4-F THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Suncray May 17 1939 Ernie Shore Relieved Ruth Threw 5 Wannup Tosses Spun Perfect Game Courthouse shortly after noon one day this week dropped his tired body Into a big chair and expressed his feelings In one word: "Whew S1 l''''' '44 4 0:1: 1: i 4 4 KA i ir '46k fi: ::5 :0" 1 kirtokt 'AWt vow :4 4 'tt iii 1 "i' 44- tfik i4 :::::::::::::1: 1 07 ir II 41 1- 4- 1A 2''' Cr 04 t-4 I 1: 1 is' the sheriff of Forsyth He has held his office for 23 years a distinction in itself but Ernie Shore Is better known for another feat he once per rarest in baseball the perfectly pitched game He came puffing into his office in the Forsyth County By HERMAN HELMS Observer Sports Writer WINSTO N-SALEM He would stand out in any crowd At 6-4 he towers over most men He has exceptionally large hands and a head capped with snow which he hides a good part of the time under a big hat He looks the part of exactly what he is sheriff ural hitter I ever saw He once hit a ball that went be tween my legs and didn't hit the ground until after it passed second base All of his hits were line shots If he had learned to elevate them like Ruth no telling how many home runs he would have hit" Individuals like Ty Cobb "He was high-strung but there was nothing unfair about the man He was as clean a ball player as there was until you played dirty with him The Sheriff will tell you frankly that he did not condone some of the Babe's off-the-field habits "but he was all business at the ball park And what a heart he had in him "I think he was the most confident man I ever knew Lots of times I've seen him make a bet with the opposition before a game Just competing with them out there on the field wasn't enough for him "I remember him making a bet with Ty Cobb ore a game he pitched against Detroit They didn't put up much money but there couldn't have been any more fire in their eyes if their lives had been at stake Babe won it big strik ing out the side in the ninth" Individuals like Shoeless Joe Jackson "He was the best nat not in the perfect game against Washington but in whipping Detroit 1-0 on six hits in a 12 inning struggle which clinched the pennant for the Red Sox in 1915 But the perfect game was the makings of him and he is still receiving the rewards from it and for this he is most grateful Not long ago they built a ball park here and they named it "Ernie Shore Field" If anything it was a greater thrill than pitching than final against Washington in 1917 A piece of ground and a piece of history Put them together and they tell his story this snow-capped guy who has lived his life in the path of a good fast ball straight down the middle "Then ho was like a dog gone bumblebee If you dusted him off he'd drag a bunt down the line draw you Into his path and cut you up" ILION ARRISON i- svr 0 i ly ib if -s 01 ti it ERNIE SHORE The Sheriff Of Forsyth The Sheriff insists that he did his finest piece of pitching Observer Sports Editor The Sheriff Won 20 Games In 1915 There Are Many Ways To Lose Scalzi Knows 'Ent All BY his own admission Charleston White Sox man ager Frank (Skeeter) Scalzi is a character 'But I don't mind" the peppery little skipper says "as long as they like me" In the first month of the Sally League season Charleston fans have had little to cheer about except Scalzi He keeps them excited Hardly a game goes by that Skeeter doesn't stick his face against an umpire's chest protector to voice a protest In one recent game by actual count Skeeter made nine tr12s to home plate for conversatito with the 4-- r1 0 r1-41 A 4 '41- Giants Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees He spent four seasons with the Red Sox winning 10 games in 1941 20 in 1915 18 in 1916 and 13 in 1917 He pitched in four World Series games working the opener against Philadelphia in 1915 and hurling the Inaugural against Brooklyn in 1916 He broke in with the Giants in 1912 but was used sparingly by John McGraw "McGraw never developed a ball player in his life" he contends "You were either an established player when you joined his team or there was no place on it for you" He tore a ligament in his arm late in 1917 tried to put too much on a curveball against Bobby Roth of and that Injury was later to cut short his career Hubert (Dutch) Leonard George Foster and Babe Ruth 41 Lam RED SOX four pitchers anchored the Boston pitching staff from 1914-1917 Left to right are Ernie Short Beaver Wins MP Bogey ''This heat plus federal court and all the work I've got to do here in the office is a heckuva battle for one fellow" he grunted The Sheriff had company a fellow from out of town who wanted to talk baseball And it was only proper that the starting point in the conversation should be a game that took place on June 21 1917 at Boston when storied performer named Babe Ruth lost his temper got himself expelled from the playing field and a lean piece of flesh and bone named Ernie Shore without so much as a handshake with the catcher was rushed in to fill i place on the mound The Sheriff is not a bragging man but who wouldn't want to talk about a perfect baseball game? "Babe had a 3-2 count on the batter a fellow Morgan of Washington" he bega and already the fatigue was starting to fade from his face "He cocked that left arm of his and threw one that was pretty near to the plate but the umpire said ball four and Babe blew sky high "I've seen the story printed that Ruth hit him but there's no truth to that He made out like he wanted to hit him but a gang of us held him back and the umpire told him to get outta the park "Bill Carrigan was managing our club (the Red Sox) and he said to rue 'You'll have to take over' "I walked back to the dugout got my glove and went to work They gave me five warm-up pitches that was the limit for a relief pitcher in those days and then I faced my first 'batter "I guess Morgan figured I wouldn't be bearing down much coming in so cold and he let out for second base on the first pitch The throw from the catcher beat him two feet and they got no more men on base" He struck out only two Senators over the course of the historic game but it has been reported many times and the Sheriff vouches for the fact that Washington never got a real healthy piece of any of his pitches He wouldn't kid you this snow-capped guy who has lived his life in the path of a good fast ball straight down the middle He knew he was working on something big but he says the real impact of it didn't hit him "until Just before I went out for the ninth inning "Somebody on the bench said 'Do you realize they haven't had a single man on base since that first one Ruth walked? got to studying about it then but I guess the thing that kept me from getting my nerves all wound up was the fact that we were leading by 4-0 and I knew we had it won" "With one out John Henry their catcher hit the only hard ball they managed all day but it was a shot straight at our leftfielder Duffy Lewis "Then they brought in Mike Minosky who was an expert at drag bunting to bat for the pitcher He dragged one that got past me but our second baseman Jack Barry picked it up with his bare hand and threw him out" Thomason A Barber Jr Rudy Mansfield and Jack Open Qualifying Set Burns Beaver shot a 66 to cap ture the yers Park Country Club blind bogey prize Saturday Other winners at 71 were Archie Chrroll Dave Truax Clyde Whitesides Jack Martin Meacham Fr ank Timberlake Bill Corbin and Ben Fyre Winners with 75's were Bruce Cotton Dewey Gibson Bob An chie Carroll Dave Truax Clyde Whitesides Jack Martin Meacham Fr a nk Timberlake Bill Corbin and Ben Fyre Winners with 75's were Bruce Cotton Dewey Gibson Bob An At Pinehurst Monday Hoosier Ace Winner INGLEWOOD Calif VI Hillsdrile the Indiana favorite returned to the races Saturday with a smashing victory in the $55350 Los Angeles Handicap at gerstadt Herb Harrelson A Hollywood Park An umpire baiter? "That doesn't sound too good" Scalzi says "but I guess that's about right" Right now Skeeter isn't too happy His Chasox are in the cellar and getting him to talk when his club Is on the short end of the scoreboard is tougher than cracking a gator's Jaw "I'm a lousy loser" he admits After a recent disastrous road trip he remarked: "We lost ball games in more ways than a country boy can come to town and that's a lot of ways" His Ambition Is To Hell) Kids IT'S the first visit for the Chasox to Griffith Park this year but the field is not strange to Skeeter He managed Fayetteville of the old Tri-State loop in 1948 "I see they've moved the fence in some but the park still looks fine" he says How is Charleston liking his club?
