group of children in New York clustering round a curbside hot dog vendor It is this kind of divergence (the cleanliness "The French Connection" directed by William Friedkin written by Ernest Tldvman from a novel bv Robin Moore music bv Don Ellis with Gene Hackman Fernando Rev Rov Scheider Tony LoBanco Marcel Bozzuffl Frederic De Pasquale and Bill Hickman Alhambra By Andrew Gale "The French Connection" which will open Wednesday at the Alhambra Theater is often so exciting that any quibbling over other aspects of the film seems trivial since viscerally it's such a humdinger: it sweeps along so expertly that any attempt at resisting its propulsion might cause a viewer an uncomfortable and perplexing derailment and I use the word derailment deliberately for "The French Connection" contains a chase between a man in a car and a fugitive on a New York City elevated trin that is so riveting it may have you out of your seat and reaching for the emergency cord "The French Connection" is a drug movie with a difference for this time it's not the woes of addiction which are being photogenically documented in wide screen and color rather "The French Connection" tackles the network of illegal drug distribution from a lovely villa near Marseilles France (where Fernando Rey lavishly keeps a very young mis-stress) to a shadowy New York City bar where narcotics police confront drug users with action as brutal as the language they both employ The suave Mister Big from France (Rey) juxtaposed with two sweaty New York cops (Gene Hack-man and Roy Scheider) makes for an effectively queasy combination which director William Friedkin exploits right from the start when a scene of a gentleman 'in France after nonchalant- ed aspect Daughter Debbie a 17-year-old John Kennedy High School beauty is Miss Sacramento Yachting 1972 and she is scheduled to compete in the Miss Yachting 1972 contest at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marin County early in January Hilliard likes racing in a different mode He uses the wind to push his boat along and he has been so successful the Richmond Yacht Club awarded him a trophy Hilliard races a 26-foot Gladiator class sloop named Carina "We had the best start" Hilliard said "and sailed from Richmond to the St Francis Yacht Club buoy and back and no one was even close to us at the finish It was the first time I ever had to be careful finding the next mark Most of the other boats used jennys (a large sail used forward of the mast) and they never wanted to use working jibs like mine" Hilliard's trophy is the Richmond Yacht Club One-Design Perpetual Gladiator Trophy That is a mouthful of words for a trophy and Hilliard will have to race for the trophy again next year to keep it The Barricks sought another kind of answer to the call of the sea one which is far from the sound of the surf So they are cruising in their four-ton Columbia 28 Spartacus to Mexico to Central America and on to the Caribbean The Barricks plan a year's voyage and maybe longer if long-range cruising strongly appeals to them Sacramentans live along two great rivers and when they go down to the sea in ships they do it with an individual flair Sacramentans Ruben Dob-bert Ed Hilliard and Jim and Monna Barrick each have heard the siren call of the sea and they have answered that call in individual ways Dobbert commodore of the Northern California Cruiser Association heeded the call as a member of an organization devoted to two types of powerboat sport: Predicted log and over-the-bottom racing The cruiser association is composed of 30 yacht clubs with more than 400 racing members who are interested in learning the intricacies of wind tide current and the complex personalities of their boats To do this they attempt to navigate a prescribed run over a course without error Dobbert describes the two methods: In predicted log racing the skipper sets the engine rpm in advance and then runs the five-legged course Checkers are aboard to total the errors In over-the-bottom racing the skipper states the times he will arrive at certain marks But the checkers are at points unknown to the racer It may sound easy and it was easy for Dobbert in the first race He won but it took three years for him to get back into the money Dobbert enjoys the fun of racing and the comradeship of belonging to an active boating organization Dob-bert's selection as commodore is a significant achievement for the Sacramento Yacht Club and delta boatmen He is the first up-river boatman to be elevated to that top post The Dobbert family it noted in another boating relat- Your Car keeps you alert for every line and makes you suspicious of every man who walks in front of the camera In a movie so well put together as this and so innocent of socially redeeming pretensions the ambiguous gunshot which is fired at the end is a flaw if only a minor one Go to "The French Connection" for edge of the seat entertainment but don't expect any moral to rationalize your fun It's a rip-roaring bloody bash of a movie and it needs no messa-gizing to justify its existence JayRob Extends Current Run Of Double Bill JayRob Productions has extended through Jan 8 the holds many surprises and even Santa Claus is not who you think he is Acute dialogue reinforces this: "Didn't I see you" says Hickman "picking your feet in Poughkeepsie?"
