The Vancouver Opera House was crowded liat night with an audience that was sent home disappointed. The play, like the stage safe, was not what it was cracked up to be. The acting was poor, and the scenery, much though it was puffed, was very little beyond the passable mark. There was considerable "ber lud" scattered here and there, and the knives and revolvers introduced into the play did their parts fairly well, with the odds ou the knife, whose victim stayed dead longer than those slain by its hated rival, the revolver. The "gods" seemed to be pleased with some parts of the play, particularly where those two able actors before mentioned knife and revolver did their heroic rescue acts in the hands of a fellow who seemed to consider it his duty to make up his face like nothing in the heavens above or the earth beneath or the waters under the earth, The play is to be repeated to night.

Thank goodness for the coming of a play and an actor that one can unhesitatingly recommend. That is Sol Smith Russell. He comes this season to present his perhaps greatest success A Poor Relation. To hear him speak of his poor old hat is worth the price of admission. It is not all jest this story of A Poor Relation.

Parts of it are prettily pathetic, as for instance where Russell, as Noah Vale, sings to the children; this would soften a heart of Hint. Go and hear Russell, and you will come away the better for it. License Commissioners. The Board of License Commissioners met on Monday afternoon, with all the members present. In reply to a petition of the W.

C. U. against the selling of liquor at Brockton Point, the inspector was instructed to answer that no license could be granted and any infraction of the law will in future be punished. To the communication of Secretary Jcrvis, of the Vinters' association, a similar reply was ordered to be sent. The license inspector submitted his re port, which wa3 received aud filed.

On motion of commissioners Devine and Cargill, the inspector was instructed to prosecute all parties hereafter found selling intoxicating liquors in any place or places other than already licensed by law, Anna Schmidt was granted a restaurant license for the basement of the Holland block, and Draper Leithead a wholesale liquor license. The following transfers were granted: Tyley Myers to A. Struthers, A. Struthers to L. J.

Cross, J. Carriere to P. Dubois. Piper Campbell were allowed to chango the name of tho San Francisco hotel to the Montreal house. The applications of B.

L. Wood. N. D. Darling and C.

Edwards were laid over till next meeting. J. Holland withdrew his application for an hotel license. It was decided ou motion of commissioners Devine and Wilson that the inspector be instructed to prosecute in all cases of infraction of the Liquor by law where shop licenses are held, and where liquor is sold contrary to the terms of such licenses. Moved by Com.

Cargill, seconded by Com. Wilson, that the board adjourn to September 2Gth, and that Wulffsohn Bewick be requested to furnish proofs satisfactory to the board that the building they promised to erect was commenced in accordance with the resolution passed at the previous meeting of the board, Adjourned. Those Gangs of Hoys. The exposure made by The Would some mouths ago had the effect of making some parents look after their children, and as a result the gangs ot bait boys have been lessened. There are still some of them abroad, however, and two of the alley gang were up this morning to answer a charge of larceny, the articles purloined being a number of sacks.

The trial of the case was put over till to morrow to admit of the capture of two more of the gaug, bat Julian Cook and his brother, the prisoners, told an interesting tale. ulian says that he and Eddie Wilson had been sleeping for over a month under Sooullar's tin shop on a mattroas that had been thrown out of a colonist car. They sold papers at night and made enough out of that to buy Borne soup at a restaurant. Julian did not just remember having stolen anything lately, bi.t he might have. There were two other boys named Harry and Jim.

lie did not know their other names, but they were brothers. They did the most of the stealing. The chap called Harry never had less than 75c. He sometimes got a loaf of bread and five cents worth of butter and divided with the other boys. Julian had left home because his father said he had to carry in wood or live on bread and butter.

He went to work for a tailor on Carrall street on the understanding that he was to learn the trade, but the man set him to cut wood and he told him that he did not intend to learn the tailoring over the saw buck and quit. Wilson left home because his mother would not let him go to the Baptist picnic. Julian was sent home but the elder boy was held till to morrow. This occurred in Vancouver, not in Whitechapol, London, nor in the slums of New York. Something New, Sheriff Patterson has in his time run hotels, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, real estate offices and commission houses, but yesterday ho got a real surprise when asked to take possession of a sporting house.

Ho thought that that was taxing his versatility to the utmost. The house seized, known as the Mansfield, is the largest on the street and is said to be superbly furnished. The suit was brought at tho instigation of a well known citizen under a chattel mortgage, originally drawn for 2,200, on which there was a balance due. The landlady informed the sheriff that there was a transaction involved which in reality made a balauce due her. She paid half the amount due at once, so that the sheriff was saved learning the tariff of a business which, though practically licensed and tacitly allowed to acquire vested rights in this city, is not taught in the ordinary run of commercial colleges.

Thirty on the Haces. On Monday afternoon the finish of the race for gentlemen's drivers was made. This event excited considerable interest because of the horses remaining in, White Wines and J. J. being so nearly matched, and not a few bets were made on the result.

J. J. W. won the first heat by 2:46, but having made a gaining break the judges declared the race a tie. In the next try J.

J. VV. led all the way, making a beautiful down to business trot. Ho therefore wins the handsome cup previously described. In the expressmen's race, four prizes, the winners, in order were: W.

I. Marshall's Black Doc, H. McConvie's Kicking Bob, J. Campbell's Deception, McDon ald Bros. Toney.

In a half mile dash for $100 a side J. Lloyd Jack the Kipper was defeated by J. Miller's Seal. Masonic Honor It has been decided to have the eorner stone of the new First Prosbyterian church laid with Masonic honors. The ceremony it is expected will take place in about a fortnight.
