Saturday night he was "upset" that postponement had not been an-flounced earlier The postponement came late to prevent dissolution of a limited partnership to save the speedway from auction The partnership however Smith promised that if the required $600000 hadn't been raised by Friday night all the $5000 shares would be returned The partnership had raised $250000 by Friday night it was The thesis demanded an explanation She had it Interesting here it is: I have been surprised that spending the $250 is such a problem As the mother of two young children I have been concerned for a long time about providing my family with a fallout shelter "But now with the money to begin such provisions I have considered the issue more seriously and have decided against the project "Our children learn from us basic concepts and I do not choose to confront them with a testimonial of anxiety or suspicion of man's morality I think it is important for us to believe in and pursue what is good in man to teach our children that life is a great gift and glory I want my children to learn to fill their lives with beauty and love and to that end I intend to spend this money on a piano and piano lessons for us all Mrs Whisnant thus propounds a noble admirable and altogether courageous purpose one which elevates the fight against fear Yet it's only half of a great debate I do not wish to be unkind or to debase Mrs Whisnant's thesis Pianos are fine So are fiddles But Nero had one leen Whisnant's PrizeWinning KayS ilarY closely at Papa's giassy orb mid sighed: "Well Don at least he's still in there!" epidemic of grass and woods fires generated by dry weather and carelessness hit its climax Saturday when six fires were reported They brought to 25 the number of grass fires in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County last week Ten have been in the city and 15 in the county There has been no heavy loss of property Probably the biggest expense has been to county volunteer fire departments and the city department They estimate the cost of putting out a brush or woods fire at from $25 to $50 The number of grass fires has been increasing since a bit of summer not knowing it a October came in about three weeks ago It has been hot and dry and volunteer fire chiefs such as Mack Hunter "thank the Lord" that botanical conditions have not caused the largest portion of tree leaves to fall "Grass is bad enough leaves and grass are worse" the chief of the Wilkinson Boulevard Volunteer Fire Department said "Honest I've never seen it so dry" His department has fought two grass fires this week Both started from burning trash Both could have been avoided Hunter said if the trash burners had guarded their fires Hunter and the other members of volunteer fire departments in the county are handicapped by the lack of fire hydrants something with which the city is dotted They're also handicapped by more vacant land "One spark and the field's gone" Hunter said They can do nothing about the second handicap but have done much about the first Most volunteer fire units are equipped with tank truck 8 which can move across ough terrain If the tire's in a place where the trucks can't go a rare oc offence it is beaten out with broom-like tools The volunteer chiefs blame the fires on carelessness and a that most grass fires can be pre vented They suggest several ways to avoid them: Watch out for matches in the hands of children Don't throw lighted cigars or cigarettes front an automobile When burning trash watch the fire When burning fields build See 'EPIDEMIC Page IfiC By JOHN DeMOTT
