Amtrak (Continued From Page 1) passenger railroad service for northern Iowa. At present, a train from Amtrak, the national rail passenger corporation runs along Burlington Northern Railroad tracks through such southern Iowa communities as Burlington. Ottumwa and Creston. A Sante Fe Railroad train visits only Fort Madison in Iowa. The Chicago and North Western railway extends through Clinton. Cedar Rapids, Ames and Council Bluffs. "I have no doubt that they had 70,000 names." said Del VanHorn of Jefferson, director of the Development Commission. "Carroll made a very active thing of it." with coupons and advertisements in newspapers urging support of the petition. The campaign for public support reportedly extended to 100 newspapers and scores of "colleges and Chambers of Commerce. "They (Dr. Lind and Keith) had sacks and sacks of petitions." Van Horn stressed that the proposed service would "in no way be a substitute for the southern route that is already in effect. That was the first question I asked when I heard of the campaign." The proposed route of two trains, the City of Los Angeles and the City of Portland, would extend from Chicago to Oregon and southern California via Iowa. Amtrak planners and officials from the Department of Transportation told the lowans the criteria the transportation secretary will use in selecting the 1974 Amtrak experimental route and how they might bring pressure in support of their bid. Keith and Lind brought with them 70,000 positive responses to a newspaper questionnaire on the popularity of their proposed route from Chicago, through central Iowa dand Nebraska and later branching to Portland, Ore., and Los Angeles. Amtrak officials called that a "good response" but noted that the residents were asked if they would support such a . route "in the middle of the fuel crunch." "We gave them some guidance on how you go about getting a.designationJor an experimental route," one planner said. He also pointed out that "we've got a series of hot routes' 1 for which considerable pressure from local governments, congressional delegations and business-interests has been applied already. Some of those proposals- partly overlap the lowans' route - for example, a Portland-to-Ogden, Utah one and a Los Angeles-Ogden run. • Prizes (Continued From Page 1) entertainment during the meal. A sanitation committee will be in charge of taking down directional signs afterwards. All cash collected from the walk-a-thon is due at the Commercial Savings Bank by May 11. Walkers will receive envelopes to leave at the banks for personnel tototal. Proceeds from the walk-a-thon will be applied towards lung research. The three are Kathryn Zenz, 28, Lancaster, Wis., Jo Ann Marie McDonald, 28, Coos Bay, Ore., and Robert Hubbard, Los Angeles, Calif. Miss Zenz is a graduate of Mercy Medical Center of Nursing in Dubuque. The three were charged with smuggling 219 pounds of hashish into Turkey in 1972. They were originally sentenced to death, but that sentence was reduced to life imprisonment. The women say they were recruited by Hubbard to drive mini-buses thought to contain tourist items to Germany and were not aware hashish was concealed in the roofs of the vans.
