complaint the sheriff's department hired two women deputies earlier this month and planned to hire two or four more The complaint charged that the hiring of additional white women would "aggravate and perpetuate the racially disproportionate composition of the sheriff's department" The National Association for the Advancbment of Colored People (NAACP) has presented its national community achievement award to Mrs James Carney who has been a leader in minority and youth affairs in the Sacramento area for years The native Alabaman first became involved in community affairs by serving on the Sacramento City Unified School District's citizens' advisory committee after moving to the city in 1949 She has served as a volunteer counselor in the Grant Union High School District and she has held many offices in the Oak Park Community Council including the presidency The Sacramento High School graduate has served as chairman of Outward Bound an educational opportunity program at the University of California at Davis She also has been a member of the advisory group of Operation Breakthrough and she hai been active in YWCA affairs A number of years ago she helped form the Oak Park
