their Ilenryi parent in form (though that varies) but they are described as being taller with stiff sterns and large flowers The flowers were not large and the stems were neither tall nor stiff but I did not mind that and I like the delicate tints of yellow and orange especially one that is the color of strong lemonade Besides they are long in blooms The first flower opened the second day of July just before Henryi and they lasted until the end of the month MRS LEE CORRELL says that she has good success with lilies in Maxton She plants them in part shade mulches With Fountain In The reds and yellows of zinnias and marigolds to make hot July look hotter Even the petunias have a jaded leggy look and must be sheared to bring them back to their spring-like beauty THE BEST PLANT I know which never blinks an eye no matter how hot or dry it is in July and August is periwinkle A border of white periwinkle back of a border of blue and white petunias makes a cool and restful picture and should be grown more widely just because it never loses its shiny splendor We can still sow seeds and get a minimum of blooms before frost Snow-on-the-mountain a dusty miller should be used in the back of a border for coolness and beauty also Clusters here and there add delightful accents to a long border End keep it from looking jaded when days become hot and dry IN MI- OWN GARDEN my greatest delight has been two lilies the Gold Band lilies of Japan I remembered them in my mother's garden and was delighted when I saw these bulbs on a flower counter in one of our department stores last fall I planted them In late No vember and they began blooming in mid-July and bloomed over a five-week period Two to three huge white blooms with gold bands down each petal opened each day and lasted a week on the stalk or in the house when cut They were gorgeous and very fragrant ELIZABETH WAY Looks Up them heavily with manure in the fall and in summer gives them a sprinkling of a commercial fertilizer that contains extra potash She says that Golden Clarion is as easily grown as the olympic hybrids She was delighted with the Australian lily Milan Wal lace This is another bat bloomed poorly for me but (observer I Hunt Garden Blooms were open wide and slightly curved ten to each stalk Gardeners have found that dwarf crape myrtle will make long lasttng beauty spots in the summer border It grows to as much as three feet tall and bears many fine clusters of blooms The blue and white are especially beautiful in summer since so many other flowers run to reds and yellows The blue one is called "Blue Midget" It is a very striking little shrub but not quite what I like to call me it looks more like lavender-pink but I believe if we would use some acid fertilizer when they first come into bloom they would develop more blue color We might try three ounces of aluminum sulphate to a gallon of water and give them a drink daily for several weeks MRS WILLIAM HUNT 3212 Pinehurst Place (off Selwyn Ave) has discovered what color will do to a green garden They have an ideal inclosed back yard which slopes downward with steps under an arch of roses leading to the lower section where we found her color plot one of outstanding beauty Since there are many trees i in this garden with tall hedges of greenery all the say around there is so much shade that they almost despaired of having any color except for flowering shrubs and trees of early spring There just wasn't a place to plant perennials and annuals!
