ITS BRUTAL Sterling Hayden (left), David Brian mix it up in The Tim-berjack, color film opening today at United Artois Theater.

Rod Cameron stars in movies is one reason Broadway is rather dull these days, was the first to come up with the idea of using Yugoslav troops and terrain for the battle scenes of his Napoleonic period piece, and he was more amused than hurt at the announcement than an Italian group planned similar strategy. Gaver I have the commitment to use Yugoslav troops on official paper and have had it since last Dec. 15, when I was in Belgrade, Todd said, producing documents to back up his claim. Carlo Ponti and Dino De Lau-rentiis are the Italian producers who are planning Paramounts rival version and claimed that Tito would permit them to use troops. A spokesman for the Yugoslav consulate here expressed indignation over the claim and reiterated that Michael Todd has sole and exclusive right to use the Yugoslav Army in War and Peace.

Todd isnt worried about the matter actually. He has the Todd-AO process going for him, and in his opinion "War and Peace done in any other manner wont be much competition even if it should get to market first. And one of the greatest modem directors, Fred Zin-nemann. Wait till you see his Oklahoma in Todd-AO and at the same time I say that I must add that the surface has only been scratched in the use of his process. is the big-screen process developed for Todd by the American Optical Co. An original member of the Cinerama outfit which set off the large-screen revolution in pictures, Todd said he wanted a new process which would achieve Cineramas tremendous effects but with the use of merely one projector instead of three. Todd, Sherwood and Zinne-mann spent most of the week conferring here on their flans.

"That Sherwood is an amazing man, Todd said. "He actually has been thinking about War and Peace in terms of a picture for years. Hes way ahead of the game; in four weeks hes farther along with the script than he was in the first nine months on Best Years of Our Lives. Everybody naturaHy wants to know whos going to be in it. I wont announce anyone until contracts are signed.

I may not make any casting announcements for months yet. Ill only say that theres scarcely a-top actor anywhere who hasnt expressed interest in being in it, even if only in a small part. I want to have the world premiere of this picture in London in September, 1956. Well start shooting on location in Yugoslavia Sept 15 and weII be working there probably until next January or February. The studio stuff will be done in London.

Todd was asked why the emphasis on Yugoslavia. Well, you certainly cant do it in Russia, he said. And by the way, the Moscow radio announced last week that Russia is going to make its own version of the Counts novel. Anyway, you need terrain similar to that in Russia. We found it in Yugoslavia.

You need those fine Slavic faces in the battle scenes, and Yugoslavia has them. You cant fake them with ordinary movie extras when you use the Todd-AO process because it gives you such an intimate view of the actors that you have to have the real thing. Yugoslavia also is about the only place available that has an army that still uses a lot of horses.
