Swelling Buds May Be Nipped By CLYDE OSBORNE Observer Rural Life Editor Carolinas peach growers etnssed their fingers Tuesday and watched helplessly in almy weather as the uds on their fruit tries continued to swell It was a situation which could belcome critical 'even wipe out the 1961 crop of peaches if an other cold March such as was encountered in 1960 materializes Blooms and young fruit are high to cold damage Cherokee County Farm Agent Lee said that "Peach trees are ready to bloom And it's three weeks to the normal date for full bloom" Montgomery County Agri4ultura1 Agent Austin Garriss reported the same situation and added: "We hope we're not going to have any more seriously cold weather" Both agents reported that growers weren't talking much were just hoping And a note of optimism among the peachmen might be pegged on the last 30-day forecast from the weatherman issued February 15 It called for higher than normal temperatures through March 15 the approximate date of the lasl killing frost or cold for this region But a new 30-day forecast will be issued today If it sees con tinued warmer than normal temperatures throughout there'll be cheers in peachland The prospect of getting through April will provide a sobering thought however said Garriss 'Growers tell rue that they've always had their worst damage in April At that time the shuck has left the baby fruit leaving it flaked to the cold And the peach can stand less cold then than at any time" Peach growing said Lee is a hazardous industry The growers 'who are in the business have to be optimists or they wouldn't be In IL So they're generally having little to say They're watching carefully and waiting" The luscious fruit in 1960 poured almost $4 million into the hands of North Carolina growers with the amount exceeding $5 million in the Palmetto State So consumers businessmen and other besides agricultural officials are joining growers in watching weather developments ACMI Will Hear Hodges
