4 DAILY WORLD, VANCOUVER, B. CANADA. Saturday, July 19, 18S0 STUPENDOUS SUBLIMITY. THE H. T.

CEPERLEY SX7CCESSOH TO Dll llei! iy, RfJ 88 1 CEPERLEY gorges. We wind round the edge of cliffs, through tunnels, over mountains and under crags, until one almost grows dizzy watching the tortuous path of the locomotive, the turbulent rush of the muddy river and the changing scene of the lofty hills. It is the monotony of sublimity. It is a race down the gorge oi grandeur. From every point of the two hundred miles and more which we thus run down the gorge of the river the scene is sublimely grand.

Many particular views linger in my memory to rise up iu after days as bright, inspiring recollections of my trip through the Rocky Mountains by the C. P. R. Three general impressions are all that I have time to record just now. There may be more by and bye.

Engineering feats, mining localities, social views are all swallowed up for tiie present iu the impression of stupendous sublimity. A Successful Half Vcar. C. THE MODERN TYRE. The shipping intelligence published in another column, unmistakably demonstrates Vancouver's growth as 4 shipping and commercial centre. Never before in the history of British Columbia were there so many ocean going vessels in port as are to be seen in our harbor at this moment. The incident presages what is in store for the Modern Tyre of the North Pacific.

Vancouver is not envious or jealous of her rivals. All she claims is a fair field and no favors, aud in a few years the prophesy given utterance to by Mr. Van Home in 1SS4 that Vancouver would lieconie second only to San Francisco on the Pacific Coast will be fully verified. Let Vancouver flourish, should be the motto of every true citizen within its rders. PERSONALS.

VANCOUVER JOSEPHINE ItOMINIOiV DAY AM) WEliK BAIIGAINS A PEN PICTURE Of tho (ilorloM or tho seonio Woiiilc Ixtwoi'U CalKiiry ami ViiiH'Oiivcr. Rev. C. B. Pitblado, who was recently with us, and delighted many of our citizens i by his impassioned appeals, has been writing a series of letters, descriptive of his travels, to the Halifax Herald.

The last is dated, "On the train in the Rockies, July 1st," and is incomparably the most beautiful pen picture of the mountain glories of British Columbia that has ever Ken written. We reproduce it in full: We reached Calgary just as the dawning day was lighting up the easteiu sky. We knew we were near the foot of the Rocky i Mountains, and began to peer through tho darkness for the shadows of the mighty giants of these everlasting hills. The farmers from Ontario left us at this point. Hence forth we would see little to remind us of grazing facilities or wheat lields, or anything of an agricultural nature, so that they may as well go.

After more than a thoti uiiinl toiled ot nriiirll. where the whole talk had been of soil and seed, cattle and rains, frost and wheat, railroads and towns aud cities, we come into the region where the utilitarian purposes of life seem to be swallowed up iu the grandeur of its scenery. Mere farmers have little use for the majestic scenery of the Rocky Mountains. These vast prairies belong to the prose of business; these IniL'e mountains belong to the poetry of life. "As the day dawned we saw the shadows of the Rocky Mountains looming up against the sky, with the stars here and tliere glimmering like diamonds on their brow.

We saw the streak of sunshine touch their snowy peaks, and show like rellections of HKAVKNI.Y CI.OKV I against the sky. Slowly the light descended, disclosing the dark rf.cky sides and the for est covered bases of the giant mountains. We watched them becoming visible until i they were bathed in sunshine and stood out great, gaunt and clear under as blue a sky as ever the eye beheld and in as pure an atmosphere as ever men breathed. whirled along the Row river, whose pure waters seemed here to gush and sparkle with delight as they rushed in fury past us, or there spread out into a quiet pool or lake to rest and make a great placid mirror iu which 1.1.,.. .1...

tmiiint.iin ne.lks. with snow in the crevices, jagged dill's on the sides, and trees on the base were all clearly reflected. We feel now that we arc in the country of mountains. It is vastness that is the idea that lays hold upon us. The mountains are large but they are not huddled together; they have risen out of a country that atl'ords them plenty of space, each to stand alone and exhibit his giant form.

And these various forms are so different one gets bewildered trying to catch their distinct individuality. No two are exactly alike, tho' features of agreement can be seen. There could scarcely be a greater contrast imagined than the appearance of the scenery on tho prairies and in the mountains. The one is unchanging monotony the other is an ever changing panorama. The one is the sea in a calm; the other is an ocean iu a hurricane congealed with solidity.

On one side v.e try to catch the characteristic forms of the huge rocks that rise up in terrible grandeur before us. Here it is the gnat rounded (b.me with curving lines of beauty; there it is thecastelled terrace varying into the shapes of impregnable fortresses or' spired cathedral; yonder it is a diamond peak that seems to cut the heaven with its sharp points. Again, it is a serrated ridge that is ready to saw the clouds asunder; elsewhere it is jagged dills or tho broken uplifted edge of a great strata that by some mighty force has been raised and twisted and broken to make crags and chasms as a part of the sublime scenery with which nature here seems to amuse herself; and again we have the palisades and amphitheatres aud crowned tops and pinnacles which suggest traditions ot great assemblies and mighty giants who laid out this great pleasure ground of sublime wonders. After wind mg in and out and around these lofty peaks for hundreds of miles one begins to think of other MOCNTAIS HI T.NK.S with which to compare them. Tho great nasses and mountain peaks of the Alps come before us.

We have nothing but glorious memories in our recollection of Alpine scenery. It has an attractiveness all its own and the hunizer for a feast of its sub limities often takes possession of our soul, But the vastness of this mountain scenery is what strikes us. Here are dozens of Righis. We have already seen four or live Mount Blancs. We have passed several I Simplou passes.

We have seen a mountain whose base would cover the whole of Swit zerland. And so wo go whirling along through measureless piles of mountains, crags, passes and rocky wonders. We fairly revel in the superabundance of hugeness and sublimity. We are glad that tho train moves slowly through tho Kicking Horse. Pass.

It gives us time to take in some thing of the terrible grandeur of the scene, the great mountain cliffs rising thousands of feet above you, tho train clinging to the face of the dill' and slowly winding its way forward; tho stream of water gushing a white thread of foam in the gorge a thousand feet below you, and rocky nioun tain peaks and snow clad pinnacles and glaciers all around form a scene of grand sublimity that cannot be surpassed the wide world. If you can measure grandeur and sublimity by the square mile or the lineal foot, there is more of it in view of this C.P.R. route than any road I have yet travelled, and I havo crossed the continent by three other lines. At this point I stopped writing on the train. We ere at Gulden and passed through the first range of mountains ou our journey.

It seemed useless to write. It was a glut of grandeur. A perfect sritVKIT OK S111I.IMITV, what could I do but give myself up to looking and watching and admiring. Here now I try to recall the impressions left on my memory. The whole journey is an ever changing panorama of gigantic mountain scenery.

As I look back the picture divides itself into three great parts. The tirst from about Calgary to Donald. This part of the journey leaves on my mind the impression of sublime irregularity. The forms of the mountains, the appearance of the cliffs, the gorges, the different points of pas seem to have no peculiar type or characteristic. Each object seems to assume a distinct form its own.

It is the arrangement of independence. It is the sublimity of variety. And so much of it, that whilst one is pleased, overawed and inspired, he is often bewildered and overpowered in the attempt to take it in. Then, say, from Donald to Kamloops, we have outlines of regularity. The Selkirk Range of mountains are regular, with the curving lines of beauty and streaks of sparkling snow and green verdure striping their sides ith lovely, blending shades; whilst the streams we cross gush with a laughing, frolicing bound, rather than in fury, or sweep gently through valleys, rather than mountain gorges, into calm, clear, emerald colored lakes.

Here it is that the lake scenery of the North of England and Scotland and Italy is reproduced on an almost measureless scale. nat placid mirrors these lakes make 1 How beautiful the reflection of tho curving lines of hillsides, the green forest trees, the snow clad peaks, the clear blue sky, and the tremor anil glimmer of the water giving a living motion to the whole picture! It is the loveliness of mingled mountain and water scenery on a magnificent scale; it is the sublimity of beauty. A LOVKLV VIST A. Then there is the journey from Kamloops to Harrison or farther. It is through a mighty mountain pass.

It is the Simplon pass of the Alps magnilied many times. Wo are beside the great Thompson river and it runs into the turbulent Eraser, and we run on the face of the precipices that hem in their aters. The rolling, tossing Hood has cloven its way through tiie mighty 1 OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE CITY SATURDAY. JULY 19. 1890 CITY AND COUNTRY ITEMS Mathison, The Printer.
