Deacons from Wake Forest shook off Death Valley's kiss of doom and stunned Clemson 17-13 in one of Saturday's major football upsets of nation The victory broke a 10-game winning skein the Tigers have held over the Deacs and also snapped a seven-game losing streak for Wake The Deacs also set some other records It was a well-knit and inspired defense which did the job for the Deacs hitting their conversion (first In Wake history) for the victory margin after blocking a Clemson conversion That was the story of an unbelievable day of football Clemson was below par and a magnificent Wake defense never let the Tigers hit their stride There were always white jerseys blocking orange jerseys at critical moments The pattern of the game was cut early when the Deacons moved 64 yards with the opening kickoff only to lose it on the Clemson 18 by a fumble The Tigers could not move even when aided by a roughing penalty against Wake Another 15-yard penalty helped Clemson's seet3d drive but again the Deaes held and Lon Armstrong's field goat try from the Wake 20 was wide After a scoreless first quarter Clemson finally rolled 80 yards to open the second period aided by another damaging 15-yard penalty against the Deacs Quarterback Jim Parker tagged Elmo Lam in open for 26 yards and then Tommy King for 14 and the touchdown It was King's first catch against Wake FOreat in three years Armstrong converted a Clemson led 7-0 with 7:15 left in the second period It a a Armstrong's 23rd straight conversion Undaunted the Deacs roared back Donnie Frederick ripped off 25 yards and Winston Futch whipped end for 11 Another penalty stalled the Deacs and Mickey Walker kicked a field goal from the 17 with 3:28 left That's the way it stood at halftime 7-3 Most of the crowd of 26000 felt sure the second half would bring a deluge But It never came Wake took the second half kickoff and promptly and smartly marched 59 yards to score Quarterback Chuck Rei ley tagged end Bill Hull with a 16-yarder first pass the tall basketball-football star a caught this year and then with another for 22 After Hull dropped one in the end zone Bei ley found Bill Ruby in the same spot with a 11-yarder Tech ushered Duke out of the unbeaten ranks 21-0 Saturday with a vicious second half assault A sturdy Tech defense extracted all the punch from the Duke attack and merely waited until its own offense could overwhelm the Blue Devils They finally got around to that chore in the second half after the two teams battled to a scoreless deadlock in first 30 minutes But once Tech finally did get the taste of Duke blood In the third quarter it went back for more scoring twice in a wild fourth quarter and having two other scores wiped off the books by penalties The figures show what a complete wrecking job Tech's defense did on the Duke attack On only two occasions did Duke get past the 50 yard line one of those penetrating as far as the Tech 37 in the game's early moments That was as close to the Sports writer COLLEGE A It Md North Carolina recovered four fumbles two by Maryland and two of its own to erase the Terps from the nations unbeaten roster Saturday afternoon 14-8 Maryland trying to protect its glistening new ranking as nation's No 10 team couldn't cope with a ball made slippery by a driving rain and a Carolina team that decided to play football It was an afternoon of mistakes most of which could be traced to the slimy field but it was Maryland that made the most injurious miscues and Carolina that I not waste its chances The Tar Heels broke up a scoreless struggle early in the third period with a fumble recovery on the Terp 19 Halfback Gib Carson made 18 of the yards on four carries but fumbled when he slammed into the end zone An alert Lenny Beck did a swan dive on the ball however to claim it for the touchdown On their very next series the Terps fumbled again with the ever-present Beck grabbing this one for UNC on the Maryland 16 Fullback Bob Elliott made three crunches good for eight yards to the Terp eight and Carson turned right end to reach the goal line But the halfback who had a heroic 100 yards for 27 tries during the sodden afternoon lost the ball when tackled Ray Farris was the retreiver this time pouncing on the bounding ball for the TD After Elliott had kicked his second conversion to give the Tar Heels a healthy 14-0 lead it was Carolina's turn to have trouble with the slippery ball Elliott couldn't hold it on UNC's next scrimmage play and end Gary Collins recovered for Maryland on the Tar Heel 31 A 28-yard pass Dick Novak to Collins put the Terps on the UNC three Fullback Bob Burton scored from there The Terrapins who are used to winning close ones in the final seconds set themselves up for a good chance by passing for a two-point conversion This meant that Maryland could bounce into a tie with another touchdown and duplicate last week's one-point win over Syracuse with a placement point But the Tar Heels were that close to atoning somewhat last week's miserable showing against Clemson and they weren't about to let this one slip away After Maryland had scored two plays before the end of the third period Jim Hickey's troops threw up a defensive blanket that stopped the Terps cold and completely See 10111-RANKED Pg 98 Here's What's Inside Charlotte's second annual National '400 gets under way today at Saturday As things turned out Duke did not complete a pass until only 12:25 remained in game and Tech owned a 14-0 lead Once coach Bobby Dodd's forces found a way to penetrate the Duke defense in the second half they engaged in a game of keep away with the Blue Devils Duke had the football only five times during the final 30 minutes Halfback Chick Graning and quarterback Stan Gann were the brightest stars in the second half push Overall Gann completed seven of 13 passes for 74 yards and added another 43 on infantry maneuvers Graning as fast as loose quicksilver squirted through Duke in his own end zone but Duke was called for illegal procedure and was forced to kick again It was the first of a number of controversial calls by the officials Before anyone gets the idea the officiating was one sided however it should be mentioned that a score was taken away from Tech when an official unintentionally blew his whistle That one came early in the fourth quarter when Auer intercepted a Walt Rappold pass and raced 25 yards into the end zone After much discussion the officials put the ball at the 18 The referee told Tech See TECIT Page 68 Cot 8 0e-Okt AIN Statistics Ga
