him outside but he reached across the plate and hit a cannonball at me I caught it on the first hop but it turned me all the way around" Ford who was quite a pitcher himself speaks with reverence of Walter Johnson "There was no meanness in him" said Russ "He could have made all the players fear him if he had wanted to It was wicked to stand lip there at the plate and see his sidearm coming all that speed behind it But he never threw at a batter in his life "However I recall a time when he acciOentally hit a man in the head and I taought that was surely the end of the poor devil "We were playing Washington at the old Highlander park at 168th Street a Broadway In 1911 The grandstand had only one deck to It It was about as high as the first deck In Yankee Stadium "Bert Daniels a former football player who was as hard as nails was batting for us Johnson lost control of a fast ball and struck Daniels in the head Ile fell like he was dead and the ball bounced on over the grandstand "Daniels lay there as still as death for a lew minutes thert he leaped to his feet and shouted to Johnson 'Put something on the ball you big Until this day I don't know how a human head could have absorbed such a blow" Russ Ford was born in Canada 76 years ago But Rockingham has more or less been his home since 1922 Just a few months ago he moved into Room 208 of the Rockingham Hotel (which he once owned) and he says he wiil spend the rest of his days here It is a small room a small town a small woril for a man who has such a history behind him But he never gets lonesome Memories are fine Highlanders in 1910 Russ Ford won 26 games and lost only six It still stands as the best record any rookie pitcher has ever chalked up in the big leagues He finished all 26 games that he won and finished four of the six games that he lost He won 15 of his first 16 starts in a sensational get-away Ford won 22 games for the Highlanders in 1911 collected 13 wins in 1912 and posted 11 ictories for a last place club in 1913 He switched to the Federal League in 1914 and won 21 games against six losses for Buffalo He closed out his major league career in 1915 winning five games and losing nine for Buffalo He returned to the minor leagues and post brilliant records but the American League would never accept him back his 21-6 record at Buffalo in 1914 was the best turned in by a major league hurler that season Ills team finished sixth lie is 76 years old now and lives at Rockingham His wife the former Mary Hunter Bethel of Reidsville died in 1957 He has two daughters Mrs William Carson Brennan of New York City and Mrs Frederick Nies of Chapel Hill BATTER Ford hands bat to young friend Elizabeth Sechriest age two and onehalf of Chapel Hill The former 'Russ I never hurt anybody 1kho hasn't first tired to hurt me' ''But there was one man Charlie Schmidt a catcher for Detroit who was forever flieding with Ty This was back in 1908 I was playing for Atlanta and Detroit was doing its spring training there "I was having supper with Schmidt and he placed his order and then was called to the telephone Cobb Iv had planned the whole thing walked in sat down and ate Charlie's meal while the man he had paid to do It kept Schmidt tied up on phone 'When Charlie came back to the table Ty was Fitting there licking his chops Schmidt did' n't say a word but I knew he was smoking "When Ty left he told rue 'As soon as I get him out of Georgia I'm going to break him to pieces I'm afraid to tackle him now for two reasons a minor and he might be carrying a gun' "This Schmidt was some man Ile had muscles in his eyebrows Sure enough the Tigers stopped off at Birmingham a few days later for an exhibition game and he worked Ty over Some of the Detroit players were telling me about it "They said Charlie just walked over to where Ty was sitting in the dressing room picked him up and slammed him on the board floor three times And they said for the first and only time in his life they heard Ty say 'I'm licked' "But two years later I was talking to Schmidt about it and he told me 'Russ that's the gamest little rooster that ever lived I almost killed him but I know he'd fight me now without a second's if I crossed him' Ford places Cobb in a class of his own as a ball player but for sheer batting power he never saw the equal of Sam Crawford "My brother Gene went to the big leagues a couple of years before me" said Russ "and he warned me about Crawford 'The ball will hardly stand what he gives it' Gene told me I always pitched Sam outside and our second baseman Earl Gardner would dig himself a toe-hold and get ready for the shock 'But I said the wrong thing to Sam one day and I think he tried to kill me for it Ile and Cobb were the bitterest of enemies "I thr ew him one that didn't get far enough outside and he slammed a vicious liner back toward the mound It caught me on the right foot and the pain was terrific but I managed to recover It and throw him out "It made him real mad and he shouted something to me as he started back toward the dugout I went over close to him and I said 'Sam you're getting 41 vs 11:: g--- 14 1k ct You I Of: for LI 'Ft I 6 i 6N mil puil
